Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Lavinia and Rex had texted a lot since they'd gotten off together, but they hadn't really talked about the whole... getting off them, and Rex had cancelled their work out that morning and Lavinia was beginning to feel like maybe getting off with your new -- and only -- friend was actually a terrible idea. Look at Scorpius and Albus. They weren't even talking anymore. Lavinia liked having Rex as her friend. He baked her things and they got along so well.

So Lavinia was going to fix things because she was smart and she could handle this and her dad would probably kill Rex or her or both of them if he was her boyfriend anyway. She showed up outside Rex's flat after school -- after changing into some of the so-called frumpy clothes Rex hated -- and knocked on the door, intent on repairing everything. A handsome, older man answered the door, smiling at her with a confused look on his face, and Lavinia found herself almost wishing she hadn't changed out of her uniform so she could pretend to be selling something for school and retreat. Obviously, Rex was shooting today or something. Or had an older boyfriend. Or... something. "Is... Is Rex in?" Lavinia asked, feeling shy. Of course getting off hadn't ruined their friendship. Rex was just busy and she was a stupid teenage girl who jumped to weird conclusions because of one cancelled workout. "I'm his friend."

She mostly expected to be turned away or told Rex was busy working or something, but the man stepped aside to let her in. "He's in the kitchen helping me make dinner," he said, leading the way down the hall. Now that Lavinia really looked at him, he seemed kind of familiar, but she couldn't quite place him. "Rex, you have a visitor. Done decorating the cake yet? I can finish up dinner. We've got fifteen minutes before he's due to arrive."

Rex glanced at Lavinia, then took a deep breath and shook his head. "I want to try. I-" His father came into the room and Rex looked up at him, listening to his scolding. He sighed softly.

"I wasn't looking forward to seeing him." Rex shook his head. "When he's home, I have to live in constant fear that he's going to get angry."

"He's only angry now because he's upset his son wasn't as happy to see him as he'd hoped," Thoreau told Rex, giving him a sad look. "You know he doesn't want to hurt people who don't want to be hurt. He never means to do it anymore. He's a good man, Rex. He loves us both very much which is why we have the power to hurt him so much emotionally."

Thoreau was trying to ignore the fact that Rex's friend was there. "I'll leave the food with you. Roo told me not to bring it home. If you want to see him, call and I'll make sure he's in a good mood when you come over. And you should come see him, Rex. He's your father."
