Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Gabriel was seven and sometimes the Malfoys still overwhelmed him. He didn't worry that he'd do something wrong and be sent away for use in potions anymore, not unless Valentine's Uncle Tom was over, and he didn't feel as bad about being given presents by Narcissa when she took him and Valentine and Winter shopping, and he knew Valentine thought of him as a friend and not a pet, but sometimes the things the Malfoys did were just so big. Every year at Christmas, for example, they threw a huge party and they got a tree that filled up the foyer and took the house-elves days to decorate completely. They bought lavish presents for everyone as if spending thousands of galleons on gifts was a perfectly normal thing to do.

Gabriel's first Christmas with the Malfoys, he'd been surprised to get anything. After all, hadn't he been an early Christmas present for Valentine? But Narcissa always made sure he had presents and Gabriel had come to accept that she and Valentine saw him as part of their family now. Narcissa even took Gabriel out to buy special presents for Valentine.

There were floods of people at the manor during Christmas too. Valentine's brother came home, and so did Winter's father and his brother's friends. And then all the guests who came to the parties where Narcissa finally seemed happy, and Valentine's father always came around and surprised Gabriel by being much nicer than he expected someone who made Valentine's mother so sad to be. It was kind of nice, having everyone there. Valentine's grandfather, Abraxas, who was someone very important and seemed very young for a grandfather, was loud and kind and liked to pick him and Valentine up a lot. Draco played with them both and spent a lot of time with Narcissa too. Valentine's Uncle Evan and Lucius and his Uncle Sirius all spent much more time with Narcissa and when she was happy Valentine and Gabriel didn't sleep in her room as often.

There were also special Christmas songs to sing. Gabriel loved singing. He sang lullabies to Winter all the time to get her to go to sleep, but the Christmas songs were extra special because you were only allowed to sing them for a month and then you had to wait a whole year before they came out again. Lucius's birds got special treatment around Christmas too. Narcissa used spells to make their white feathers gleam with hints of gold and silver and they looked even more magnificent than usual, prancing around the grounds and gardens. Gabriel had a special bond with the birds. He always smuggled out breads to feed them around Christmas because it seemed like the right time of year to show them how much he liked them.

But Gabriel's favourite part of Christmas was the topper that went on the huge tree the Malfoys kept in their foyer. A beautiful angel, made of porcelain and glass, dressed in silk and glinting with gold leaf. She had blonde hair and big wings and Gabriel would sit on the landing at the top of the Malfoy's grand staircase, so he was about even with the top of the tree, and gave at it for hours, until Valentine or someone came and got him to do something, and then he'd sneak out and do it again. Gabriel only had vague memories of his mother, but in his mind he thought she looked like the angel. Elegant and lovely and perfect and winged, like an angel. This ethereal creature that was the only thing special enough to symbolize Christmas.

Every year Gabriel looked forward to the angel coming out again because it reminded him of her. He kept the thought to himself, though. It felt like a secret between him and the angel. Everyone else just thought he liked the tree, except for the elves, who knew he sometimes snuck out at night to sit and stare at her too. Usually they just brought him a glass of milk and some biscuits to keep him company.

Gabriel was eating a biscuit, gazing at the angel and wondering if he'd grow wings when he got older as he sat on the landing in the middle of the night, when he heard footsteps behind him and turned to see Valentine standing there. "You should be in bed," he pointed out. "Santa comes tonight."

Tom watched as the fire burst into the fireplace, then looked at the boy. He nodded and then grabbed the vase from his desk and held it out to him. "Fill this vase with water and then levitate it to the fireplace and make it pour itself onto the fire."

He didn't want the boy to succeed, but he was doing fine.

This was much trickier. Gabriel took the vase from Tom, saying the spell to conjure water and watching it fill. He levitated the vase to the fireplace and then paused, trying to remember how to manipulate the vase while it was in the air. He had a feeling dropping the vase into the fire would be a failing offense.

Gabriel bit his bottom lip for a moment, then quickly let the spell go and said it again, so the vase tipped over onto the fire, but was caught by the magic before it could fall too far. He brought it out carefully, setting it back on Tom's desk and looking at him for more instruction.

Tom frowned. The boy had faltered a bit, but not enough for him to complain. He cleared his throat and looked down at Gabriel, giving a disapproving look. He didn't want to let a half-veela child into his school, even if his son had said he thought it would be a good idea.

"You think you're special, don't you?" He asked, his voice gruff. "Tricking my grandson into thinking you're perfect. Making him fall in love with you." He shook his head. "Show me something powerful. Something you can do that makes you so special."

Gabriel took a step back when Tom snapped at him, but tried to keep calm. He thought about how badly Valentine wanted this, then cast the spell that Merlin had taught him, smiling with the little bird came out of his wind and flew around the office before perching on Tom's desk.

He looked up at Tom again. "I don't think I'm special, Sir," Gabriel said. "I just want to be able to be with my friend. I'll practice hard. I'm eleven, Sir. Veela don't have any powers of attraction until puberty."

A patronus. Tom watched the bird fluttering around and frowned. "Are you being smart with me?" He asked as he grabbed the boy by his long blond hair and pushed him down to his knees. Tom was a kind man to his own family, but this boy was nothing to him.

He cast Crucio and glared down at the boy. "I will let you into my school so that I don't upset Valentine. But, the moment you do anything I don't like, I will kill you."

Gabriel screamed when Tom cast the spell, wrapping his arms around himself and trying to twist away from the grip Tom had on his hair. "N-not being smart," he promised. "Please. Sir."

At least Val would be happy. Gabriel would just have to keep his head down so he didn't wind of dead. Valentine would blame himself for it, no matter what actually happened. It was how he worked. "Please. I'll be good."

Valentine was beaming as he looked down at his Hogwarts robes and looked over Gabriel in his. "We're both going to get into the same house together. And it's going to be great." He promise his best friend, holding his hand as they sat on the train together. "Everything is going to be perfect."

"Of course," Gabriel said, smiling at Valentine. He hadn't told him about the torturing part of the test. Just that he'd passed an he was allowed to go, sort of on probation because he was half-creature, according to England's laws. "I'm really glad you and Merlin gave me those lessons. I never would have made it through Tom's tests without them. Headmaster Riddle's, I mean."

He looked down at their hands, wondering if that was something he'd get in trouble for doing. Tom thought he was using Veela wiles on Valentine. Gabriel wasn't even sure he'd have Veela wiles. "What house are we going to be in?"

"My mum wants me to get into Slytherin." Valentine admitted with a sigh, shaking his head. "But, I'm not into that sort of thing. I'd much rather be in Gryffindor. People in Gryffindor are supposed to be nice. And brave. I think I'm brave."

He smiled at him. "And I know that you are brave."
