Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Pansy hadn't been able to stop thinking about how everyone around her seemed to be having sex. And her own boyfiend didn't want to touch her like that. He wanted to respect her and while that was noble, it was kind of annoying for her. She was sixteen years old. She thought it was time to lose it already.

But, since there was nothing she could do about it, Pansy was taking a walk to clear her mind. She was walking along the edge of the Forbidden Forest when her heel got caught in one of the pumpkin patch vines, sending her falling down onto her knees hard. She swore, grabbing onto her knee that was now scraped, trying not to cry about it.

Neville Longbottom was a quiet kid. He'd been awkward a chubby most of his life. That, plus being sorted into Gryffindor and having parents who were known traitors, made him pretty good at keeping his head down. It was a good survival tactic at Hogwarts, where the Slytherins owned the school. He got along with Professor Rosier though, and Professor Weasley, so he spent a lot of time in the greenhouses and outdoors, taking care of the plants. He was going to be an excellent herbologist some day.

He was just picking some of the riper pumpkins to bring to the elves to make pasties with when he heard a crash and then someone swearing. A girl. Neville put his pumpkin down and walked over to where the sound had come from. People didn't usually come this close to the forest.

Pansy Parkinson was the last person he was expecting to see, but he remembered how nice she'd been to him before they'd been sorted into opposite houses, and she looked close to tears. He was a Gryffindor. Retreating to a safe distance in the forest to wait for her to leave wasn't really an option. "You all right?" Neville asked, pulling off his gloves and kneeling beside Pansy in the pumpkin patch.

Neville Longbottom. Pansy's stomach did a small, stupid flutter of butterflies before she looked down at her knee. Her cheeks turned a shade of pink and she wiped at her eyes quickly so that he couldn't see her tears. She didn't want to be a stupid, weak girl in front of him.

"I'm okay." Pansy said, trying to ignore the bleeding. "The vines were a little longer than I thought they'd be. I'm not a stupid girl or anything like that."

Neville gave Pansy an odd look as he pulled out his wand. "I didn't think you were," he said. "You scraped up your knee pretty badly." He cleaned the leg up and then healed her wound and got to his feet, offering Pansy his hand.

"All better," he promised, smiling at her. "I've got a thermos full of tea if you want something to steady yourself with. You look kind of shakey."

How had that been so easy? Pansy stared at her knee for a moment, then glanced up at Neville, who was now standing above her, with his hand outstretched towards he. She bit her bottom lip and then took his hand, pulling herself up.

"I'm okay." Pansy promised, tucking a bit of hair behind her ear. "I did skip lunch today, but only because I was finishing my essay."

"Then you should definitely have some tea," Neville told Pansy, reaching out and brushing some dried leaves off her coat. "I feel responsible for making sure you get away from the pumpkins in one piece now."

He turned, leading the way back to where he had his crate full of pumpkins to be taken out, as well as the thermos of tea the house-elves had given him. It was chilly out. Neville trusted that Pansy would follow. "What's your essay for?"

Pansy wasn't sure if she actually wanted to follow Neville. She looked around to see if anyone was around them, perhaps looking at them, then slowly walked behind him, chewing her bottom lip. What if someone seen them? What if Tom found out she had talked to a Longbottom?

"It's for..." Pansy glanced around and then shrugged. "Charms. Flitwick is being particularly grumpy this yea."

Neville laughed a little. "Flitwick is always a bit grumpy," he said. "It could be worse. It could be a Potions essay. Although I guess Slytherins don't have the same problems with Snape that the rest of us do." He still terrified Neville.

Neville stopped beside his crate, charming some of the vines to make stools for he and Pansy to sit on, and then pulled out the thermos and poured some of the warm tea into the lid for her. "Nobody can see us from the castle so don't worry. The only people who might come out are Professor Rosier or Professor Weasley and they wouldn't care."

"I know Professor Rosier personally. He's like a father to me." Pansy informed Neville, a bit impressed by how well he'd charmed the vines into chairs. She bit at her lip, then took a seat and then the tea from Neville.

"Snape really isn't that terrifying. He's horribly misunderstood." Pansy replied, sipping at her tea. "He only wants for students to not slack and to do their best. He gets after the Slytherins just as much if they're not doing as they're supposed to."

"I know he's pretty impartial," Neville told Pansy, smiling at her. "He's still terrifying for me. I'm rubbish at Potions. Always blowing things up. Herbology is where I belong. I should have remembered you knew Professor Rosier. Professor Malfoy is always coming into the greenhouses while we're working."

He ran a hand through his curly hair. "Draco's always down here working with the animals with Professor Weasley. Do you mind if he sees us talking?"

"No. Of course not." Pansy worried her fingers at the hem of her skirt. If she didn't make direct eye contact with Neville, she'd probably have a better shot of not thinking about kissing him. Which seemed to always be the case. Most of the time, however, he was not looking at her.

"How have you been?" Pansy asked finally, glancing at the pumpkins. "You know... Since I helped you find Trevor on the train."

