Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Pyxis had never been more terrified in her life. She especially did not understand why she had even agreed to this in the first place. How had Dudley talked her into meeting his parents? They were driving all the way to London to see the flat Dudley was living in and to meet the girlfriend that Dudley had managed to make for himself. And because it was such a big deal, she'd spent her entire Friday night cleaning the flat and making it parent friendly.

She looked at herself in the dress. It wasn't even a typical dress she'd wear. It was a nice dress that Dudley had helped her pick out. She was waiting for them to arrive, brushing and fixing her hair for third time in a mirror in their sitting room, glancing at Walden. Why was he looking at her like that? And why did she have to wear heels? They hurt her feet. "What?" She frowned, then glanced at Dudley. "Why are you two staring at me?"

"A twin? How lovely," Petunia said, smiling at Pyxis. "Your mother must have been so happy to get two children for the price of one. I've always said the world could use another boy like Dudley, but one child was quite enough for us. Our Duders was such a sweet angel of a boy when he was born. You should have seen him, all rosy cheeked and angelic."

Dudley wanted to kill both his parents. He cleared his throat. "Won't you come sit down?" he asked, gesturing towards the couch. "Since Walden's going to be bringing in tea any minute now. We should all sit down and relax for a bit, don't you think? Pyxis has been working hard all day. She's a vegan, but she made us a nice chicken dinner."

"Oh, you don't eat meat, dear?" Petunia looked Pyxis over. She didn't understand kids these days, refusing to do something like eat meat. "I suppose you already know Walden's like that too. He won't touch the stuff. Did you have a lot of animals growing up? I've always thought it grew out of being around so many cats."

"No. I never had a pet until recently. I've got a cat named Loras." Pyxis admitted as she walked into the room where Dudley was leading them, then sat on the loveseat beside Dudley. "I did a lot of research when I was thirteen on the benefits of being a vegan. And my family has a history of heart disease and cancer. Not eating meat reduces the chances of contracting those diseases."

Vernon sat on the couch, which was a bit lumpy, but it was fine. "She's a smart girl too, Dudley. Does she have a flaw we don't know about?"

Pyxis laughed softly. "I'm sure we all have our flaws, Mister- Er... Vernon."

"Nah," Dudley said, grinning at Pyxis. "I haven't seen a flaw yet. I think you're the exception to the rule, Pyxis." He reached out and took her hand as they sat on the love seat. He just wanted to make sure his parents liked her. His mother would run Pyxis out of his life, somehow, if she didn't.

Petunia fluffed the cushion on the couch a little bit before she sat down. She'd always thought that Dudley would end up with a girl who was a bit... slimmer, but this was all right too. Pyxis was an heiress and she seemed pleasant enough. Pentunia would just have to wait and see how well the girl cooked. She couldn't have her Duders starving to death. "You've made a good effort making the flat feel homey," she said, looking around. "It's a bit bare, but I suppose you're all only students."

"Pyxis also has to deal with me and Dudley being her roommates," Walden pointed out, coming into the room with a tray of cups and tea. "You should see her room at home. It's beautiful. She's got all these pillows and blankets in this sitting area for her friends and the walls are lined with books."

"It's not my home anymore. This is my home." Pyxis reminded Walden as she leaned forward and put some sugar into her tea. She sipped at it and looked around the room. "Well. Not right now. The house will probably be mine when I'm older or, God forbid, my father dies."

Vernon hummed softly at that, reaching over his large belly to grab the tea Walden had brought them. He brought it to his lips and took a sip. "Your brother won't take over?"

Pyxis shook her head. "My brother isn't as reliable as me. I don't want to take over, at all, but I've still got a long time to wait before any of that happens. I'll be an agent and hopefully live the life I choose until I have to live the life I'm handed."

"You shouldn't have to do anything you don't want to do," Walden said, frowning as he took a seat on a bean bag, looking up at Pyxis. "You've got cousins, right? You've got Thoreau and Romy. I mean, I don't think Romy is very business minded, but what about her brother? I haven't talked to him much."

