open to Shay
Parker and Murphy were sound asleep, Elijah could tell. The sound of their breathing always let him know if they were awake or asleep. Parker had fallen asleep before Murphy had, and he'd been out for two hours now. Murphy for an hour. Everything in the house was silent. Though they were downstairs and a bit away from the house, Elijah could hear Adam's footsteps sometimes. If Adam was home, he usually had one of the three upstairs with him, too. The moment he heard footsteps he sat up on his bed and scooted to the edge, waiting to hear if Adam would come downstairs or not. It made him feel sick to his stomach that he often wanted to be the one Adam chose to take upstairs. It was the only time he was out of the cage, and his only sense of freedom, even if it wasn't real freedom at all.

Adam had been preparing for Shay in a slightly different way than he had for the other boys. He'd had a plan in the beginning for his first boy to be vulnerable somehow. Parker's depression made him an easier mark. After that, Adam had assumed he would be able to handle someone stronger, but that wasn't the case. His botched attempt with Casey had shaken his confidence and he'd found other boys, boys he could handle and boys he could really save.

But Shay was a different animal all together and Adam had been nervous that something bad would happen. It had, however, gone off without a hitch and he was carrying Shay down the stairs, slung over his shoulder. He noticed that Elijah was awake and he spoke to him in a hushed voice as he put Shay into the cage next to him. "He's tall. So tall, Elijah. And he's a photographer. I wish you could see his work; it's lovely. Maybe he'll take pictures of all of you."

Elijah's heart sank. Adam had been talking about a photographer, but Elijah had been hoping that no one would get taken. He'd hoped the same for Murphy, too. But despite his hopes, someone new was now stuck in the dark basement with the rest of them.

"Is he okay?" Elijah asked softly as he got to his feet and went over to the fence to hook his fingers against the chainlink. He wet his lips and tried to listen to the new boy's breathing, trying to assess if it was labored or not.

Elijah's concern was always so sweet. Murphy and Elijah were his sweet ones and he loved them dearly. Parker was not sweet, and Adam suspected that Shay would not be so nice either. He liked both kinds and he was pleased to have a balance again. "Yes, of course he's okay," Adam said gently. He was clearly very satisfied and it could have been from the fact that this had been a success or from the fact that Adam had spent some time with Shay upstairs before he'd brought him down to the basement.

The bed was pushed up against the fence and when Adam set Shay down onto it, his body rolled toward the chain link and made it rattle softly. Adam stood up to survey the resting body. "He'll come around in a little while."

Elijah blinked rapidly, and he could only imagine the things the boy had endured upstairs. He had no idea of what kind of person this boy was, but he had a feeling he was stronger than himself or Murphy. He was probably more like Parker. Lijah wasn't sure why he felt that way, but he did.

"Okay," he said quietly before he went to sit on the edge of his bed. The two beds were up against the same chainlink fence, something Adam had done days ago. It had been a sign that he was bringing someone new. He probably wanted Shay to have someone to talk to, someone to explain things to him. The unspoken rules, so to speak.

Adam stood there for awhile, monitoring Shay's breathing. He'd had to drug him again in the middle of their time together because as soon as Shay could fight, he had. His long limbs were difficult to wrangle and Adam didn't like it when they struggled. Shay had been mostly conscious for everything, but his limbs had been unable to do him much good once the drug kicked in. Eventually, he'd had no choice but to give up and pass out.

When Adam finally went upstairs, it was a good twenty minutes before Shay stirred. He went from asleep to awake in a matter of seconds and he sat up immediately, trying to stand. Unfortunately, his legs weren't quite as awake as he was and he took a tumble straight to the ground. Trying desperately to get back up again, he nearly threw himself into a panic. He scrambled all the way to the other side of the cell and drug himself upright by climbing the fence and hanging onto it until his feet started to work again. He looked like a wild animal that had been caught in a trap, frantic.

When Adam left, Elijah sat still and just listened to the sound of everyone's breathing around them. Parker's was nearly silent, you had to really listen to hear him, but Elijah's hearing was sharper than most so he always heard him. Murphy's had a bit of a wheeze to it, and Shay's was just shallow. It wouldn't always be that way, Elijah knew. Once the drug wore off, and he slept normally, he wondered what Shay would sound like.

