Mason was lucky to even be in Hogwarts. As a half-blood, he'd had to take numerous tests to prove how worthy he was of being a student. And at eleven years old, he'd really wanted to go to school and learn magic like his father did. So he'd proved to the committee that he was capable of doing every task they put before him, and he'd studied really hard.

However, Mason wasn't eleven anymore. He as seventeen and ready to leave Hogwarts. He sighed softly to himself and ran a hand through his hair before the Great Hall doors opened and a blonde girl in a blue Beauxbaton's uniformed walked in. She was beautiful, with her blonde hair and dark eyeliner. He'd never seen anyone like her before.

Had she just said something to him? A pretty girl had actually spoken to him? That almost never happened. He chewed the food that was in his mouth, kind of staring at her like an idiot for a moment, then swallowed.

Mason cleared his throat. "Oh." He nodded, then looked down at his food. "I'm Mason. What house are you going to be in?"

Lucy wasn't sure the boy was going to respond, at first. He just... stared at her. Maybe she should have worried about things other than England being ruled by a shadow dictator who was Headmaster of her new school. Maybe she should have been thinking about how weird English boys were.

"Lucy," she said. "I'm in Hufflepuff. That's this table, right? The yellow one?" She glanced around the hall. "I was told our uniforms were yellow."

"Yeah. We're yellow. And badgers." Mason nodded and ran a hand through his greasy hair. "Sorry. I just... that uniform is really clingy and thin. I don't know how you wear something like that."

He pulled off his blazer and held it out to her. "There. People won't stare at you as oddly."

Lucy looked down at her uniform and then up at Mason again, raising an eyebrow at him. "You don't have to stare at it, you know," she told him. "It's silk. It's comfortable."

Him offering the blazer was nice though. Lucy took it and pulled it on, pushing the sleeves up so they didn't cover her hands. "Thanks. This is definitely better than the looks I've been getting from everyone."

Mason laughed softly at that and smiled at he. "Well. I'm glad to have helped. You should eat something, because it's difficult enough to get food after lights out here. There are dementors as hall monitors."

He glanced down at his food and took another bite. "What year are you? I'm in seventh."

"Dementors? Fuck. I kind of thought that that was a myth," Lucy said, reaching for some more food to put on her plate. "I wish it was a myth. That's scary."

She ate some more of her food and then looked at Mason. "Sixth," she said. "We moved away for a little while and then my mother wanted to come back. I had to do all sorts of tests. I'm good at potions. I think that helped."

"It's not so bad. It keeps people from sneaking out too much after hours." Mason told her with a small shrug. "And I have it worse as a half-blood around here."

He poked at his chips and then laughed. "We all have to take tests around here. Headmaster Riddle is a tyrant."

"Tests make sense, but they were so intense. If tests are like that every time you take them, I might transfer back to Beauxbatons. Tests may be hard and in French, but at least they don't glare at you while you work," Lucy said, shaking her head.

She popped a chip into her mouth. "Will you show me to the common room after dinner? I remember where it is, but I think I've forgotten the knock already."

"Most of the actual professors here won't glare at you. Except maybe my father." Mason admitted as he looked her over and then laughed. "Then again, you're a pretty girl. So he may cut you some slack."

"Yeah. Of course." Mason nodded, then knocked back a bit of pumpkin juice. "They change the knock every two weeks. It's ridiculous."

"Well, you have to stop people from getting into your rooms somehow, right? At Beauxbatons we just had keys to lock the door with," Lucy said. "But we were two or three a room at most. No house system."

She took a sip of the juice and then looked around at the food on the table in front of them. "This is all way better than the stuff they serve at Beauxbatons, though. Nothing is fried. But it is warmer. Hogwarts is freezing."

"There are about seven beds to a year." Mason admitted as he thought about it. "Depends on how many people get sorted into what house. There's always more Gryffindors and Slytherins, though. We 'puffs are a rare breed."

Mason laughed at that. "Warmer? I don't think it's too cold around here."

Lucy glanced at the professors at the head table and then looked at Mason. "My mother said it was best if you got sorted into Slytherin," she said. "And that Hufflepuff and Gryffindor were worse off. I don't think I care."

