Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Gabriel was seven and sometimes the Malfoys still overwhelmed him. He didn't worry that he'd do something wrong and be sent away for use in potions anymore, not unless Valentine's Uncle Tom was over, and he didn't feel as bad about being given presents by Narcissa when she took him and Valentine and Winter shopping, and he knew Valentine thought of him as a friend and not a pet, but sometimes the things the Malfoys did were just so big. Every year at Christmas, for example, they threw a huge party and they got a tree that filled up the foyer and took the house-elves days to decorate completely. They bought lavish presents for everyone as if spending thousands of galleons on gifts was a perfectly normal thing to do.

Gabriel's first Christmas with the Malfoys, he'd been surprised to get anything. After all, hadn't he been an early Christmas present for Valentine? But Narcissa always made sure he had presents and Gabriel had come to accept that she and Valentine saw him as part of their family now. Narcissa even took Gabriel out to buy special presents for Valentine.

There were floods of people at the manor during Christmas too. Valentine's brother came home, and so did Winter's father and his brother's friends. And then all the guests who came to the parties where Narcissa finally seemed happy, and Valentine's father always came around and surprised Gabriel by being much nicer than he expected someone who made Valentine's mother so sad to be. It was kind of nice, having everyone there. Valentine's grandfather, Abraxas, who was someone very important and seemed very young for a grandfather, was loud and kind and liked to pick him and Valentine up a lot. Draco played with them both and spent a lot of time with Narcissa too. Valentine's Uncle Evan and Lucius and his Uncle Sirius all spent much more time with Narcissa and when she was happy Valentine and Gabriel didn't sleep in her room as often.

There were also special Christmas songs to sing. Gabriel loved singing. He sang lullabies to Winter all the time to get her to go to sleep, but the Christmas songs were extra special because you were only allowed to sing them for a month and then you had to wait a whole year before they came out again. Lucius's birds got special treatment around Christmas too. Narcissa used spells to make their white feathers gleam with hints of gold and silver and they looked even more magnificent than usual, prancing around the grounds and gardens. Gabriel had a special bond with the birds. He always smuggled out breads to feed them around Christmas because it seemed like the right time of year to show them how much he liked them.

But Gabriel's favourite part of Christmas was the topper that went on the huge tree the Malfoys kept in their foyer. A beautiful angel, made of porcelain and glass, dressed in silk and glinting with gold leaf. She had blonde hair and big wings and Gabriel would sit on the landing at the top of the Malfoy's grand staircase, so he was about even with the top of the tree, and gave at it for hours, until Valentine or someone came and got him to do something, and then he'd sneak out and do it again. Gabriel only had vague memories of his mother, but in his mind he thought she looked like the angel. Elegant and lovely and perfect and winged, like an angel. This ethereal creature that was the only thing special enough to symbolize Christmas.

Every year Gabriel looked forward to the angel coming out again because it reminded him of her. He kept the thought to himself, though. It felt like a secret between him and the angel. Everyone else just thought he liked the tree, except for the elves, who knew he sometimes snuck out at night to sit and stare at her too. Usually they just brought him a glass of milk and some biscuits to keep him company.

Gabriel was eating a biscuit, gazing at the angel and wondering if he'd grow wings when he got older as he sat on the landing in the middle of the night, when he heard footsteps behind him and turned to see Valentine standing there. "You should be in bed," he pointed out. "Santa comes tonight."

Gabriel smiled and leaned against Valentine, tucking his head into the other boy's neck for a moment, then pulled back and kept walking towards Valentine's room. "I'm lucky. You're the best friend I ever could have got."

Abraxas was buzzed on eggnog, feeling generally pleased with the world as he sat in a sea of wrapping paper and opened boxes after giving a small fortune in gifts to his family members, his arm around Tom's shoulders. "Another good Christmas," he said, kissing Tom's neck. "I'll be disappointed when you head back to Hogwarts."

He looked up as Valentine and the Veela boy Lucius had brought him came wading through the wrapping paper, letting go of Tom to pick Valentine up, laughing. "Did you get everything you asked Santa for this year, Val?" he asked. "Your mummy told me you were a very good boy."

Valentine looked at his grandfather with a very serious expression. "Almost." He told him as he looked at Gabriel, then back at his grandfather. He pulled out the piece of parchment he'd scribbled all of his ideas onto and then cleared his throat.

"My best friend in the world is Gabriel. I love him." Valentine informed his grandfather very seriously, frowning at him. "And I never want to lose him. And I want him to be treated fairly. That is why I propose that when I attend Hogwarts, if he has any sort of magic ability, he should be allowed to attend Hogwarts with me."