The moment the other boy startled awake, Elijah stood up and wished he could be in the other cage with him to help calm him down. He couldn't see Shay, but he could tell that the boy was in a panic.

"It's okay," he said softly as he went to the fence and let his fingers hook around it. "I mean... It's not okay, not really, but he's not here right now."

He was not expecting to hear another voice. The lighting was very dim and he was so focused on himself that it never occurred to him that there might be other people around. His first instinct was to attack this other person and he could feel his muscles coiling as he got ready to lunge. The guy who was talking to him was on the other side of the cage--that must mean he was free, right? Fortunately, his brain was able to kick in and override his adrenaline fueled fight mechanism and tell him that this boy was in a cage too, just a separate one.

Sucking in a deep breath, he let go of the fence and put his hands over his face. He wasn't going to cry, even though he felt like it. He was just trying to assess the situation. After a moment, he kicked the fence, making it rattle again. His hands lurched out to grab hold of what he assumed was the door and he tried to yank it open, all to no avail. When he was done raging against the fence, he finally had to collapse on the floor from exhaustion. His body hadn't been ready for that kind of strain just yet. "Is he going to kill us?" Shay said finally, voice scratchy from how dry his throat was.

When Shay didn't say anything in return, Elijah went silent and just tried to listen. The sudden noise of the fence being kicked made him jump, and when Shay started to try to pry the door of the cage open Elijah frowned and furrowed his brow. He could hear Parker grumbling and he assumed Murphy had his headphones on.

"You're going to wake the others if you're not careful," he said softly, and when Shay finally sat down, Elijah sat down, too. "No. He just wants to keep us."

He finally caught his breath and rubbed his hands over his knees as he hitched them to his chest. For a moment, he was silent and then he looked up and scooted closer to the fence on Elijah's side. He wanted to see him and when the dim light caught the boy's face, Shay stared at it for a moment. He noticed that he couldn't catch the boy's glance and it didn't feel as if it was just because he might be shy.

"Keep us? Others? What the fuck is going on?"

Elijah could tell that Shay was looking at him, he could just feel it, and he wished he could see the other boy's face. He liked the sound of Shay's voice.

"He says he's keeping us safe," Elijah said as he crossed his legs so that he was sitting indian style. "We all have talents, and he says that he has to keep us safe. From what, I don't really know. I'm Elijah. I play the violin. There's Parker, he's a writer, and Murphy is a pianist. What's your name? He said that you're a photographer."

Three others. This psycho had been a busy guy. His first assumption was that they'd all been taken near to the same time, but Elijah wasn't acting like someone who was new to this. At first, he ignored the question about his name. "How do you know he won't kill us when he wants? He's probably just saying whatever he thinks will keep you all calm." You all. He hadn't accepted that he was a part of them now. He didn't want to make friends, didn't want to admit that he was in the same boat as those three other people.

"I've been here for three years, Parker's been here for four, Murphy for two," Elijah answered as he traced his fingertip along the edge of the rug ontop of the concrete floor. "He thinks he loves us, and he thinks he's protecting us. He's... crazy," Lijah said very quietly. "The others tried to run, but they say there's just woods out there. I can't see so, I haven't ever tried to run." He was almost ashamed to admit that, but it was the truth.

Swallowing hard at the information, Shay squeezed his eyes shut so hard that it hurt. This was probably a nightmare, punishment for that photo shoot where everyone was tied up and gagged. It had been a concept piece, but maybe it had affected his dreams.

"You can't see?" he finally said, looking up at Elijah. "That's really fucked up--he took a blind kid?" For some reason, Shay thought that should be some sort of unspoken law amongst psycho killers/kidnappers: lay off the handicapped. "What kind of asshole does that?" He leaned back against the foot of his bed, still on the floor. "How did they try to run? Maybe I'm stronger than them. I can run for hours and I've got long legs. If I just run in one damn direction, I'll get out of the woods. Then I can bring back help." He was already formulating a plan.

"I don't know how they ran, I think they just... Went out the back door and ran," Elijah said softly as he scooted a little closer to the fence. "They both said there's nothing out there except woods. He found them both and brought them back. If you get out, be careful. But you won't be able to bring help back for us because we'll be gone. He'll take us somewhere else." Elijah was sure of it. "He hasn't brought your stuff down yet, I just heard him bring you. He packs things for us. Clothes and he probably took your camera and laptop."

