Dudley had never been to New York before, but he and Romy were going to America to visit Rex and Rider and their baby. Romy had been wanting to do it for ages and Dudley had saved up the money and surprised her with plane tickets for her birthday, so now they were doing Christmas in New York City. There was a baby and gay porn stars involved, but it was still going to be the most romantic trip ever. Dudley was counting on it.

He was all bundled up in his winter coat and scarf as he and Romy rode the lift up to the top of the Empire State Building. "Are you going to be warm enough at the top?" he asked, looking down at his girlfriend who he was about to try and make his fiance. "I could give you my scarf."

Walden could feel Pyxis's need in the kiss. Feel the way she wanted him in the way her lips moved against his and her body pressed close to him. He didn't want to let her go. He didn't know how anyone could ever stop kissing someone who touched them the way Pyxis was touching him now.

He picked Pyxis up in his arms, pressing her against the wall of the hotel room and just kissing her, long and slow and sweet, not trying to get anything more from her than what she was already giving him. This was perfect. This was what he'd been missing, desperately, for four years.

Walden had dated other girls. Some of them had been really nice. Sweet girls from good families who he got along with really well. Girls he probably would have settled down with if he hadn't already had his heart set on one girl in particular. Nobody compared to Pyxis Weasley. Nobody could compete with her, as hard as they might try. She was Walden's one and only and he was okay with that. He'd always be okay with that. "Stay," he whispered. "Stay with me."

Pyxis wanted to stay. She wanted to stay so badly and yet, she couldn't. She was... Her whole life would change if she had to settle down with him. No more traveling and helping to better the world. She'd be stuck.

Her eyes met Walden's and she took a deep breath. "I... I can't, Walden. I still have to work and I still have to travel."

Walden didn't want Pyxis to tell him no, but part of him understood. If she'd asked him to go with her he couldn't have said yes either. They both had their own lives now. He closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against hers.

"I understand," he said. "It's asking too much to ask you to stay with me. I just... wish that you could." Walden kissed her again. "We have today," he said. "All of today. Let me put my shirt on and we can go to my place. You haven't seen it before. I have more cats."

Pyxis was quiet the whole car ride to Walden's, holding Loras in her arms as they listened to Billie Holiday croon on the radio. It was calming and everything that she wanted. It was perfect. She and Walden could ride home every night after work and just... listen to his music and be close and hold hands.

It was all she wanted. Why was she keeping herself away from him? Why was she purposely making herself miserable? Why? Because she was terrified of what all that meant. Of being close to him and riding home from work with him. Having children and living in a home with a white picket fence. Because honestly, wasn't that really what Walden wanted?

Sure, he wanted to travel and see the sights of the world. To experience culture, but he loved teaching. He wanted to live in London and be a teacher and work at a school and be settled down until the summer. The summer. That would be his only traveling season outside of Christmas and the Christmas holiday just wasn't enough. It wasn't even long enough.

Her stomach was wrenching with every thought that she had. It was all... It was just too much. There was no way that she was willing to take away his life just to live hers selfishly. Neither one of them should have to give up the life they wanted, but in particular, Walden. He deserved to be happy. He was perfect.

She picked at her nails nervously as they pulled up to his building. She ducked so she could look up from the windshield, then glanced at him, getting out of the car. She held onto Loras in her arms, who was purring like there was absolutely nothing wrong.

Stupid cat. So blissfully ignorant to everything wrong with the world.

Pyxis followed Walden up the stairs and then into his flat. She took a look around and put Loras on the ground, where he cowered a bit. Of course, now he understood the stress of the world, but only because of Walden's other cats that came rushing the door. "You still have a lot of cats." She said, her voice soft and warm. "That's comforting. You haven't changed much."

Walden was nervous about what Pyxis was going to think of his flat. He'd done his best with it, but he did have to live on a teacher's salary and he had five cats. It was hard to keep a place looking nice when you had five cats who liked to play and cuddle and sometimes fight. At least he didn't have carpet anymore so their shedding was a little less obvious.

Walden wanted Pyxis to like his place because the more she liked it, the more likely she was to want to come back to it. His flat wasn't as big or nice as the one they'd live in together, but it was a good size and he only had to duck when he went through the doors. The rest of the ceilings were high enough for him. Plus, his balcony had stairs down to the building's garden for them to go down.

"I'll always have lots of cats," Walden promised, smiling down at Pyxis. "I don't think I've changed much at all. I'm always going to be the same old Walden." He leaned down and picked Loras up as he led the way into his flat, his cats rubbing against his legs like they hadn't seen him in months. "I should make sure they have food and water and then I'll introduce you to all of them. Poor Loras. Sometimes little princes have to deal with thei subjects. They won't bite."

He scratched Loras under the chin, smiling when the cat gave in and started to purr for him. "You just need a bit of pampering to perk up, don't you?" Walden looked back at Pyxis. "You can sit, if you want. Do you want something to eat? I can make a tofu scramble or something."

Pyxis took a deep breath when Walden walked ahead of her, doing her best to calm herself down. This was okay. Everything was going to be okay. And he looked so happy playing with Loras, which was so annoying because all she wanted to do with him was grab him and hold onto him.

"Walden..." Pyxis looked around his house and smiled. "This is so gorgeous. I didn't know you had decorating in you. It's so... you."

"Romy helped with it," Walden admitted, looking around his flat and then giving Pyxis a happy smile. "But the cat pictures were my idea and I chose all the colours and stuff. She's just the only girl I'm really close to, you know? I think she thought of it as practice for her and Dudley's house."

He smiled at Pyxis, giving Loras a kiss and then putting him down so he could meet the other cats. "I think they're going to be really happy together."

"They've been together this long with no problems. I'm sure that they'll be fine." Pyxis shrugged as she looked up at Walden. "They managed to not break up even once, even through university."

Pyxis chewed her bottom lip, then looked at Walden and pressed close to him. "I never stopped." She told him quietly, hoping with all her being that he knew what she meant.
