open to all of the BAU!
Three months into the BAU, and Micah was fitting in like he'd been there all along. Mick had grown quite fond of him, though that might have had something to do with Wyatt's liking of the man. Mick found it terribly cute. Wyatt and Micah had weekly dinners together, and lately they'd been going to see foreign films together. It seemed to happen every Thursday night, so every Friday morning Mick was sure to show up early to get some tidbits from Wyatt himself. She knew that the younger team member really liked Micah, enough to ask random questions about dating and relationships. Of course Wyatt thought that he was being inconspicious about it, but Mick knew better.

At the moment, she was sitting at her desk and Wyatt was in Jude's little office down the hall. Probably asking dating questions or... something like that, which Mick thought was ridiculously adorable. When she saw Beckett walk by with some files in his hands looking a little stressed, she thought nothing of it. That happened quiet often, given his job.

Inside Jude's office, Jude was busy trying to make sense of a Sudoku puzzle while he talked with Wyatt, and when Wyatt lifted a finger to his puzzle and opened his mouth Jude held up his pencil in warning.

"If you tell me the answers I will stab you with this pencil," he said warningly.

"I still say the best approach to this puzzle is the Swordfish strategy. Because of the pairing techniques, a 9 cannot go there; its possibility is entirely excluded," he did retract his finger rather quickly though in hopes that didn't count as giving him the answers. Wyatt had worked the puzzle over the other man's shoulder without the need for a pencil.

The atmosphere at Quantico had been relaxed, if such a thing were possible given their job. The cases they worked were always difficult, but some were easier to deal with than others. A good deal of their work lately had either been with the FBI academy, or with paperwork, all very theoretical and easy to handle. Wyatt had been glad for it. He sat in silence for a few seconds, and then decided to speak his mind, a question he'd long been wanting to ask Jude but never mustered the courage. "How many people have you kissed?"

At Wyatt's words, Jude furrowed his brow and lowered his gaze back down to the puzzle. He was rather good at math, but Wyatt was a genius in his own right, so he was inclined to take the younger man's advice. At the question that Wyatt presented him with next, though, he blinked and put the puzzle down in his lap as he swiveled his chair around so that he could face Wyatt more fully.

"Why?" he asked curiously.

Wyatt almost jumped when Jude actually swiveled around to face him and he looked as if he'd been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. After a moment, he tried to offer a casual shrug of his shoulders but it was stiff and nervous. "You know me; I ask questions for the sake of asking them. Perhaps I'm conducting research on the sexual experience of hackers." He was miserable at lying and really he wasn't trying to be convincing, just stalling.

Jude narrowed his eyes suspiciously as Wyatt fumbled over his words. It always amazed him that the BAU team had such a terrible time lying, he figured they would know how to do so perfectly.

"I don't know," he answered slowly after a moment. "I've been kissing since I was thirteen."

Wyatt looked surprised and reverent. "Thirteen?" He hadn't been expecting that. Not that he thought Jude wasn't handsome, but he'd thought perhaps the young man had shared some of his nerdier experiences from childhood, being a romantic outcast one of them. He looked down at his fingers, fidgeting some more. "Oh, then I suppose you have some experience."

Jude had been a bit awkward, but he had a more social personality than Wyatt probably had. The word experience caused Jude to tip his head to the side curiously and he glanced at the door to make sure that no one was lingering outside of it before he returned his attention to his friend.

"Are you... Interested in someone?" he asked after a moment, and he even lowered his voice.

"No," Wyatt shook his head, then paused. "Yes," he amended with a sigh. "It just got me thinking is all. Say I wanted to take up mountain climbing," something Wyatt would never ever do given his discomfort with dangling from cliff faces, "I would begin by practicing in smaller, safer arenas, with plenty of padding and instruction."

He glanced at the door like Jude had, appreciating the lowered voice because this was indeed a sensitive matter and Wyatt honestly thought he was being somewhat stealth about it. "It makes sense, doesn't it?"

Jude blinked, and with each word that Wyatt spoke, he grew more and more curious though he had an idea of who the younger man was talking about.

"I... Guess," he said after a moment. He furrowed his brows a litte bit, though. "How do you mean?"

