To the Twin
Scott was perpetually bored. It was 1965 and the world was changing, but his family was staying staunchly the same. A month after Black Tuesday in November, Scott found himself wishing something else mildly exciting would happen to them. During the blackout, they'd been driven past some looting on their way home that day and Scott had pressed himself to the window of the car, wishing for just a moment that the panicked crowds would rush the car and pack him and his brother away to God knew what horrible but exciting fate. Staring into the mirror, half-assedly adjusting his bow tie, he looked past his own reflection and caught sight of his brother who, at first glance, could have been a carbon copy in his own tuxedo. Upon further investigation, it was clear that his brother was lighter haired than he was, eyes brighter, wider as well.

"If I have to sit through another one of Father's dinners out on the town I'm going to vomit. Let's pretend that we're sick, or something. God, anything but Mrs. Lindley's pimply daughter hitting on me." They always ate at the finest restaurants with the worst company. But that's what you got when you were considered one of New York's foremost families. All of the other socialites led lives just as cushy, just as fucking boring, but all of them seemed suited to it. Scott had never liked the social responsibilities that had come with his money, though he had never turned down the fine things he possessed because of his father's financial security.

"I think she wants you to marry her, not fuck her," Tristan said back with a faint smirk, though really, he felt for his brother. Thankfully no one had taken an interest in him the way that Elizabeth had in Scott. Oddly, Tristan hadn't yet met a girl that he felt attracted to. He saw plenty of men, but he never even so much as uttered a word about that, not even to Scott. He was certain that Scott somewhat knew, anyhow. As they took their seats, he gently released Scott's hand and lowered his gaze down to the menu. Why they even bothered to bring it was silly, he always got the same thing.

"I probably will end up marrying her," he said under his breath and with great contempt. "But I'll cheat on her." As if that would make being bound to her better. Scott liked girls--the type he saw in magazines at newstands. The kinds of magazines that came wrapped in brown paper at the backs of seedy stores with their smeared lipstick and gawdy faces.

He watched his brother look at the menu before he just ordered for the both of them. People loved that, as if Scott was reading his twin's mind. None of them bothered to notice that Tristan always ordered the exact same thing. After the waiter left was when Scott glanced at the other busy table and saw she shock of white blonde hair. "That's Andy fucking Warhol," he said with surprise.

Tristan held a quiet laugh back at his brother's words. The idea of Scott actually marrying Elizabeth was absolutely absurd, then again, if their father had his way that would be exactly what happened. He sat back the moment Scott ordered for him, and he lifted a hand to brush his hair out of his eyes. He was just about to drift off into his own little world when he heard Scott say the name Andy Warhol he furrowed his brow and craned his neck so that he could see.

"Really? Where?" he asked just as his gaze settled on the famous artist. He blinked, his lips parting in surprise.

Scott made no qualms about pointing, rather obviously, at the man he'd spotted in the midst of all of his hangers-on. He'd only just 'retired' from painting that year and had promised to focus more on film. Scott had managed to go the premier of Poor Little Rich Girl double billed with Vinyl and had fallen head over heels in love with Edie Sedgwick. He had a clipping from her appearance in the NY Post taped to the side of his dresser. Frowning when he didn't see her among the crowd, he sat back in his seat a little.

The rest of their party didn't seem impressed and Scott was comforted by the fact that at least Tristan had seemed interested and excited about the celebrity sighting. He could always count on Tristan to make him feel better. When their food came, the waiter passed a discreet note into Scott's hand. Glancing at his brother, he showed it to him under the table, his heart picking up a little. This was out of the ordinary and thus thrilling to him. He made sure their father didn't see it as he opened it.

"It's rude to point. PS Your brother is gorgeous. - Andy"

Tristan blinked, completely shocked. Sure, he'd seen some famous people before. But they'd all been so... dull and boring. Andy Warhol was anything but dull and boring. Every now and then he'd throw a curious glance the man's way, but by the time their food came, he'd resigned to sipping at his water quietly.

When Scott nudged him to look at the note, Tristan gave him an odd look, but glanced down to read the words. His eyes widened in a look of sheer surprise, and it was difficult not to let his head shoot right up to look in the famous artist/film maker's direction. Andy Warhol thought that he was gorgeous? That was both exciting and nerve wracking all at once.

"Oh my God," he said softly to Scott, "What should we do?!" Because he felt like they had to do something.

Normally the risk taker and the initiator in their little duo, Scott sat frozen, dumbfounded by the note. This felt like a huge opportunity to explode away from the colorless existence he'd been living, but now that the opportunity to do something about it had presented itself, all Scott could do was fold the note and stick it into his pocket. How quickly his bravado could be silenced by someone whose opinion he actually cared about. He felt suddenly worthless.

When the boys didn't react as he'd hoped, Warhol normally would have written them off as meaningless little squares. But they were twins and Andy just loved twins. He stood up, not bothering to excuse himself from his guests, and walked over to their table. Putting his hands on their mother's shoulders, he kneaded his fingers into her and leaned down in an overly friendly way. "These must be yours, correct? You do excellent work. I just love them." The woman's eyes went a bit wide and she couldn't find the words to reply back. Scott's eyes mimicked his mother's, but they were wide with gleeful surprise rather than horror.

Tristan frowned a little when Scott didn't answer him and put the note away. He looked at his brother expectingly, but when it became obvious that his brother wasn't going to do anything Tristan glanced at Andy anxiously. He went back to his dinner and was quiet, not bothering to pay attention to the mundane conversation about politics and dinner parties. When Andy came over, he looked up at him in surprise, his mouth forming in an O.

Francis looked just as shocked as his wife, and for a moment he didn't know what to say, which was rare. "Thank you for the compliment, now if you don't mind, we're having dinner."

