Merlin had found a job working in a fast food joint. And while it wasn't the most glamourous of jobs, it was helping him pay the rent. He'd been working there nearly a week and everything he owned, including his hair, all smelled like a giant french fry. And his hands had mustard stains. All he really wanted to do was go home and take a bath and sleep. Maybe wank.

He walked into his flat and took off the dumb hat they made him wear, tossing it aside, then saw Draco standing in his kitchen. It was Friday night, wasn't it? "Hey."

Draco wasn't being very understanding. Merlin looked back at him for a moment and sighed heavily. "It's just that... you always make fun of everything I do. I got kicked out of my house, Draco. I think that's enough humiliation I can handle."

He sighed softly and sat down at the table where Draco had set on the table. "I just want you to appreciate the things I do, rather than the things you do for me."

"I don't make fun of everything you do. I just made fun of the uniform," Draco said, watching Merlin sit at the table. He hated Tom Riddle. If he wasn't such a homophobic prick, things would have been so much better. Merlin wouldn't look at him like he was tired of him already half the time and they wouldn't already be bickering. They could have enjoyed the honeymoon period when two people first start dating.

"I appreciate you," he promised, carrying the pasta and bread over to the table and setting them down in front of Merlin. "That's why I made dinner. To show you I'm not useless and I'm willing to do things to help out."

"I don't think you're useless, Draco. I just think that... I don't know." Merlin looked down at his plate. "I think that you're way more spoiled than I ever was and it's made it where you're unable to really see where I'm coming from."

Merlin ran a hand through his hair. "Not everyone has it great as a homosexual. Not everyone has gay parents. Not everyone has a lot of money."

"I know that," Draco said, sighing. "I've seen all the videos and read news stories and everything. Just... My parents all love you and I love you. The only thing I really don't understand is why you won't take money from us."

He shook his head. "But I know that you don't want to and I accept that you don't want to and I'm not going to try and make you. I promise. I'm trying to understand where you're coming from. It's just difficult for me."

"I'm already going to owe your parents a lot of money when I get back on my feet. Taking more and more money from them isn't something I can do. Lavishing myself in my own parents money was never an option for me. Let alone freeloading off yours."

"I don't want to look back and think about how I never made anything out of myself. That I had to have people help me make something out of myself." Merlin looked at Draco. "The only other job offer I got was as a call boy. You should be happy I chose the chip cook."

Draco wanted to ask why Merlin had even gone somewhere where he'd be offered that kind of job. "You're not a whore," he said, shaking his head. "And we're together. You're not the cheating kind."

He ran his fingers through his hair again, then served Merlin some pasta before helping himself. "You want to be independent. Okay. I won't say anything else about your job."

But, he was the cheating kind. He'd spent an entire week with Draco's father, but Draco could never find out about it. He sighed softly and looked Draco over, touching his hand. Why did things have to be so complicated?

"It wouldn't be cheating if you knew about it. I don't make a habit of hiding things." Merlin admitted, looking Draco over. "Pays about three times as much as cleaning bathrooms and dipping chips. But, you're right. I couldn't do that."

"I don't share," Draco said, shaking his head. "I don't... I know it's not like you'd be in love with them or even like them. You'd be doing it for the money. But I could never be okay with that."

He turned his hand under Merlin's linking their fingers together. "So... how was work?"

Merlin sighed softly. "I know that you wouldn't be okay with it. That's why I didn't take the job. That's why I took this other job. I'd never do anything to hurt you on purpose, Draco. You must know that."

He ran a hand through his hair, squeezing Draco's hand. "It was stressful. They want to put me on register because I'm good with people. But, you know me. I don't like people."

"I know," Draco said, nodding. "You made the right choice. I won't say anything about your job." Even if he didn't think Merlin having to choose between being a fry cook and a call boy was very fair. He was better than that.

"You are good with them though, even if you don't like them. You should try it," Draco said, smiling at Merlin. "If you want to put you out front they must have faith in your abilities."

"It's more like no one else wants to do it. And I'm the new hire, so they think they can force me to do it." Merlin pointed out, kissing Draco softly and then pulling off a piece of garlic bread. He popped it into his mouth, then took a bite of spaghetti.

"One day, I'll have a different job. I'll be in University." Merlin told him. "And then, I'll be able to make all our dreams come true."

Draco watched Merlin eat a bit of the bread and try the pasta, then picked up his own fork. It couldn't be that bad, right? "I think I'd rather take people's orders than make the food," he said. "I'm not very good at cooking."

He tried some of the pasta. It wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't as good as the food their cook at home made. "I'll be at university with you, after a year," Draco said. "We'll be able to live together full time if we want to." It did sound nice, although it also made him miss Pansy and the way he and Pansy had talked about being roommates for university when they were little. She'd probably want to live with her boyfriend even if she didn't hate him.

Merlin nodded at that and pet at Draco. "I know. I want you to be at University with me. And I'll find us a flat after my first year and it'll be perfect. By then, I'll be all sorted out and I won't be as grumpy."

He touched Draco's hand and leaned in, kissing him softly. "I do love you. Even if we fight all the time."

"We didn't used to fight all the time," Draco pointed out, sighing. "But then I made you come out and now there's so much stress all the time that we bicker about everything. I'm sorry. It's my fault for pushing you."

He kissed Merlin back. "I love you too. I'm looking forward to it. When everything is better and we can just be happy without worrying about everything so much. Is the garlic bread any better than the pasta?"

"It's not your fault. I love you. I should have come out sooner." Merlin told Draco, shaking his head. He leaned in and brushed their lips together, then ate more of his pasta. "It's my fault my parents are split up right now."

"The pasta is better than the garlic bread." Merlin told him. "You should let the pasta cook longer. And garlic bread is easy. There's a garlic paste you can buy, mix it with a little butter and then spread it over a nice slice of baguette."
