"He's only angry now because he's upset his son wasn't as happy to see him as he'd hoped," Thoreau told Rex, giving him a sad look. "You know he doesn't want to hurt people who don't want to be hurt. He never means to do it anymore. He's a good man, Rex. He loves us both very much which is why we have the power to hurt him so much emotionally."
Thoreau was trying to ignore the fact that Rex's friend was there. "I'll leave the food with you. Roo told me not to bring it home. If you want to see him, call and I'll make sure he's in a good mood when you come over. And you should come see him, Rex. He's your father."
