Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Pansy hadn't been able to stop thinking about how everyone around her seemed to be having sex. And her own boyfiend didn't want to touch her like that. He wanted to respect her and while that was noble, it was kind of annoying for her. She was sixteen years old. She thought it was time to lose it already.

But, since there was nothing she could do about it, Pansy was taking a walk to clear her mind. She was walking along the edge of the Forbidden Forest when her heel got caught in one of the pumpkin patch vines, sending her falling down onto her knees hard. She swore, grabbing onto her knee that was now scraped, trying not to cry about it.

Neville Longbottom was a quiet kid. He'd been awkward a chubby most of his life. That, plus being sorted into Gryffindor and having parents who were known traitors, made him pretty good at keeping his head down. It was a good survival tactic at Hogwarts, where the Slytherins owned the school. He got along with Professor Rosier though, and Professor Weasley, so he spent a lot of time in the greenhouses and outdoors, taking care of the plants. He was going to be an excellent herbologist some day.

He was just picking some of the riper pumpkins to bring to the elves to make pasties with when he heard a crash and then someone swearing. A girl. Neville put his pumpkin down and walked over to where the sound had come from. People didn't usually come this close to the forest.

Pansy Parkinson was the last person he was expecting to see, but he remembered how nice she'd been to him before they'd been sorted into opposite houses, and she looked close to tears. He was a Gryffindor. Retreating to a safe distance in the forest to wait for her to leave wasn't really an option. "You all right?" Neville asked, pulling off his gloves and kneeling beside Pansy in the pumpkin patch.

Neville Longbottom. Pansy's stomach did a small, stupid flutter of butterflies before she looked down at her knee. Her cheeks turned a shade of pink and she wiped at her eyes quickly so that he couldn't see her tears. She didn't want to be a stupid, weak girl in front of him.

"I'm okay." Pansy said, trying to ignore the bleeding. "The vines were a little longer than I thought they'd be. I'm not a stupid girl or anything like that."

Neville gave Pansy an odd look as he pulled out his wand. "I didn't think you were," he said. "You scraped up your knee pretty badly." He cleaned the leg up and then healed her wound and got to his feet, offering Pansy his hand.

"All better," he promised, smiling at her. "I've got a thermos full of tea if you want something to steady yourself with. You look kind of shakey."

How had that been so easy? Pansy stared at her knee for a moment, then glanced up at Neville, who was now standing above her, with his hand outstretched towards he. She bit her bottom lip and then took his hand, pulling herself up.

"I'm okay." Pansy promised, tucking a bit of hair behind her ear. "I did skip lunch today, but only because I was finishing my essay."

"Then you should definitely have some tea," Neville told Pansy, reaching out and brushing some dried leaves off her coat. "I feel responsible for making sure you get away from the pumpkins in one piece now."

He turned, leading the way back to where he had his crate full of pumpkins to be taken out, as well as the thermos of tea the house-elves had given him. It was chilly out. Neville trusted that Pansy would follow. "What's your essay for?"

Pansy wasn't sure if she actually wanted to follow Neville. She looked around to see if anyone was around them, perhaps looking at them, then slowly walked behind him, chewing her bottom lip. What if someone seen them? What if Tom found out she had talked to a Longbottom?

"It's for..." Pansy glanced around and then shrugged. "Charms. Flitwick is being particularly grumpy this yea."

Neville laughed a little. "Flitwick is always a bit grumpy," he said. "It could be worse. It could be a Potions essay. Although I guess Slytherins don't have the same problems with Snape that the rest of us do." He still terrified Neville.

Neville stopped beside his crate, charming some of the vines to make stools for he and Pansy to sit on, and then pulled out the thermos and poured some of the warm tea into the lid for her. "Nobody can see us from the castle so don't worry. The only people who might come out are Professor Rosier or Professor Weasley and they wouldn't care."

"I know Professor Rosier personally. He's like a father to me." Pansy informed Neville, a bit impressed by how well he'd charmed the vines into chairs. She bit at her lip, then took a seat and then the tea from Neville.

"Snape really isn't that terrifying. He's horribly misunderstood." Pansy replied, sipping at her tea. "He only wants for students to not slack and to do their best. He gets after the Slytherins just as much if they're not doing as they're supposed to."

"I know he's pretty impartial," Neville told Pansy, smiling at her. "He's still terrifying for me. I'm rubbish at Potions. Always blowing things up. Herbology is where I belong. I should have remembered you knew Professor Rosier. Professor Malfoy is always coming into the greenhouses while we're working."

He ran a hand through his curly hair. "Draco's always down here working with the animals with Professor Weasley. Do you mind if he sees us talking?"

"No. Of course not." Pansy worried her fingers at the hem of her skirt. If she didn't make direct eye contact with Neville, she'd probably have a better shot of not thinking about kissing him. Which seemed to always be the case. Most of the time, however, he was not looking at her.

"How have you been?" Pansy asked finally, glancing at the pumpkins. "You know... Since I helped you find Trevor on the train."

"Since the beginning of first year?" Neville's mouth twitched as he looked at Pansy. He could tell she was nervous and he wasn't sure why. He was the one who might get in trouble, if the wrong person saw them talking. "Well, I guess. I mean, over all."