"You're so fucking calm!" He said sharply. "How are you so fucking calm?" He didn't realize that after three years of this, Elijah was probably tired of freaking out all the time. Maybe in three years, Shay would understand the sort of acceptance that came along with this situation.

He leaned his head against the cold metal of the fence and sighed. He was so tired again, the drugs still lingering in his muscles, sapping their strength. "He's coming back then. What does he do to you? Does he fuck you? Are we just some sick toys to him? He loves us. That's great." Shay rubbed his hand over his face, trying to forget what happened before.

Elijah wanted nothing more than to help Shay, but he really didn't know how. He was resigned to this life after three years of knowing nothing else. No one had ever come close to finding them. No one but Adam and themselves ever stepped foot inside the house. It was easy for Elijah's hope to fade, especially given the abuse he'd suffered before at the hands of his stepfather. In many ways, Lijah was the perfect victim for Adam.

With a sigh, Elijah lifted a hand to touch the fence, and he was surprised when his fingertips graze skin. He paused, allowing his fingertips to just brush against the side of Shay's face. The boy's skin was warm, and soft.

"He does, yes," he said quietly. He wasn't going to lie. "And I don't really know what we are to him. I'm sorry that this happened to you."

Even though the touch surprised him, he didn't pull away from it. Opening his eyes, he reached out to touch Elijah's arm which was close to the fence. Just his fingertips could reach, but it was kind of nice and he felt the urge to comfort Elijah as well. "Well, it happened to you too," he pointed out.

After a moment of silence, he frowned and shifted uncomfortably. "I really don't want to have sex with him again. I mean--I'm a huge slut, but I like to choose." It was sort of a joke, but it fell pretty flat because he felt so hopeless and sick.

"I've only been with him and one other person," Elijah said quietly. The other person had been his stepfather, but he really didn't feel up to admitting that. He'd never admitted it to anyone, not ever, not even Parker. Parker knew about how physically abusive his stepfather had been, and how controlling, but Elijah had never let him in on the sexual abuse. He was too embarrassed, and thinking about it made him feel sick. He swallowed hard and leaned his head against the fence. "And the other person I didn't really want to be with, either," he added, though he wasn't sure why. There was something about Shay's voice that made the words come out, even if it wasn't everything.

He was going to ask who, but as soon as Elijah admitted that that experience hadn't been by choice either, he thought better about prying into it. He was curious though. "When you get out, the first thing you should do is go to a bar and pick someone you want." It was a little vulgar, but Shay thought maybe it would be empowering. "I'm pretty sure you could have anyone with the way you look. Guy, girl, anything in between." He pulled his hand back, thinking it might be rude to touch him while he said something like that.

Elijah laughed a little shyly, and he shook his head. He simply couldn't imagine ever doing something like that. "I can't... I don't think I could ever be that brave," he said as he settled more comfortably on the floor. "I don't even know what I look like," he said with a little shrug. He didn't mind that so much, though. He'd never known, and while it was strange to try and think about, he never felt sorry for himself over his handicap.

"Doesn't matter that you don't know what you look like; you still look it." He was kind of turning on the charm and he felt himself smile like he was trying to pick up on Elijah at some party somewhere. But he pulled back as soon as he realized he was doing it. "Wow, Shay, that's great, hit on someone in the basement of hell," he spoke to himself out loud and got to his feet so he could sit up on the bed. "Sorry."

Elijah felt his face flush, and his heart did a little skip that he'd never really felt before. He instantly felt guilty over it, like he shouldn't even be thinking of anything remotely happy when they were both stuck where they were.

"It's all right, it made me smile for a minute," he said as he moved to get up onto his bed, and he laid down on his side so that he was facing Shay's side of the fence. "You never told me your name."

Their beds were right next to each other and Shay was kind of happy about that. It made him feel not so alone. Squinting, he tried to see the two others that Elijah had talked about, but he couldn't get a very good look from his position. "I'm Shay," he finally answered Elijah's question about his name. "And yeah, I'm a photographer. I guess I'm glad he brought my camera, if he did." There was something safe about seeing things from behind a lens and it would be comforting to have it with him.

Elijah curled his legs up a little and tucked an arm beneath a pillow as he listened to Shay's voice. He had a feeling that he was going to grow very attached to this one, maybe even more so than Parker and that was saying a lot.