She shook her head, pulling his blazer a little closer. "I'm used to the south of France. And I'm wearing silk. Like you said, it's pretty flimsy and thin."

"Yes. It's easier to be in Slytherin." Mason nodded his agreement and sighed about it. His father had been so disappointed about him being a Hufflepuff. "My dad is the head of Slytherin. And the Potion's Master."

He ran a hand through his hair again, something he did when he was nervous. "You'll get your warmer clothes tomorrow. There's just a bit of snow outside now. Scotland gets really cold sometimes."

"That must be good for you though, right? Your dad being a Slytherin? I was under the impression that they cared a lot about pedigree here. My mum made it seem like that did, anyway," Lucy said, looking around. "She's worried about me."

She ate another chip and nodded. "I can't wait to get a sweater and some of those knee-socks. The whole thing seems a bit sexy schoolgirl, though. Maybe I'm just used to being stuffed into blue silk."

"My dad being a Slytherin is good for him. Me being a Hufflepuff is bad for him." Mason pointed out and shook his head. "That's just kind of the way that it works. It's okay if you're a Ravenclaw."

Mason laughed at that. "You're the only person I've ever heard that's excited about getting the uniform. What made you transfer?"

"My mum," Lucy said, shrugging. "She decided she wanted to come back to England, all of the sudden, and it made sense that if we were going to be here I should go to Hogwarts and not Beauxbatons. Especially since I don't think you can be a witch in England and go to a school in another country. I'm not totally clear on the rules."

She looked up at Mason, pushing hair behind her ear. "What do people do for fun here?"

"That's because of the difference in standards. I'm surprised you managed to get in after all the tests. I assume you're not a pureblood, since you had to take all of them." Mason looked her over carefully and then grabbed a napkin, tucking some food into it and closing it up. He held the pouch out to her.

"Take this. The first night is the worst when you're hungry." Mason told her, then stood. "I'll show you to your room now."

Lucy took the pouch of food and smiled at Mason. "Thanks," she said. "I don't know what I am. I've never met my father. I'm probably a half-blood, though." She shrugged. "My mother's a pure-blood and she left the country when she got pregnant. She doesn't like to talk about it."

She stuffed another chip into her mouth and then stood too, glancing around the Great Hall. "So far Hogwarts isn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I guess I haven't had a class yet."

"My mother died ages ago. But, I know she was muggle." Mason admitted as he looked back at Lucy. "Maybe you're a pureblood. But, I guess you can't trace your lineage enough to Headmaster Riddle's expectations, yeah?"

"You'll be fine. I won't be in your classes, but I'm sure that you'll do fine." Mason told her with a shrug. "There are a few 'puffs here that you can make friends with. We have a secret muggle music society."

"You -- seriously?" Lucy raised her eyebrows at that. "I didn't think anyone would be able to get music around here. I haven't heard any English rock music I like in a long time. Not from the wizarding side of it, anyway."

She moved a bit closer to Mason. "It's not like this in France. You can listen to whatever you want. I'm a singer."

Mason glanced at her and arched a brow. "I'd love to go to a school where I could listen to anything I want. Rider listens to a lot of this grungy rock, and I really like that. But, I also like classic rock and some old American music."

He smiled at her. "You're a singer?" He asked. "When are you going to sing for me?"

"Who's Rider?" Lucy asked. "Is he a Hufflepuff too? Will I get to meet him?" She smiled at Mason. This was turning out a lot better than she'd thought it would. Talking to the boy with grungy looking hair had been a good idea.

"I like grunge too, and rock. I cried for days when Kurt Cobain died." Lucy looked up at Mason as she pulled his blazer a little closer. "Maybe I'll sing in one of the secret muggle music meetings you're going to invite me to."

"Rider is a friend I have in Slytherin. He's definitely not a Hufflepuff. And he's usually only nice to his girlfriend." Mason pointed out and looked Lucy over. "Be careful with him. I'm not entirely sure he wouldn't try to sleep with you. Girlfriend or not."

Mason led her to the common room, knocking on the barrels easily enough. "Rider may be in our common room. I'm not sure."