He looked at his pumpkins for a moment, then shrugged. "I know I'm a Gryffindor, but I've survived. How've you been? I saw a picture of you and your boyfriend in Witch Weekly."

Neville knew a lot. His gran fell in line with the Dark Lord's policies, but he wasn't as fond of them. He was best friends with Regulus Black for a reason and he knew all about the werewolf who'd been around when Pansy got kidnapped. "That must have been terrifying," he said, smiling at her.

Neville reached out, brushing their fingers together. "I really hate the way things work," he said, voice soft. "The way people like us have to go about having relationships. The half-bloods have it so much easier. And I know things are way better for me than they are for you. I'm a boy and a Gryffindor and I'm a pure-blood, but my family's pretty downtrodden."

"It was very terrifying. I remember crying the whole time because I thought I was going to get eaten." Pansy thought back to that time, feeling a little fear rise in her again. Especially knowing that Tom was employing werewolves in the school. She looked around nervously. "I don't like werewolves."

Pansy gasped at the feeling of Neville's fingers. It felt like a jolt of electricity between them. She looked back at him, wondering why she felt the way she felt, why she had some strange attraction to the little chunky boy who had grown up... considerably more handsome. "Have you ever had a relationship, Neville?"

"Eaten?" Neville repeated, trying not to laugh as he thought about Remus Lupin. He knew some werewolves were dangerous, but Remus had been making him and Regulus hot chocolate for years. He was harmless. At least around little kids. "I don't think most werewolves eat people. From what I've heard, they're actually pretty normal."

Neville looked at her for a moment. "I dated Luna last year," he said. "And Padma Patil and Hannah Abbott. So... yeah, I guess, is what I'm saying."

That was quite a few girls. Pansy's hand pulled back and she worried her fingers, trying not to think about just how many it was. Three. It was three. Two more than herself. And they were all... Luna was mental. But, Padma's family was rich. And Hannah was just... blonde. And pretty.

"Oh." Pansy managed to say, looking up at him and giving him a brave smile. She took a deep breath, straightening. "Suppose you're a bit more of a serial dater than I am. I've only dated Thoreau. Since... I suppose a week ago."

Neville blinked at Pansy. He wasn't sure what had just happened or how three girlfriends made him a serial dater. "I know," he said. "That's you've only dated Thoreau, I mean. I've... Is it weird to say I've kept up with your gossip? I have. I still remember the girl who helped me find my toad."

He shrugged. "I wouldn't say I'm a serial dater. Padma only dated me to have a boyfriend on Valentine's Day. Luna and Hannah were real relationships, yeah, but Luna and I are much better off as friends."

Neville had kept up on her gossip? That made Pansy's stomach flutter with butterflies. And she hated that feeling. After all, she had a boyfriend. A perfect, romance novel type boyfriend. Thoreau was so handsome and special and he wanted her. That was all that mattered.

"My gossip?" Pansy arched a brow, trying to look as intimidating as she could, though she felt like she was exploding on the inside. "What have you heard, Longbottom?"

"Mostly they cover your shopping trips with Draco Malfoy," Neville admitted, shrugging. He thought Pansy was interesting, and she always looked very pretty in the photos they took of her, but she hadn't really done anything scandalous. "And this week they've been speculating about you and Thoreau Lestrange. You seem smart enough to keep yourself from appearing in them doing anything you'll regret."

"Speculating what? That his hair is better than mine?" Pansy arched a brow and then let out a tiny sigh. "I suppose I am a bit too good to be in the tabloids like that. It's sad that they only talk about my shopping trips, however. I'd like to think I have more to talk about than that."

"I think you do too," Neville said, smiling at Pansy. "They've been wondering how serious you are and are you going to marry him. That sort of thing." He glanced at her. "I've sort of been wondering about it too. ow serious you are. If you're planning on marrying him. It would be a good match, right? He's your best friend's cousin."

Pansy looked back at Neville. It wasn't clear as to what she should be saying here. If she answered honestly, would Neville run around and talk about her? Would he be part of the gossip? She eyed him for a long moment, then shrugged.

"How do I know you're not going to gossip?" Pansy asked, arching a brow. "Giving you all my secrets when you've admitted that you gossip?"

"I never said I gossiped. I said I paid attention to the gossip," Neville corrected. "And only really when it's about you because I like you." He shrugged. "Maybe we didn't keep in touch, but you were my first friend at Hogwarts."

"I'm happy to kiss you like that whenever you want me to," Neville told Pansy, smiling down at her. "Soon, I hope. I want to kiss you like that a lot."

He brushed his fingers through Pansy's hair and then kissed her softly, one more time, before pulling back and grinning at her. "I know I'm not your first choice, but can you give me a chance?"

Pansy wasn't able to say no. But, she knew she had to talk to Thoreau first. "I want to give you a chance." She whispered, her eyes staring back into his. He had nice eyes, didn't he? "I have to talk to Thoreau before I say yes."

Neville nodded, smiling at Pansy. "Of course," he said. He was glad that was her answer. Her caring around Thoreau enough to want to talk to him before she committed to anything was a good sign. Neville wasn't that worried. Pansy had said it was political between them. He kissed her forehead. "I'd never make you cheat on someone. I'm out here or in the greenhouses after classes almost everyday. You can come find me after you talk to him."
