Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Lavinia and Rex had texted a lot since they'd gotten off together, but they hadn't really talked about the whole... getting off them, and Rex had cancelled their work out that morning and Lavinia was beginning to feel like maybe getting off with your new -- and only -- friend was actually a terrible idea. Look at Scorpius and Albus. They weren't even talking anymore. Lavinia liked having Rex as her friend. He baked her things and they got along so well.

So Lavinia was going to fix things because she was smart and she could handle this and her dad would probably kill Rex or her or both of them if he was her boyfriend anyway. She showed up outside Rex's flat after school -- after changing into some of the so-called frumpy clothes Rex hated -- and knocked on the door, intent on repairing everything. A handsome, older man answered the door, smiling at her with a confused look on his face, and Lavinia found herself almost wishing she hadn't changed out of her uniform so she could pretend to be selling something for school and retreat. Obviously, Rex was shooting today or something. Or had an older boyfriend. Or... something. "Is... Is Rex in?" Lavinia asked, feeling shy. Of course getting off hadn't ruined their friendship. Rex was just busy and she was a stupid teenage girl who jumped to weird conclusions because of one cancelled workout. "I'm his friend."

She mostly expected to be turned away or told Rex was busy working or something, but the man stepped aside to let her in. "He's in the kitchen helping me make dinner," he said, leading the way down the hall. Now that Lavinia really looked at him, he seemed kind of familiar, but she couldn't quite place him. "Rex, you have a visitor. Done decorating the cake yet? I can finish up dinner. We've got fifteen minutes before he's due to arrive."

Rex had been kind of busy. He had texted Lavinia, but he was more worried about his father coming home to really hang out with her. He was just putting the last bit of chocolate curls on the top of the cake when his Dad said he had a visitor.

He glanced over his shoulder, seeing Lavinia, then gave her a nervous smile. "Hey. What are you doing here?" He asked as he moved towards her, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Is it safe for her to be here?"

"Safe?" Lavinia repeated, pulling back slightly from the hug that felt a little too good. She gave Rex a slightly worried look. "I just thought I'd come and see you, but you're busy. I probably should have texted a warning."

Thoreau honestly wasn't one hundred percent sure that it was safe for a pretty girl to be around, but he nodded. Usually the hospital judged Rooney's self-control levels pretty well, and he was there to distract him. "It should be okay. He'll just be happy to see us again." He smiled. "It's been a year. He's on his anklet." Thoreau held his hand out to the girl. "I'm Thoreau, Rex's father."

Rex's father. That made a lot of sense, even if the rest of it didn't. "It's nice to meet you, Sir," Lavinia said, smiling. "I'm Lavinia." She looked at Rex again. "I can go."

"No. It's okay. Dad says it's okay." Rex smiled at her and shook his head. "It's just that.. my Dad is getting out of the hospital today. And he's not exactly stable. And-"

Rooney walked into the flat and took a look around, finding his son easy enough. "I'm home, faggots." He reached out and grabbed Thoreau, pushing him back against the counter.

Lavinia jumped a little when Rex's other father walked into the kitchen and grabbed the pretty one, shoving him against the counter, and then Thoreau was snogging Rex's other father, so apparently that was okay. Lavinia looked up at Rex. "I see what you mean," she said. "Do you need me to bumble around trying to help you in the kitchen if they're busy?"

Thoreau pulled back for air after a moment, laughing and wrapping his arms around Rooney. "I missed you," he said. "Rex missed you too. We've been cooking your welcome home feast all day. Rex has a friend over."

Rooney pulled back to look at his son, then at the girl. He arched a brow. "I thought you were a fag or something. Don't you fuck men for a living?" He asked.

"And women. Lavinia is my friend." Rex took a step in front of her so his father wouldn't look at her for too long and get any ideas.

Lavinia was sort of mildly terrified of Rex's father, but it seemed rude to let him know that. She waved a bit from behind Rex. "It's nice to meet you," she said. "Sorry I'm intruding."

