Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Draco Malfoy was tired and scared and on the verge of another nervous break down. He pressed his face against the cool wood of the cabinet he was trying to fix and took a deep breath. He would steady himself. He would make this work. He would stop the Dark Lord from killing his mother and father and then him. And he would do it all without letting Snape swoop in and claim all the glory, like his Aunt Bellatrix had warned he'd try to do. Draco liked Snape, but this was war and his parent's lives were in his hands.

He pushed himself back from the cabinet and opened it again, looking into the musty wooden interior. "Why won't you work?" he asked. His voice was muffled by the towers of forgotten things around him. Books and nick nacks, old junk stuffed into a ever-expanding room that hid away the garbage of hundreds of Hogwarts students and staff. Draco had spent four months in the room trying to make the cabinet work now, and nothing he did worked. He had been given instructions on how to get it running again, how to make it transport people from one place to another, but they hadn't worked. After the first month, he'd tossed them aside and begun doing his own research and experiments.

It was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do. His grades were slipping. He'd quit the Quidditch team. Potter was bloody stalking him, and maybe breaking the git's nose had been a bad move, but he'd deserved it. Greg and Vince were going to start having gender identity crises if he didn't figure this out quickly so they could stop turning into girls for him.

Draco kicked the stupid fucking cabinet and tried another charm meant to fascilitate ease of transportation. Something deep within the wood of the cabinet clicked and hummed to life. Draco blinked at it, unable to believe what he was hearing, and then scrambled for his bag, pulling out the apple he'd brought along to keep his energy up.

He placed the apple in the cabinet and closed the door, holding his breath as he counted slowly to thirty and then opened it again.

There was no apple.

Draco laughed, wanting to hug the fucking cabinet. He felt dizzy with the joy of it. He'd made something work. For once, something had gone right. Draco closed the door again, and after another count of thirty yanked it open and reached down to pick the apple up. He shined it on his cloak, looking it over for any sign of a flaw, and then bit into it. In his relief, he sat in the empty space inside the fucking cabinet, careful to keep the door open, and closed his eyes as he savoured the tart flavour of the apple in his mouth.

Draco leaned back and then found himself suddenly, inexplicably, falling backwards. His eyes snapped open and he reached out to grab the edge of the cabinet, but there was nothing there, only darkness and the feeling of air rushing past him. He fell for a long time, wondering what he'd managed to fuck up this time, and then just as suddenly as the fall had started, it stopped, and Draco's back hit the door of a cabinet identical to the one he'd been trying to fix in the Room of Requirement and he tumbled out into the middle of a shop.

It took him a moment to recognize it as Borgin and Burke's. It was cleaner than he was used to and brighter somehow, although it was dark outside in Knockturn Alley, and instead of Borgin standing behind the shop counter, there was a very handsome young man not much older than Draco himself.

Draco blinked at the other boy, feeling a bit dazed, and then sat up and ran a hand through his ruffled blond hair, wishing he wasn't dressed in his rumpled Hogwarts uniform shirt and tie, with not even his robes or sweater on to give him some ounce of dignity after falling out of a cabinet. "Who are you?"

His best friends. Draco wanted to grab hold of Pansy and make her explain everything. He glanced at the boy beside him again and fought the urge to laugh hysterically. "I think I need to lie down."

He reached up to rub his temples. "Maybe I did hit my head. Maybe you should take me to the infirmary." Draco could take time out and figure things out there, right? Maybe send an owl home to make sure his mother was all right and see if his father was in jail or not.

"Do you want me to get your father?" Pansy asked as she looked back at Draco and reached out to feel his forehead. "I'm sure he's in the Great Hall having breakfast before classes. Merlin can get you to the infirmary." She gave him a worried look.

Merlin glanced at Draco and nodded. "I can take you to the infirmary. It's not a problem. Did you drink too much or something?"

His father? What was his father doing at Hogwarts? But Draco hadn't seen him since Potter had gotten him arrested. He nodded. "Yes. You should get him," he told Pansy, especially since he knew the boy's name now.

Draco looked at Merlin. "I don't know. Maybe," he said. Who named their kid after Merlin? Maybe he was a half-blood and one of his parents didn't know better, although Draco had a hard time picturing himself becoming best friends with a half-blood. "Remind me of things I should know. As a test."

Merlin watched Pansy walk away and then glanced at Draco. He arched a brow at him and snorted. "Are you serious? You want to take a test? That means that I have to ask you questions and I'm particularly lazy this morning."

He let out a dramatic sigh. "Let's see. Who is the Minister of Magic?" He asked. "This one is easy."

Draco hesitated. He had a feeling that Merlin saying it was easy meant he was screwed. He started walking towards the exit to the common room. He could fake a head injury, right?