Wyatt was not prone to speaking in metaphors, though he had been known to use a couple while trying to explain seriously complicated matters. Micah wasn't so much complicated as secretive. He knew he could trust Jude, but he was ashamed for even considering moving forward with his attraction to his fellow agent.

"I just want to know how to kiss in case I find myself in a situation where it becomes a viable course of action. When people are younger and they kiss people of a similar age, inexperience is to be expected. But at my age, I'm going to come across as even more awkward and ridiculous if I go into such a situation without first having some practice."

Jude blinked a few times, a series of blinks, and he just sort of stared at Wyatt as he tried to figure out what the younger man was saying. Asking for kissing advice was one thing, but Wyatt's use of the word practice had Jude considering that... Well, Wyatt wanted to practice. Wyatt wouldn't have used the word practice if he hadn't meant practice.

"Are you asking for advice or for practice?" he asked after a moment.

When Wyatt's angle became clear to Jude, Wyatt couldn't help but squeeze his eyes shut and try to fight the pink that was rising on his cheeks. "I'm--" it was hard to get the words out now that they were down to the truth of the matter. "I'm asking for both."

He opened his eyes and made a sheepish face at Jude. "It's unconventional, I realize."

When Wyatt's cheeks turned pink, Jude's heart went out to him, and Jude's face felt a little flushed as well. He wet his lips and then bit down on the lower one for a moment as he considered what his friend had to say. If it had been anyone else, Jude would have laughed, but he knew that laughing was the absolute wrong thing to do right then... Especially with how serious Wyatt was.

"Unconventional is one word for it," he finally replied. "But, I mean... I can see why you'd want... I mean, I remember how nerve wracking it was for me back then, so now it would be... Even worse, and," he was stuttering, but he just hadn't expected such a thing to come up when he got up for work earlier that morning. "I'll help you."

Jude was right, laughing would have crushed Wyatt. This was a very delicate situation according to him and he did not see the humor in it at all.

When Jude agreed, Wyatt brightened. "Really?" Part of him had expected Jude to say no, but he was relieved when he agreed. "I must assure you that I'm not--how do they say it--trying to get into your pants." Wyatt trying to use vernacular always sounded wrong. "Think of it as a scientific experiment, a purely educational endeavor."

Jude couldn't help but smile. Leave it to Wyatt to smooth over an awkward situation by making Jude want to laugh.

"Hearing you say 'get in your pants' is sort of weird," he said before he nodded his head, going serious once again. "I know. It's fine, no one has to know about it but us," he added as he got up. "Maybe we can go out, talk, just hang out and you can ask questions, and then... You know, practice."

It sounded absolutely ridiculous, but he was serious. He got to his feet and he smoothed his black vest down, and he had to wonder if somehow Mick might hear about this. She had a way of knowing everything.

"I've taken into consideration the amount of popular belief that this sort of physical contact with a friend can ruin or complicate the relationship. But I think we're different in that we can separate ourselves and our friendship from this. But if you think it might risk our friendship then I'd like for you to speak up because practice isn't worth that." Wyatt really did treasure the relationships he had with the team, especially Jude because he was genuinely the first real friend he'd ever had.

Jude smiled softly. Wyatt was so sweet, and terribly innocent in some ways. It was surprising considering some of the very awful things he'd seen, but Jude loved him for it.

"I think we'll be fine," he assured softly as he reached out to squeeze his friend's shoulder. "I've survived a lot of awkward and awful situations when it's come to romance, I think that practicing will be incredibly easy compared to that." Jude had the habit of dating some really not so nice guys, though he was trying to be better about it.

"Practicing what?" Mick asked as she poked her head into the office, and Jude dropped his hand away from Wyatt's shoulder.

"Um, piano," Jude blurted out.

"Piano?" Mick repeated, arching a brow, and she turned her gaze to Wyatt. "You guys know how to play piano?"

"I do," Jude piped in proudly. "And guitar." Music was something he enjoyed on his own at home, though no one on the team really knew that.

The reassurance made him feel better and he relaxed until Mick showed up. He had an impossible time not looking guilty so he stood up and went to the other side of the room to pick up a file folder as if he was continuing their work. It was empty, unfortunately, and he set it back down. "Piano, yes. I was interested in its mathematical components and Jude said it would be easier to understand if I practiced."