"Do you want something to drink?" Thoreau asked, to distract Rooney. "Pot roast is almost done cooking. I wish they'd just let me feed you while you're in there. The hospital food is crap."

"I've been eating that hospital food since we met. I'm used to it." Rooney pointed out, trying to ignore that his son was trying to hide his girlfriend from him. He frowned. "I'm not going to fuck her or anything. What's your problem? I couldn't wait to get home to see you and you're treating me like a terrorist."

"I'm not..." Rex sighed softly and shook his head. "I was just worried because... you didn't like my friend last time. And you made sure he knew that."

"It'll be fine," Thoreau said, rubbing Rooney's arm. "Rex and I have been looking forward to this. I think you're going to stay out this time." He smiled at Rooney, then moved to the over to check on dinner. "Rex, you and Lavinia should set the table."

Lavinia did not know what kind of family drama was going on, but was going to have to make the best of it. "I don't know, Rex. Your dads have both been much nicer to me so far than my dads were to you when they met you."

Rooney walked over to where Lavinia was standing. "Most parents are cunts." He told her, then held out his hand to the girl. He looked her over for a moment, then hummed.

"You look familiar." He told her. "Who are your parents? Do I know them?"

"My dads are usually okay, but they got judgmental about Rex." Lavinia shook Rooney's hand, looking way up at him. Obviously Thoreau was Rex's actual father, because Rex had a really nice body and everything, but he wasn't built like a house the way his other dad was.

"My parents are Merlin Riddle, Draco Malfoy, and Pansy Parkinson," she said. "But biologically I'm a Riddle. I live with my dads full-time, though. Mum lives in the same building, just on the floor below us. Do you know them?"

"I know Draco and Pansy. They were locked up with me for a bit of time." Rooney told her, smirking. "Rider raped your Mum, didn't he? Rider Macnair."

"Dad." Rex frowned at him and shook his head. "Inappropriate conversation."

This was a really inappropriate conversation and Lavinia wasn't quite sure how to respond, but she wanted Rooney to like her more than he'd liked Rex's last friend. "It's fine," she told Rex. "I have no idea if he did or not. I don't think so. Mum's always been with Luka." She shrugged. "And my brother dated Rider's son for years, but Xavier's not much like his dad." She'd liked him a lot until he cheated on her favourite brother.

Thoreau shook his head as he too the roast out of the oven. "It's so strange to me that you all know each other. I didn't have any desire to keep in touch with people when I got out of the hospital."

"That's because you hated them all. I thought you'd liked that Pyxis bitch until she told on you for cutting yourself up and letting me hit you." Rooney told Thoreau, shrugging. "You could have kept in touch."

Rooney looked at the girl. "Do you want something to drink? There's probably whiskey here somewhere. Still an alcoholic, Rex?"

Rex looked at his father sadly and shook his head. "No. I was never an alcoholic. I'll... be back." He told them all, then walked to his room to calm himself down.

"I'm okay, thanks," Lavinia told Rex's father. "I'm just going to go check on him." Because obviously he was upset and his parents probably weren't going to be able to help with it, since they seemed like the cause.

She walked to Rex's room and shut the door behind herself, leaning against it. "Are you okay?" she asked. "I'm sorry I'm intruding like this. I really should have called ahead."

"This isn't your fault." Rex informed her, shaking his head. He sighed heavily and leaned in, brushing their lips together, pulling her close. "You'd have to meet him sooner or later. I just... didn't know he was getting out."

Rooney stared at where both of them had left and frowned. "What's his problem?" He asked. "I was trying to talk to them. Get to know her."

Lavinia wrapped her arms around Rex's neck, kissing his cheek. "You're not happy about it? Him getting out? I mean, he was a bit... inappropriate, but he's your dad, right?"

Thoreau reached out, rubbing Rooney's arm. "He didn't know you were getting out. He'll be fine," he said. "I think you were doing a good job getting to know her, Roo. Do you want me to get you something to drink?"

"Yeah. He's my dad but he's mental." Rex sighed softly, looking Lavinia over. "And I don't mean like your parents. I mean, he's really fucking messed up. He got put into the hospital the first time for raping and murdering a woman. Because he could. Not for any other reason. He beats my dad up all the time and while my Dad likes it, I don't. And he's not very good at socializing with people."

