Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

Lavinia and Rex had texted a lot since they'd gotten off together, but they hadn't really talked about the whole... getting off them, and Rex had cancelled their work out that morning and Lavinia was beginning to feel like maybe getting off with your new -- and only -- friend was actually a terrible idea. Look at Scorpius and Albus. They weren't even talking anymore. Lavinia liked having Rex as her friend. He baked her things and they got along so well.

So Lavinia was going to fix things because she was smart and she could handle this and her dad would probably kill Rex or her or both of them if he was her boyfriend anyway. She showed up outside Rex's flat after school -- after changing into some of the so-called frumpy clothes Rex hated -- and knocked on the door, intent on repairing everything. A handsome, older man answered the door, smiling at her with a confused look on his face, and Lavinia found herself almost wishing she hadn't changed out of her uniform so she could pretend to be selling something for school and retreat. Obviously, Rex was shooting today or something. Or had an older boyfriend. Or... something. "Is... Is Rex in?" Lavinia asked, feeling shy. Of course getting off hadn't ruined their friendship. Rex was just busy and she was a stupid teenage girl who jumped to weird conclusions because of one cancelled workout. "I'm his friend."

She mostly expected to be turned away or told Rex was busy working or something, but the man stepped aside to let her in. "He's in the kitchen helping me make dinner," he said, leading the way down the hall. Now that Lavinia really looked at him, he seemed kind of familiar, but she couldn't quite place him. "Rex, you have a visitor. Done decorating the cake yet? I can finish up dinner. We've got fifteen minutes before he's due to arrive."

"Yeah. She doesn't like me like that." Rex admitted as he looked at his father, shrugging. "I'm just the gay porn star who shagged her brother and bakes her brownies. Not that I'm gay. That's just what people think of me."

Rooney looked his son over, then glanced at the girl. "You must be stupid if you don't want to date my son. Even if he fucked your brother."

Lavinia opened her mouth to protest that, then closed it quickly. She did not want to broach the idea of her and Rex dating at dinner with his parents. "I don't think of you like that," she told Rex, looking at him, and then glancing at his father. "I think Rex is amazing and talented. The only people who care that he slept with my brother are my brother's ex-boyfriend and my dads. It doesn't matter to me. Neither does him being a porn star."

She looked at Rex again. "You're probably like... my best friend right now." Which was maybe a little sad considering how long they'd know each other, but Lavinia liked him.

Rex glanced at Lavinia and shook his head. "You don't really have to explain yourself to me, Vin. It's okay. I don't know why my Dad is being such a prick about it. It's not like I have to date everyone I come into contact with. Maybe I should smack you around a little bit or something like he does my dad."

Rooney gave his son a hurt look, then glanced down at his food. He wasn't even hungry anymore. He pushed back from the table, just barely able to blink the tears away. "I think I should go. I'll see you at home, Reau."

Lavinia definitely should have let first thing. She watched Thoreau get up to go after Rex's dad and ran a hand through her hair. "I'm sorry," she said. "I interrupted you getting ready and I made everything awkward."

Thoreau followed Rooney out of the kitchen, grabbing his arm. "Roo, don't go. Please. Rex doesn't know what he's saying. It's just him trying to be cool in front of his friend. You know what kids are like. He loves you."

"You didn't make anything awkward. I didn't like the way he was talking to you, is all." Rex told her with a shrug. "You don't have to fancy me just because we're friends and got off together. I never pretended that you fancied me."

"No. He doesn't." Rooney looked back at Thoreau with tears in his eyes. "He doesn't give two shits about me. He thinks I'm a fucking bad person. That I'm mental."

Lavinia did fancy Rex, though. Now seemed like a bad time to bring it up, especially since he'd basically just told her that he didn't fancy her. "I know," she said. "Just... I don't know. My dad's really protective of me too, so I get it."

"I know you're not." Thoreau touched Rooney's face, kissing him softly. "Rex does too. He doesn't think you're mental. He knows how hard you work when you have to go to the hospital. He knows you do it for him. You're a great dad, Roo. You've always been a great dad."

"I don't think that you do." Rex shook his head and looked at her. "I actually like you. Fancy you. That makes it about ten times worse for me. Your family would never accept me as a porn star. So..."

Rooney shook his head. "How am I supposed to be a good father? I didn't even have one. Just fuck off, Thoreau. Leave me alone and let me go home. I don't want to be around him anymore. He doesn't like me."

"So what?" Lavinia asked, frowning at Rex. He fancied her? Well, they had gotten off together. It made sense. "I fancy you too," she told him. "My family shouldn't have anything to do with it."

Thoreau didn't want to fuck off, but he nodded, letting go of Rooney. "I'll say goodbye to Rex and his friend and I'll bring dinner home," he said. "I'm sorry, Roo."

"Your family will have a lot to do with it." Rex told her with a soft sigh. "Your dad is never going to approve of me. Especially when he realises who my parents are. My job is going to make him hate me regardless. And you're his daughter. He has all these hopes and dreams for you. And you want to make him happy. So, I don't see you keeping me around."

Rooney shook his head. "Don't bother. I won't eat it. Tell him he can go fuck himself and eat his fucking cake." He walked off.

"So you don't even want to try?" Lavinia asked, feeling hurt. She cared about what her father thought of her, yeah, but not so much that she'd throw away something that made her happy to appease him. She looked down at her hands. "I guess I get it. It would be complicated. Will you at least still be my friend?"

Thoreau watched Rooney leave, running a hand through his hair, and took a deep breath to calm himself before he walked into the kitchen. "Your father left," he said, looking at Rex. "He was really looking forward to seeing you again, Rex. You're his baby. He misses you when he's in the hospital. He only goes back in for you."

Rex glanced at Lavinia, then took a deep breath and shook his head. "I want to try. I-" His father came into the room and Rex looked up at him, listening to his scolding. He sighed softly.

"I wasn't looking forward to seeing him." Rex shook his head. "When he's home, I have to live in constant fear that he's going to get angry."

"He's only angry now because he's upset his son wasn't as happy to see him as he'd hoped," Thoreau told Rex, giving him a sad look. "You know he doesn't want to hurt people who don't want to be hurt. He never means to do it anymore. He's a good man, Rex. He loves us both very much which is why we have the power to hurt him so much emotionally."

Thoreau was trying to ignore the fact that Rex's friend was there. "I'll leave the food with you. Roo told me not to bring it home. If you want to see him, call and I'll make sure he's in a good mood when you come over. And you should come see him, Rex. He's your father."