"It's nice to meet you, even though the circumstances aren't exactly the best," Elijah offered. "I can't believe it's been three years all ready."

"You say he'll move you if one of us escapes, but it seems like he put a lot of work into this place. I'll bet he couldn't move you very fast." Shay was still planning for his escape and just as much for a grand rescue. At this point, he really believed he could do it and he found himself wanting to save this kid across from him. He wanted to be the hero. "It won't be another three years," he said with conviction.

Elijah knew better, but he just couldn't bring himself to squash Shay's hope. Parker would have no problem doing it, he knew, and he wished that he could keep that from Shay but he had no control of what Parker said. Parker never meant to hurt anyone, he simply just didn't see the point of hoping when there was no hope.

"He said you're very tall," Elijah said after a moment. "You must be taller than me, then."

Shay nodded before he realized that was a pointless form of communication with Elijah. "Yes, I'm pretty sure I'm taller than you. What else did he say about me? Did he say I managed to sock him in the face? He's going to have a shiner." Which pleased him to no end.

"Have you always been blind?" Shay didn't mince words too often, but he wasn't nearly so hostile about it as Parker could be. He didn't have the kind of past that Parker had.

"No," Elijah answered, and he smiled faintly. "He didn't tell me that." But judging by how hard Shay fought against the door of the fence, Elijah wasn't at all surprised to hear it. "And yes, I was born this way. The doctor's could never really figure out why. It's not so bad, though. I always get to know people for who they are and nothing else, and that's nice. And I've never had to see his face," he added, meaning Adam.

"But some people are pretty to look at. Faces are--" he didn't know if it was cruel to talk like that and so he trailed off, keeping his eyes and mind for photography out of this. "It's not--" a bad face, Shay was going to say, but he snapped his mouth shut when the door opened back up and Adam came down the stairs hauling Shay's things.

He'd been mustering up the strength to battled with Shay again. He was sure it was going to be a struggle just getting his things into his cell. Adam looked over at Elijah. "I see you two have met."

"I know," Elijah said. Murphy had told him that Adam wasn't at all unpleasant to look at, and Elijah wasn't sure how he felt hearing that. "I'd like to see your face," he added, but when he heard the door to the basement open up he moved to sit up.

He wasn't sure what was going to happen, if Shay was going to try and fight or not, and it was one of those rare moments he desperately wished he could see. Wishing would get him no where, though, and he just sort of nodded a little bit in response to Adam's words.

Even if it hurt Adam's feelings every time one of the boys fought him, he still got an adrenaline rush from the challenge. "Want to come upstairs with me tonight, Elijah, or would you rather stay down here with Shay?" It was not a loaded question, despite what it may have sounded like.

Shay wasn't moving as Adam worked the combination to the lock on his door. He was biding his time, waiting for Adam to open the door fully and come inside. If he could escape now, maybe he could get the others out as well. He didn't think far enough in advance to realize he wouldn't know the combinations to their locks.

Elijah hated when Adam asked him questions like that. Adam liked to think that the boys wanted to be with him, and whenever a choice was put in front of Elijah he felt like he had to choose Adam. It was how he'd gotten by the past three years without too much physical abuse on the man's part. Adam wouldn't lash out unless you pushed him, and Elijah rarely pushed him. This, of course, granted him some reprieve. Saying no tonight might be just fine because Elijah rarely ever did so.

"If you'd like me to come with you, I will," he opted to answer. It was easier that way.

Shay was too busy preparing for Adam's entrance to really take in the interaction between the two of them, but he did notice Elijah's word choice was pretty neutral.

"That isn't what I asked." Adam was going to force a choice tonight. With the final twist, he unlatched the lock and opened the gate, pushing Shay's stuff into the cell. With a ferocious growl, Shay leaped to his feet. While he was less graceful than normal, he managed to throw his body against Adam's with a good amount of force, knocking him back.

"I'll go with you," Elijah said quietly, recognizing the tone in which Adam spoke. He didn't want to take any chances.

Before Adam could respond, though, he heard a commotion and he frowned as he got to his feet and went towards the front of the cage to curl his hands around the chainlink. He furrowed his brow in concern and tried his best to listen to figure out who was having what done to them.

"What's going on?!" he asked, his voice rising in pitch.