For a moment, Mick just stood there, looking puzzled. But, shockingly, she bought the story and shrugge her shoulders a bit in a dismissive manner. Wyatt would say an do something like that, it was totally plausible.

"We're needed," she said after a second, "Micah and Emma just got here, they're all ready waiting with Liam and Beck," she added. "They want you to come too, Jude."

Jude nodded his head and grabbed a fresh notebook and pen before he followed Mick out, and he gave Wyatt a relieved look along the way.

Beckett had been doing some collecting. Files piled up on his desk and as he sorted through them, sometimes strange patterns sifted to the surface. Most of the time, he passed his collections off as tricks of his own mind. He wasn't a profiler, he assessed cases, their politics and their urgency. But these missing persons had caught his eye and when laid out together, he knew that it was something worth bringing Liam's attention to. . Liam had agreed that it was indeed a cohesive set. Beckett was standing in the conference room and when the last three arrived, he launched into his schpeel, this time about why these cases had caught his eye. "They're all from far enough away from each other that none of the PDs have linked them."

When Mick, Jude, and Wyatt came into the room Micah couldn't help but glance at Wyatt with a smile. His attention quickly turned to the task at hand, and he frowned a little bit as Beckett spoke.

"All gay men?" Mick asked quietly, and a frown of her own had formed. "No bodies have ever been foud? They just... Vanished?"

Micah sifted through the file, noticing the dates were the same each year. Except one. "The second victim went missing on December 26th, everyone else on November 26th... That's odd."

"Nothing like a good kidnapping for the holidays," Beckett noted wryly. "I thought the month difference was strange too."

Liam nodded. "We'll probably start there. Deviations from the pattern are often the most useful thing in actually finding the person responsible." He pointed to the list of other things missing with them. "Clothes. Someone who intends on disposing of the victims right away doesn't usually pack their things for them and these other items don't really seem like the first thing a thief would take."

"I can search for similar cases in the surrounding states in November 26th," Jude said as he wrote some things down.

Emma was silent for a moment as she looked over the things that had been taken. Liam was right. Killers didn't pack for their victims. They took trophies, but this was more than that.

"Violin, keyboard, camera, notebooks and laptop?" she said after a moment. "Musicians, photographer, and maybe a writer? Those are all talents, Liam."

Liam nodded thoughtfully at Emma's comment. "Creative talents, yes you're right. How strange." He fell silent for a moment, mulling that over.

Wyatt looked through the pictures. "Similar ages and appearances. Either they represent the unsub himself or they're acting as a surrogate for someone in his life, maybe someone who rejected him or someone he lost. It's exceedingly rare for a kidnapper to keep the victim for so long. I'm surprised we haven't run across the body of at least the first victim. Maybe run his information against the John Does in the area?"

Jude nodded at Wyatt's suggestion and jotted a few more things down.

"There's a gap, 2007 he didn't take anyone? We either missed that case, or for some reason he just didn't find someone he wanted," Micah frowned intensely. Wyatt was right, has the first victim been held against his will for five years? Or had he been killed?

"No bodies as far as we know," Mick said as she glanced up. "That makes me think we're looking for a gay male. Kidnappers who kidnap adults usually do it for sexual preference, and the victims are all gay males. If this was about hatred towards their sexuality, we'd have bodies. He took things, packed for them, this isn't about hatred. He wants them. They all very well might be alive somewhere."

The notion that these men were still alive brought a spark of hope to Liam. It would be nice to rescue someone for a change rather than just finding more bodies.

"Wants them for what? I suppose there's always the sexual motive, the fantasy that these men are really his. He obviously wants them to continue with their talents wherever he takes them."

"Probably sexual, yes. He wants them to be his," Mick said with a frown. "Based upon their age similarity and physical similarity, these are obviously the types that he's attracted to. Slender, sort of pretty, I wonder if they share any personality traits, too?" she suggested.

"The 26th of November, that's a few days from now. He probably has his eye on someone based on the pattern. There was no sign of struggle in any home that the victims were taken from, he has to be subduing them somehow," Emma added.