Rooney frowned to himself and shook his head. "No. I don't need anything." He told him. "I missed my kid. I thought about him every day. But, everytime I come home, it's like he hates me more. I only go back so I can fix myself to be better for him. He's my baby."

Lavinia frowned at that. "Your relationship with your parents sounds way more complicated than mine," she said, shaking her head. "I can see why you're conflicted about this. Is he staying here, or are he and your father leaving after dinner?"

"He knows that, Roo," Thoreau promised. "He's happy to see you. He made you a cake. Rex is going to be one of the top pastry chefs in the world once he retires from porn. He's just nervous because it's been so long since the two of you have seen each other. He'll warm up."

"They'll go back to their own place after dinner." Rex sighed softly and looked at Lavinia. "Don't get me wrong. I like my dad well enough. It's just that... I don't know. He's been gone so often in my life that it's weird when he comes back."

Rooney glanced at the cake for a moment, then sighed. "Should I go try and talk to them or something?"

Lavinia nodded. "That makes sense," she said. "Your dad probably misses you a lot, you know? Being gone all the time. Maybe he's super inappropriate, but you can't pick your relatives." She kissed Rex's cheek. "If it's too much for you again I can pretend my ovary burst or something and you can rush me away and hide out at my place."

Thoreau looked in the direction of Rex's bedroom. "They might be snogging," he said. "I'm not sure if she's his girlfriend or not. She looked a little young. Go, just knock before you walk in."

"Your ovary burst? What the fuck?" Rex laughed softly and shook his head. "There is something wrong with you, Riddle." He pressed a kiss to her nose and sighed when there was a knock at the door. "Come in."

Rooney opened the door and glanced at his son with the girl on the bed. "You want to come eat? I'm hungry." He said, trying not to sound mean or overbearing.

Lavinia laughed when Rex kissed her nose, then looked up at his dad in the door. "Yeah," she said, standing up and grabbing Rex's hand. "The food you and your other dad made smells amazing. Plus I saw your cake. It looked even better than your brownies." She tugged Rex to his feet, pulling him out of the bedroom. There was always her ovary.

Thoreau looked up when everyone started coming back into the kitchen, smiling and setting the roast down in the middle of the table. "There should be plenty of food for everyone. I cooked the biggest roast I could find."

Rooney followed behind his kid and sighed to himself. Was he a bad father? He'd always tried really hard to make Rex love him. He sat down at the table and looked at the roast. "Rex can get first serve."

Rex sat down at the table and arched a brow at that. "I can?" He asked, then looked at Thoreau.

Thoreau smiled at Rooney for a moment, then served Rex a few pieces of roast. "Your father's really been looking forward to seeing you. It's been a long time," he said, reaching out and ruffling his son's hair, then serving Rooney a heaping portion of meat before putting some on Lavinia and his plates. "I separated the potatoes and carrots and there's plenty of gravy." He looked at Rex and his friend. "How long have you two been dating?"

Lavinia sat next to Rex, trying not to find his parents too odd now that she knew things about them. Apparently getting the first serving of meat was a thing. And then Thoreau was asking about them dating. She gave him a startled look. "I -- uh -- we're just friends," she said, resisting the urge to inform the table that Rex had slept with her brother.

"Yeah. She doesn't like me like that." Rex admitted as he looked at his father, shrugging. "I'm just the gay porn star who shagged her brother and bakes her brownies. Not that I'm gay. That's just what people think of me."

Rooney looked his son over, then glanced at the girl. "You must be stupid if you don't want to date my son. Even if he fucked your brother."

Lavinia opened her mouth to protest that, then closed it quickly. She did not want to broach the idea of her and Rex dating at dinner with his parents. "I don't think of you like that," she told Rex, looking at him, and then glancing at his father. "I think Rex is amazing and talented. The only people who care that he slept with my brother are my brother's ex-boyfriend and my dads. It doesn't matter to me. Neither does him being a porn star."