Shay felt guilty for causing Elijah stress; he could hear it in his voice, the serious concern. But he tried to focus on beating the shit out of his assailant. He landed a few more good punches before Adam got the better of him and slammed him down into the floor. The sounds were all muffled, strange how quiet such a struggle could be.

"It's all right, Elijah," Adam said breathlessly as he forced his leg between Shay's legs and forcing his hand down on the boy's throat. Choked sounds came from Shay as he kept fighting, crushing his own windpipe as he tried to force himself up from the floor.

Elijah wasn't use to hearing those noises. Murphy never fought so hard, not even in the beginning, and while Parker had fought like hell, Elijah hadn't been around then. And whenever Adam took the two of them up, Parker didn't provoke the man, probably for Lijah's sake. To hear Shay gasping and choking like that terrified him, and he shook the cage a little.

"Stop, stop, please just stop," he begged, not entirely sure who he was begging. Was he asking Adam to stop hurting Shay, or asking Shay to stop struggling? It was hard to say.

At this point, Shay could hardly hear anything but the blood rushing in his head. Before he could give up the fight, Adam leaned down and kissed the corner of his mouth softly. Shay thought for sure he would die there on that floor and things went black around him. The sounds stopped and Adam stood up, heaving for breath. Closing the cage door with a clank, he left Shay on the ground to recover in his own time.

"Come on," he whispered to Elijah, encouraging him to come out of his cell once he'd opened the door. He needed something soft and sweet after that battle.

Elijah had never been more terrified for someone else in his entire life. He thought he knew all of the things Adam was capable of, but now he wasn't so sure. He swallowed hard and blinked back a rush of tears before he stepped forward to slip out of the cage, and he felt around for Adam's arm.

"Is he gonna be okay?" he asked softly. "Are you okay?" he added, not wanting to risk Adam thinking he only cared about the well being of the new boy.

Adam thought Elijah's concern was very endearing both toward himself and Shay. He tugged him close and kissed the top of his head with such tenderness that it seemed almost impossible that moments before he was choking someone to the point of losing consciousness. "He'll be fine. He just needs a stronger hand than you do. He'll understand eventually," Adam murmured against Elijah's hair.

He slipped their hands together and led him up the stairs with the utmost care. Adam needed to sleep and he led Elijah into the bedroom, a familiar path.

Elijah turned his head back towards the cages as Adam led him up the stairs, and he wished he could know for certain that Shay was all right. He let Adam lead him though he knew the way by heart, and once they were in Adam's room he moved up to crawl onto the bed. He settled, though he was trembling slightly. The bed was exceptionally messy from his previous romp with Shay. The sheets were wadded up, twisted from the way Adam had used him, and now he was climbing into bed with Elijah. It didn't seem wrong to him at all.

Elijah didn't want to let Adam comfort him, but he needed some sort of comfort and Adam was good at it. The man could be very charming when he wanted to be, and he was often so with Lijah. He let Adam hold onto him, and he sniffled a little bit.

He asked after a moment, wondering if Elijah had gotten any impressions from him in the time that he'd been awake. He would never admit to pitting the boys against each other, but he did realize that having more than one was often a good way of keeping them in line. It gave him bargaining chips, and everyone felt better when they had a family.

"I don't know," Elijah lied. If Shay was going to try and run, Elijah wanted him to have every advantage. "He didn't say much, he was kind of out of it. Confused. He was mostly worried that you planned on killing him. I told him you wouldn't." That was true, so he wasn't lying entirely.

Adam believed him because he had no reason not to believe Elijah. The boy was an angel as far as he was concerned. Feeling the weight of exertion hit his muscles, he exhaled a long breath, realizing just how exhausted he was.

"Help him adjust," he requested kindly as his eyes began to droop and he laid his head back against his pillow. After a moment, he kicked off his shoes and let them drop over the foot of the bed onto the floor.

Elijah had to arrange the covers, and he was well aware of what had probably happened in the bed with Shay. He rolled onto his side, so that he was facing Adam, and tucked an arm beneath a pillow. It smelled like Adam, and a little like someone else, and Lijah knew it must have been Shay. He turned his head and pressed his face in against the pillow for a moment before he relaxed again with a sigh. He could tell by Adam's breaths that the man was going to fall asleep soon, and he leaned over to kiss his cheek out of habit.

"Goodnight," he mumbled softly.
