He was not expecting to hear another voice. The lighting was very dim and he was so focused on himself that it never occurred to him that there might be other people around. His first instinct was to attack this other person and he could feel his muscles coiling as he got ready to lunge. The guy who was talking to him was on the other side of the cage--that must mean he was free, right? Fortunately, his brain was able to kick in and override his adrenaline fueled fight mechanism and tell him that this boy was in a cage too, just a separate one.
Sucking in a deep breath, he let go of the fence and put his hands over his face. He wasn't going to cry, even though he felt like it. He was just trying to assess the situation. After a moment, he kicked the fence, making it rattle again. His hands lurched out to grab hold of what he assumed was the door and he tried to yank it open, all to no avail. When he was done raging against the fence, he finally had to collapse on the floor from exhaustion. His body hadn't been ready for that kind of strain just yet. "Is he going to kill us?" Shay said finally, voice scratchy from how dry his throat was.