"I don't mind at all. We're in a restaurant," he said, disregarding the man's not so subtle hint to leave. The other people at the table were clearly uncomfortable, but he relied on their politeness not to tell him to leave outright. He loved the dance of manners. Walking over to kneel down between the boys. "Come visit me."

Scott was elated at how Warhol completely ignored everyone that didn't matter. He stared as Andy took Tristan's hand and removed a pen from his pocket. He scrawled the address of the flat known as the Factory on Tristan's skin and then stood up. He gestured to Scott with his head. "Bring your brother, won't you?" Scott frowned. No one ever treated him like the 'extra.' It pissed him off and the way Andy looked at him, it felt like the man knew that.

Their father's eyes narrowed and he pursed his lips together in obvious annoyance, but he didn't say anything. When Andy came over to Tristan, the boy blinked in surprise and his mouth dropped open a little. He blinked rapidly, his cheeks flushing a nice shade of pink. His mouth felt dry and he just stared down at his hand as Andy Warhol wrote down his address. When the man was finished, Tristan's gaze flickered to Scott, then back to Andy.

"I don't go anywhere without him," he said quietly.

He felt an overwhelming rush of jealousy, but he didn't know where it was directed. Was he jealous of the attention Tristan was getting, or of the idea that Tristan might find someone more interesting than him. Andy hardly seemed to care, that was for sure. He swept his 'better than' gaze across the table and waved as he went back to his own table.

The twitterpating swell of a brush with celebrity was starting to dissapate from the group, though Scott was still clearly affected. It was almost as if he was angry and that would be the first prick of fury he would feel at the way Andy could manipulate his emotions so easily.

Tristan could tell that Scott wasn't happy, and that made him frown as he watched Andy walk away. He turned his gaze to his twin, then went back to his meal. His father seemed happy that Tristan appeared to be disinterested in Andy even though he was anything but disinterested.

Every now and then, throughout the meal, he'd toss a curious glance Andy's way but they were subtle. They probably weren't suble to Scott, though. After the meal was over, and everyone said their goodbyes, Tristan found himself in the car and anxious to get home so that he and Scott could talk in private.

There was a strange mix of annoyance and excitement boiling in his stomach. The ride home was quiet and he supposed their father could be happy about that. Finally, someone could silence his little black sheep. He most certainly was not playing William Burroughs anymore.

Back in their room, Scott started to get out of his stuffy tie. The way he moved revealed his annoyance. "He's really better looking in photographs. And I think he was really stretching with that self portrait. He probably wants to film you."

Tristan shrugged off his jacket and then started to take off his tie. He glanced over at Scott and gave him an odd look. "I thought you loved Andy," he said quietly as he went to sit on the bed so that he could slip out of his shoes. "I don't think that I would let him film me... It would be too strange. I'm too awkward."

"I do, he's amazing. But it seems like he loves you. When are we going to see him?" Because there was no question that they had to take the man up on his invitation. "And if he wants to film you, you have to let him. It's a huge opportunity." An opportunity for what exactly, Scott couldn't be sure, but it would be a breath of fresh air, even if he was just watching Tristan get thrust into the spotlight. He got up to help his brother with his tie. He liked taking them off. He leaned in to kiss his brother's cheek. "You're not awkward."

Tristan blushed a little bit at the kiss and his brother's words. He found that attention and kind words from Scott meant the most to him.

"Thank you," he said softly, allowing Scott to work his bowtie off. "I just don't think I'd be very good at it... I can barely talk to people, really. You're the only one I can be myself around."

He laughed and shimmied the untied tie back and forth before he tugged it off entirely. "You're so pink," he said fondly. "And you don't have to talk, just lay there and be sexy." He nudged Tristan with his hip before going to flop down on his own bed, kicking off his shoes sloppily. "Maybe he just wants us to hang out. Maybe he wants to have sex with you. I've heard so many stories about that place. God, I can't wait to go."

Tristan's face flushed even more when Scott pointed it out, and it only got worse when his brother mentioned sex. "That's ridiculous," he murmered as he turned to flop down on the bed face first. "I can't be sexy and he does not want to have to have sex with me."

"All human beings can be sexy!" He said with gusto. "Besides, we look just like each other, just go like this." Scott rolled onto his side and hooked his thumb in his black slacks, nudging the waistband down until it revealed his hip bone. He tilted his head back just so and gave his brother bedroom eyes. It was easy when it was with Tristan and it was more of a joke than serious. After a moment, he stuck out his tongue.

He reached for his clipping of Edie and held it close to his face as he went onto his back. "What if he wanted to have sex with you?" He asked.

Tristan couldn't help but sneak a peek at his brother, and at the obvious act of him oozing sex appeal, he wasn't sure how to react. He gave Scott a weird sort of stare before he hid his face again and shook his head.

"Don't be silly," he said quietly. "He does not want to have sex with me. And I wouldn't do... that."

"Trist," Scott started seriously. "Andy Warhol is one of the greatest contemporary minds. How could you not jump at the chance to be in one of his movies or at the least get with him for a few nights? Do you want to be stuck in this monotonous life forever? We'll go tomorrow after school." He said decisively as he pulled a textbook up off the floor; he had some reading to finish up for class.

Tristan furrowed his brow and chewed on his lower lip nervously, a lump forming in the back of his throat as his face grew hot. He didn't know what to say. He hadn't ever indicated his sexuality to anyone outloud, not even Scott, and now he just felt confused. He rolled onto his back and toed his shoes off, allowing them to fall to the floor before he crawled beneath the blankets and burrowed beneath them to hide. He'd let Scott tend to his studies while he thought about his brother's words.