Abraxas looked at the parchment Valentine held out to him and resisted the urge to laugh at how adorable it was to have one of his grandsons hand him a proposal from his lap on Christmas Day. "Well, let's see," he said, taking the paper from him and glancing at Gabriel, who looked equal parts nervous and embarrassed. Abraxas smiled as he read Valentine's list.

"It's a very good proposal," he said, looking at Valentine again. "But I think you've missed something, Valentine. I'm just the Minister of Magic. I'm not the Headmaster of Hogwarts. I think if you really want to see if Gabriel can be allowed to come with you to Hogwarts you'll have to see what Tom says about a boy who's only half-human attending his school." Abraxas held the proposal out to Tom. "What do you think? Valentine does allow that, obviously, if Gabriel doesn't have the magical ability to live up to your high standards, he shouldn't be allowed entrance to the school."

Tom was disgusted by the proposal. He looked the blond over and shook his head. "If he were magical, outside of the half breed that he is, he would have shown signs by no." Tom had no time for a children's game, even if it was Christmas and this was his somewhat grandson. He looked at the boy. "Surely you must understand."

Valentine looked at Gabriel and shook his head. "You're wrong. He is magical and you can't see it because you're a mean man who wants to take peoples rights away." He told him. "If you won't take him, I will go to a better school. One that will accept him. Beauxbatons or Durmstrang." He looked at Gabriel. "Show him that thing you can do."

Gabriel glanced between Tom and Valentine, feeling like maybe they should have stuck with the pet thing. He could be a pet at Hogwarts and maybe read Valentine's books secretly and help him with his homework. But Valentine was asking him to do something for him. "I -- I can do some things," he admitted. Gabriel cupped his hands together, concentrating for a moment before a little ball of blue flame appeared between them.

Abraxas raised an eyebrow at that, glancing at Tom for a moment and then looking down at Valentine. "Valentine, Tom's run his school for years and he always turns out very good witches and wizards. Not like Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. You're much too smart to waste yourself there. I know Gabriel is your best friend and France is more... lenient about breeding, but Tom has very good reasons for his rules. And you might be okay at Durmstrang, but a Veela wouldn't like it there very much."

Valentine looked at his grandfather and shook his head. "If Gabriel isn't good enough to attend the same school as me, then I don't belong there. I don't care if Tom runs the school. Maybe I don't want to be in a school where someone like him ruins other peoples lives."

He stood from his grandfather's lap. "Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal grandfather. I'm just thankful that you are a better minister than he is a headmaster."

Gabriel pushed his hand together to get rid of the flame, wondering if he should apologise to the older men and then deciding he'd probably get in trouble if he did. He reached out and took Valentine's hand. "It's okay," he said, pulling him away. "We've got a few years before you go to school. Maybe he'll change his mind. Or maybe you can take me as your pet. I won't mind."

Abraxas watched the boys walk away, and then glanced at Tom. "My grandson is going to end up going to France for school. Narcissa gives that boy anything he asks for. I'm surprised he's not spoiled completely rotten. The fire was impressive, for a seven-year-old."

Valentine shook his head. "I've always hated Tom. And he's always hated me. He's not going to give me anything I want. We'll have to wear my grandfather down on the issue. I will not go to school without you, Gabriel."

"He's not half muggle, Abraxas. He's half creature. He's part Veela." Tom informed Abraxas, shaking his head. "The only half-creatures that are acceptable for the world are the Macnairs and the Draganovs and that's only because of the strength. Veelas are nothing but foul rodents who make people fall in love with them. Your son was an idiot for bringing one of them in as a pet. The boy would have been better off with a dementor as a friend."

Gabriel nodded. He didn't want Valentine to leave him along for almost the whole year either. He'd make new friends who had wands and could do spells and get bored of him. "We can try," he agreed. "Narcissa might help. Or you could just take me as a pet. I really won't mind. I'll let you walk me around the lake on a leash if I have to."

"Tom, Veela may be pretty and enchanting half the time, but they're not exactly fairy princesses," Abraxas pointed out. "I haven't seen any signs of it in the boy, but male Veela are rarer. He could have some skills we might be able to use if we keep his handler, Valentine, on our side." He glanced at the two boys across the room, frowning to himself. "Lucius didn't consult me before he made the purchase or I would have suggested a cat instead. I just don't want to see my grandson educated at Beauxbatons. I suppose it'll have to be Durmstrang, if he refuses to give this up. The first time someone fiddles with his Veela, he might change his tune."

Valentine looked back at Gabriel for a moment, then pulled him into a tight hug, hand moving up and down his back. "If no one will take you, I won't be going to any school. We can move somewhere and live as muggles and we'll have each other."

Tom frowned at Abraxas and shook his head. "I can break Narcissa. It's not as if she's that important and she's already a mental case since her boyfriend left her. She's bringing down the family. We will force her to make Valentine go to Hogwarts and we'll find a way to get rid of the Veela."