She looked at Rex again. "You're probably like... my best friend right now." Which was maybe a little sad considering how long they'd know each other, but Lavinia liked him.

Rex glanced at Lavinia and shook his head. "You don't really have to explain yourself to me, Vin. It's okay. I don't know why my Dad is being such a prick about it. It's not like I have to date everyone I come into contact with. Maybe I should smack you around a little bit or something like he does my dad."

Rooney gave his son a hurt look, then glanced down at his food. He wasn't even hungry anymore. He pushed back from the table, just barely able to blink the tears away. "I think I should go. I'll see you at home, Reau."

Lavinia definitely should have let first thing. She watched Thoreau get up to go after Rex's dad and ran a hand through her hair. "I'm sorry," she said. "I interrupted you getting ready and I made everything awkward."

Thoreau followed Rooney out of the kitchen, grabbing his arm. "Roo, don't go. Please. Rex doesn't know what he's saying. It's just him trying to be cool in front of his friend. You know what kids are like. He loves you."

"You didn't make anything awkward. I didn't like the way he was talking to you, is all." Rex told her with a shrug. "You don't have to fancy me just because we're friends and got off together. I never pretended that you fancied me."

"No. He doesn't." Rooney looked back at Thoreau with tears in his eyes. "He doesn't give two shits about me. He thinks I'm a fucking bad person. That I'm mental."

Lavinia did fancy Rex, though. Now seemed like a bad time to bring it up, especially since he'd basically just told her that he didn't fancy her. "I know," she said. "Just... I don't know. My dad's really protective of me too, so I get it."

"I know you're not." Thoreau touched Rooney's face, kissing him softly. "Rex does too. He doesn't think you're mental. He knows how hard you work when you have to go to the hospital. He knows you do it for him. You're a great dad, Roo. You've always been a great dad."

"I don't think that you do." Rex shook his head and looked at her. "I actually like you. Fancy you. That makes it about ten times worse for me. Your family would never accept me as a porn star. So..."

Rooney shook his head. "How am I supposed to be a good father? I didn't even have one. Just fuck off, Thoreau. Leave me alone and let me go home. I don't want to be around him anymore. He doesn't like me."

"So what?" Lavinia asked, frowning at Rex. He fancied her? Well, they had gotten off together. It made sense. "I fancy you too," she told him. "My family shouldn't have anything to do with it."

Thoreau didn't want to fuck off, but he nodded, letting go of Rooney. "I'll say goodbye to Rex and his friend and I'll bring dinner home," he said. "I'm sorry, Roo."

"Your family will have a lot to do with it." Rex told her with a soft sigh. "Your dad is never going to approve of me. Especially when he realises who my parents are. My job is going to make him hate me regardless. And you're his daughter. He has all these hopes and dreams for you. And you want to make him happy. So, I don't see you keeping me around."

Rooney shook his head. "Don't bother. I won't eat it. Tell him he can go fuck himself and eat his fucking cake." He walked off.

"So you don't even want to try?" Lavinia asked, feeling hurt. She cared about what her father thought of her, yeah, but not so much that she'd throw away something that made her happy to appease him. She looked down at her hands. "I guess I get it. It would be complicated. Will you at least still be my friend?"

Thoreau watched Rooney leave, running a hand through his hair, and took a deep breath to calm himself before he walked into the kitchen. "Your father left," he said, looking at Rex. "He was really looking forward to seeing you again, Rex. You're his baby. He misses you when he's in the hospital. He only goes back in for you."

"He's only angry now because he's upset his son wasn't as happy to see him as he'd hoped," Thoreau told Rex, giving him a sad look. "You know he doesn't want to hurt people who don't want to be hurt. He never means to do it anymore. He's a good man, Rex. He loves us both very much which is why we have the power to hurt him so much emotionally."

Thoreau was trying to ignore the fact that Rex's friend was there. "I'll leave the food with you. Roo told me not to bring it home. If you want to see him, call and I'll make sure he's in a good mood when you come over. And you should come see him, Rex. He's your father."