Was Walden trying to talk Pyxis out of Dudley's fortune? Petunia usually thought he was a sweet boy, but this time she didn't approve. "I think it's very good of Pyxis to respect her family's wishes," she said firmly, shaking her head. "It's important to have respect for where you come from, Walden. I would have thought your mother and grandmother taught you that. Betty's very respectable."

"Walden is just trying to look out for me. That's all." Pyxis told Petunia, shrugging. "I know it's my responsibility. But, I also know that my father has a heart of iron. He's solid. He'll be alive for a bit."

She stood up. "Walden. Will you help me with the chicken?" She asked, excusing herself and walking into the kitchen.

Walden nodded, getting to his feet and leaving Dudley to his parents. "Sorry about them," he said, lowering his voice and squeezing Pyxis's shoulder. "Dudley doesn't think like them, if you're worried. He likes you for you, not your family's money."

Dudley gave his parents a slightly embarrassed look. "Could you please stop talking about her family and her money?" he asked, lowering his voice. "I really like her. She's a really nice girl."

Pyxis looked up at Walden, her lip wobbling slightly. She bit down on it to make it stop, but then buried her face in his chest to breathe him in deep. There was something calming about him. "That's all they care about. They're not going to like me for me. And his mother keeps looking me over and I start feeling bothered by the weight I've gained recently."

"We're not talking about it that much." Vernon frowned at his son, shaking his head. "We're learning about her family. A family is important. What if you marry her? You'll be part of her family."

Walden wrapped his arms around Pyxis and held her close to his chest, shaking his head. "Hey, don't," he said, kissing the top of Pyxis's head. "Believe me, Pyxis, they're not worth your tears. You're amazing and if they don't see that tonight, it's not them, not you." He pulled back, looking down at her. "You look stunning. Dudley and I both had trouble not staring, remember?"

"Dad, we just started dating," Dudley pointed out. "And Pyxis wants to know about my family too. Can we talk about you two a little when she comes back? I can tell she's getting a bit uncomfortable, all right?"

"Dudley is just into my body because I'm the only girl who has ever gotten naked for him." Pyxis pointed out, closing her eyes. She leaned into Walden. "And I haven't figure out what is wrong with you yet."

Vernon frowned at his son, then looked at Petunia. "I think Dudley is embarrassed of us. After all we've done for him."

"Pyxis, come on. There's nothing wrong with me or you and Dudley's into your body because you're beautiful." Walden tilted her chin up, brushing their lips together gently. "If you weren't this beautiful, it would be a lot easier for me to do what I promised to do and be just your friend," he whispered.

"I'm not embarrassed!" Dudley protested, shaking his head. He could see his mother going cold. "I'm not. I just... want her to get to know you and she's not comfortable. That's why she left."

"Well, maybe her parents should have bought her some manners with that money," Petunia said, sniffing disdainfully. "Dudley, really. We're not doing anything wrong."

Pyxis let out a soft breath against Walden's lips and looked up at him, sliding a hand up his chest. She kissed him again, then pulled back and shook her head. "We can't." She told him quietly, then pulled the chicken from the oven. "Is this how it's supposed to look?"

Vernon sighed softly. "We could stop talking to her all together, if that's what you want."

Walden looked down at the kitchen, rubbing the back of his neck. He wasn't completely sure. "I think so," he said. "Stick a thermometer in it to see if it's done. That's what my mum does when she cooks meat for her and my gran."

"No, Dad, that's not what I want," Dudley said, shaking his head. "I just want... to ease her into everything, okay? There's going to be plenty of time for you to ask questions about her family and their money. We're going to be together for a while."

"We don't have one." Pyxis looked up at Walden and sighed softly. "It looks fine. It looks a little dry, but I'm sure it's fine." She told him, then put it onto a plate, wrinkling her nose. It was like looking at a dead chicken, which was what it was, but... did it have to look so realistic? She took a deep breath and started to take out the pieces she'd made for herself and Walden, putting everything on the table.

After a moment, she took a deep breath and glanced at Walden before joining everyone else. "Sorry about that. The chicken is done and everything is ready. Walden made brownies for desert."