"Rufus Scrimgeour?" he guessed, knowing it had to be wrong even as he said it. "Maybe Cornelius Fudge? Or..." Draco sighed. "Fuck. I've got no idea."

Merlin stared at Draco for a moment, wondering if he was taking a piss. "Are you taking a piss, Draco? You're starting to worry me. I'm starting to think we should skip the infirmary and take you to my father."

He shook his head. "Your gradfather is the Minister. How can you not remember that?" He held Draco's hand. "What happened?"

His grandfather? Draco blinked at Merlin for a moment. "That... Fuck." He ran a hand through his hair. If he'd just messed up something like his grandfather being alive and Minister, asking Merlin who his father was couldn't make things too much worse, right?

"Who is your father?" he asked, giving Merlin a slightly concerned look. "I'm not sure I can even begin to explain what's going on."

This was getting a little too weird. He knew that Draco was a bit dramatic at times, but pulling something like this? That was beyond even Draco's fucked up ways. He ran a hand through his hair.

"My father is Headmaster Riddle." Merlin reminded him, stopping and placing a hand on his shoulder. "Tom Riddle? Also, Cornelius Fudge had been dead for four years."

"Headmaster..." Draco trailed off, staring at Merlin. "We should go see your father," he said, even if a large part of him was screaming at him to stay away. Tom Riddle would have to remember him, right? He was the reason everything was different.

"Right away. He'll know what's going on." He looked at Merlin for a moment, then shook his head. "I was going to try and explain it, but I don't think I can."

Merlin really didn't understand what was going on with Draco, but he nodded. He gave him a concerned look as he led him to the spiral staircase that went up to his father's office. He spoke the password to the two large snake statues there, then glanced at Draco.

"He'll be expecting you." Merlin leaned against the wall. "I'll wait for you here. And then I'll walk you to class."

"Thanks," Draco said, feeling a bit distracted. He gave the snakes guarding the door a cautious look, then stepped onto the moving staircase, walking up to the Headmaster's office. It was weird, thinking of the Dark Lord -- Tom Riddle -- as the Headmaster. Why wasn't he Minister?

He knocked on the half-open door to the office, then stepped inside. "You really did change things."

Tom was sitting in his desk, waiting for the boy to arrive. It had been many, many years since he'd first talked to Draco. And when the young boy had been born, he'd waited for the day when he would come back and remember their visit. When he'd remembered how far he'd come in the box.

A smile spread across his lips. "I see the day has come." He told him and stood, nodding. He raised his hands. "You have helped with all of this, Draco."

"Did you save my grandfather when he got Dragon Pox?" Draco asked, looking around the office. It looked very different from the office he was used to. "Everything's changed. Pansy and... and your son are worried about me. I don't remember anything about this world."

He looked at Tom Riddle. "I'm not sure how to explain that I travelled back in time and changed everything to them."

Tom looked Draco over carefully and shook his head. "It'll just take time to remember the things that went on. That's all." He told him and then moved towards a cabinet where he kept a pensieve. "I've had the ability to ask you to retain some of your memories through out the years. I told you it was mandatory."

He lifted one of the vials. "I don't think you should tell my son or Pansy about going back in time." He paused. "And yes. I saved your grandfather. He's my friend."

Draco looked at the pensieve and then at the vial in Tom's hand and nodded. He wished his old self hadn't just fallen in line with Riddle's command, but having the memories was going to be useful. "Thank you," he said. "For thinking of everything."

He moved closer to the pensieve. "This world seems... better than the one I left." So far. His father wasn't in jail, at least. "Is my mother all right?"

"Your mother is fantastic, Draco. I've taken very good care of your family." Tom nodded and looked Draco over carefully. "She's living in the Manor while your father is here teaching. And she's taking care of your younger brother whom can't come to Hogwarts yet."

He motioned towards the pensieve. "Go ahead. Your first memory should be about the time you're four years old and you've met your friend Pansy."

His... younger brother? Draco stared at the Dark Lord for a moment, feeling incredulous, but his mother had always wanted more kids. Hopefully the memories would explain everything to him. He gave Tom a careful look, then lowered his head into the pensieve.

The silvery memories swirled around him for a moment, and then everything solidified and he was watching a young version of himself approach four-year-old Pansy.

"I know you're just a girl," he said, "but if you want to you can be my friend. I won't mind too much."

The tiny Pansy looked up from playing with the lace of her dress and smiled at Draco. She reached out her pudgy hand and smiled at him. "I'm Pansy Parkinson." She told him, then looked up at her mother as she was scolded for not doing a curtsy instead of shaking his head. She straightened her tiny body and did a curtsy.