"Since the beginning of first year?" Neville's mouth twitched as he looked at Pansy. He could tell she was nervous and he wasn't sure why. He was the one who might get in trouble, if the wrong person saw them talking. "Well, I guess. I mean, over all."

He looked at his pumpkins for a moment, then shrugged. "I know I'm a Gryffindor, but I've survived. How've you been? I saw a picture of you and your boyfriend in Witch Weekly."

Pansy frowned at that for a moment. A picture of her and her boyfriend in Witch Weekly? How had she missed that. She glanced down at her tea, tapping her fingers against the cup.

"There was a picture of Thoreau and I? Already?" She asked and then shook her head. "I don't recall seeing that."

"This morning," Neville said. "The new issue. I don't normally read it, but Luna was flipping through it beside me so I saw." He shrugged. The Lestranges were an uncomfortable area for Neville. He knew enough to keep his mouth shut about it, but Pansy was clever.

"I didn't know you were dating before then." He glanced at Pansy for a moment, then took a sip directly from his thermos of tea. "So what classes did you end up liking? You said you were going to be good at Ancient Runes when we were eleven."

Pansy knew about Neville's parents. It was common knowledge of what Bellatrix and Rodolphus had done to them. It wasn't something she supported and certainly not anything she was going to say to Neville.

"We recently started dating." Pansy admitted, glancing at Neville's tea cup as well. "I'm still good at Ancient Runes, but I'm better at Potions and Arithmancy."

Neville nodded. "I'm not in Ancient Runes," he said. "I took Creatures and Divination as my electives, but I've dropped Divination. It's a bollocks class unless you have some natural talent for it." He laughed a little. "My friends and I used to just come up with horrible things that could happen to us and predict those for our future. It improved our marks."

He glanced up at Pansy. "My friend Regulus is dating June Riddle now," he said. "You're friends with her, right? You hang out with the Malfoys all the time so I kind of assume you know her, at least."

"You should have tried for Ancient Runes. It looks good on your resumes for jobs when you graduate." Pansy pointed out, swirling her tea a bit with a finger, watching as the liquid spun.

Pansy allowed herself to glance up at him. "You friend Regulus is going to get himself into trouble. You can't date Tom Riddle's daughter."

"I'm going to apprentice with Professor Rosier after Hogwarts," Neville told Pansy, giving her a small smile. "He's already asked me and I said yes. It's a great opportunity. I'd love to teach someday."

He snorted. "Telling Regulus that would just make him more determined, I think. I'm pretty sure his middle name is literally trouble. He's pretty wild."

"It's actually Orion." Pansy pointed out, then blushed a bit. Why had she been so matter-of-fact? It didn't matter what Regulus's middle name was. She just had... pureblood knowledge, was all.

She bit her lip. "You really want to teach? I remember you haven't no idea what you were going to do here when you were on that train."

Neville raised his eyebrows at Pansy. "So I guess you paid attention during all those lessons I managed to tune out?" he asked, laughing. "My gran tried to hammer that stuff into my head, but it doesn't have the room."

He shrugged. "It's been a few years. I've had time to figure it out. I tutor a lot of the younger Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs. I like doing it. And I'm really good with plants. If I was a professor I'd have time to do research and still be able to teach too. What about you?"

"I had to pay attention." Pansy pointed out with a shrug. "It's going to be useful when I have to be a socialite and throw parties for my husband. It's all part of the basic training." She chewed at her bottom lip, feeling stupid. Neville wasn't part of this world.

"I'm awful with plants. I've killed all the ones I've ever been given." Pansy sighed dramatically and then looked at Neville. "What do you mean?" She asked. "As a job?"

Neville glanced at the pumpkins and laughed. "Maybe they were just getting revenge for their fallen comrades earlier than," he said. "I've always been good with them. And animals. Not as good as your friend Draco, though."

He looked at her again and nodded. "Yeah. As a job. You're too clever to be a socialite and nothing else. Won't you get bored?"

"Draco isn't so good with them right now." Pansy admitted with a soft sigh. She couldn't tell Neville everything that she knew, but she wanted to talk about it. "He's somehow lost his memories. People aren't sure how, but he can't remember things."

Pansy laughed at that. "I don't really have a choice." She pointed out. "It's... kind of what I was born to do. Unless I marry someone who will allow me to do something else."

Neville frowned a little. "Really? That's messed up," he said. "Something must have happened to him. I mean, there are people who would attack him for being who he is, you know? You got kidnapped once just for being his friend, didn't you? I remember it was in the papers."

He shook his head. "You shouldn't marry anyone who would stop you from living a full life," Neville said. "If you get a choice."

Pansy was a bit surprised by what knowledge Neville seemed to have. She chewed at her bottom lip and nodded, feeling a little nervous around Neville. Why did he know so much? "Yes. I was kidnapped with Merlin and Draco. There was a werewolf there."

She shuddered visibly at that and then looked back at the boy. "I don't get a choice. I will essentially go to the highest bidder for my hand. That's how it works, so long as it's a pureblood."
