Thoreau smiled at Rooney for a moment, then served Rex a few pieces of roast. "Your father's really been looking forward to seeing you. It's been a long time," he said, reaching out and ruffling his son's hair, then serving Rooney a heaping portion of meat before putting some on Lavinia and his plates. "I separated the potatoes and carrots and there's plenty of gravy." He looked at Rex and his friend. "How long have you two been dating?"
Lavinia sat next to Rex, trying not to find his parents too odd now that she knew things about them. Apparently getting the first serving of meat was a thing. And then Thoreau was asking about them dating. She gave him a startled look. "I -- uh -- we're just friends," she said, resisting the urge to inform the table that Rex had slept with her brother.