"The earliest victim was taken in Virginia. If he really is the first, then the unsub is probably based here, but he's smart enough to spread out the kidnappings so as not to create an easily seen pattern." Liam was relieved that they'd be working the case mostly from their offices here, it was nice to go home to Reagan an night. He couldn't help but think of him when he saw the victims. Young, talented, gay men. But if he went down that path he wouldn't be able to concentrate because he'd be thinking about Reagan in danger, and of course he wasn't.

"Are we going to be doing any interviews with the missing's family and friends? Boyfriends?" Micah asked. The states were all surrounding Virginia, so he was inclined to agree with Liam's suggestion that the unsub was from the state. "The investigation for the first case seems... Unfinished, they hardly did anything." He couldn't help but frown at the sloppy and lazy investigation work.

Beckett agreed with Micah about the shoddy police work, though he could understand. It seemed that the victim may have disappeared on his own accord given his history. "With nothing else to go on, I might think it was a runaway too. But there's definitely a lot that was left undone."

"That's where we come in," Liam said. "We should start by collecting information from the families. Jude, you search for any other cases we might be missing."

Jude nodded his head and got to his feet so that he could squeeze past Beckett and go and get to work. Even though he was focused on the task at hand, he couldn't help but notice just how good the other man smelled and he smiled shyly before he slipped out of the room.

"Should we issue any sort of a statement?" Mick asked in concern. "Let people know to be careful since the 26th is coming up pretty fast?"

He was a difficult one to distract, but Beckett always did notice Jude and he glanced after him before being pulled back toward Mick. This was his area of expertise. "It might scare him off, send him somewhere we can't find him, but it would probably be worth it to send a few notices around the surrounding states. Let people know there's a connection. It might even bring other evidence to light, if people saw something and didn't report it, not thinking it was impotant."

Liam nodded in agreement. "He's well organized. I don't think this will throw him off his game, not after how much experience he's had at this point."

Micah sifted through each file, and he couldn't help but hope that maybe they would find the young men alive, even when he knew that might not happen. They had to try.

"What would you like us to do?" he asked as he looked up at Liam. "Should we go in person to interview families and friends?" In Micah's opinion, given their profession, in person was always better and he was certain that Liam was on the same page.

Micah had been an excellent addition to the team and Liam had clearly accepted him quickly. "Yes, in person is best and we'll go to them. It might give us a chance to better understand the scenes of the crime as well. Agent Bishop, why don't you take someone with you and talk to the young man who didn't get taken. We should rule out or confim a connection right away. He could have some valuable information to point us in the right direction." Liam had purposefully not named an agent, wanting to see who Micah selected.

Micah nodded his head and sifted through to the file of the case that Liam was indicating. He noticed the date of November 26th, 2005, a month before Elijah Hunter had been taken.

"This incident happened a month before Elijah Hunter was taken, same state. Maybe this kid was the unsubs intended victim, but when that fell through he found another."

"Explains the deviation from the pattern," Mick agreed.

"Wyatt? You wanna go with me?" Micah asked as he glanced over at the younger man.

As soon as Liam had indicated Micah would have to choose, Wyatt tensed up a little. He wanted to go with him, but he was afraid that perhaps it would be a tip off that something was going on. But nothing was going on, he reassured himself. He looked up from the files. "Sure thing," he said quietly and Beckett certainly picked up on the wavering voice. Hmpf.

"Good. Beckett, you work on the press statement. Mick and Emma, start with the most recent case. And I'll talk to the first case. It seems there's a boyfriend that's been contacting the PD for awhile. He'll certainly be eager to help."

"You got it," Mick said as she got up along with Emma. "I'm sure your wife will enjoy having you stay in state," she added with a smile at Liam. Everyone assumed that Liam was straight and married to a woman because he was so traditional, and he had never once corrected them on it. Reagan's name was easy to assign a child of either gender, so they naturally assumed that he was a woman.

"We'll keep you posted," Emma said as she gathered her things up.

Micah got up as well, and he nodded at both Liam and Beckett bedew he slipped out of the room with Wyatt.

Liam's expression didn't change at that and he nodded with a placid smile. "I'm sure Reagan will be pleased with it. It's a nice change." He didn't like lying, so he never assigned pronouns or said much on it at all. He was a private person, keeping work and homelife separate. Plus, if higher ups didn't find out about his sexuality--well that was just fine with him.

Both Beckett and Wyatt went on to accomplish their individual tasks.
