shay, lijah, adam
As much as Elijah hated to admit it, Adam was always especially sweet during any holiday. He tried to make them as special as he possibly could for all of the boys, and Lijah hated that sometimes he really enjoyed himself. But he supposed he had to take pleasure in the smallest things, or else he'd go crazy. He and Murphy had played a song for Adam, and naturally that had made the man very happy. He'd cooked them a special holiday meal, and spent time with each of his little talented artists. Reagan had been a bit difficult, but when Shay had taken photos of him, he'd been good, mostly because he'd been worried about what might happen to Shay if he wasn't. It was obvious to everyone how much he missed Liam, though. An entire month had nearly gone by with nothing, and though the team was making a lot of progress - especially thanks to Adam's slip up with Vegas - no one held captive knew that.

After Adam had taken Murphy up for photos, he'd taken Parker, and now Elijah was waiting for his turn as he sat on the edge of his bed. He was anxious and nervous, afraid that Adam would see his attraction to Shay, though he supposed that wouldn't be bad. In fact, that would probably only make Adam happy. What Elijah was really worried about was if Adam recognized the feelings that he and Shay had for one another. There was no way of knowing how the man would react. Adam could be very sweet, but he could snap and when that happened, it was never good.

Adam led them both downstairs and put them in their respective cells. There was no way he was going to let them stay together tonight. Afterward, he tromped up the stairs and slammed the door behind him. Shay flinched at the sound. He felt as if they'd made some fatal error and he was afraid. Curling up on his bed, he sighed. "I used to be so much braver but I'm getting so tired of hurting," he said in a small voice.

Elijah put his violin away neatly in it's case, and he went to go pull on a shirt and some socks in silence. When he heard Shay's voice, he frowned and went over to the fence so that he could be as close to him as he could manage.

"You don't have to be brave all of the time," he said softly. "That's asking to much of one person. It's okay to feel tired sometimes, just as long as you don't give up."

He rubbed the heels of his palms hard against his eyes and rolled onto his back so that he could sprawl out. "But I did give up. I should have fought or something, but now I have something at stake. You." Sure, Shay liked all of the other men, but if his smart mouth caused some grief for them he wouldn't be devastated. Likewise, if he got hurt because of something they'd done, he wouldn't hold it against them. Every man for themselves is what it really boiled down to for Shay, not that he'd be completely cold toward them.

But now he really cared. Elijah had made him care not only about Elijah himself, but about the others as well, acting as a doorway to really connecting with the others. It was a sticky situation now; he couldn't just act without thinking about the consequences.

Elijah face fell some, and he furrowed his brow as his hands fell away from the chainlink fence. He felt guilty now, like he'd done something wrong when he knew that he hadn't. He just couldn't help it.

"I'm sorry..." he said softly. He closed his eyes and leaned his head against the fence as he swallowed hard. "It'll be okay. I don't know how, but it will be." It had to be.

When he realized how that might have sounded, Shay winced. "Oh, no. No, I didn't mean it like that, Lijah. I swear. Love is a liability, but that doesn't make it not worth it." In so many words, he'd just told Elijah that he loved him without realizing it. He'd been hesitant to say it outright, uncertain of exactly how the other felt about him or if any of this could even be considered real under the circumstances. But the emotions were there for Shay and he spoke about it without thinking.

Elijah chewed on the inside of his lower lip, and he wished more than anything that they didn't have to constantly be seperated by a goddamn fence. He went to go sit down on his bed and he rubbed at his eyes in frustration.

"I know," he said softly, "I know you didn't mean it like that. I know you care about me just as much as I do you," he added, and his voice grew softer. "I love you, too."

Those words made everything around him go into soft focus, draining the fear and frustration out of him and replacing it with warmth. "You do?" he asked in a thick voice as he turned onto his side toward Elijah. "I wish you were here right now." Because he may as well have been in another country they felt so far away.

"I think you're right. I think things will be okay."

Hearing Shay say those words, and hearing his voice go soft, returned some hope to Elijah and he smiled sadly before he moved to crawl under the covers.

"Lets just sleep for a while," he said softly. "Maybe I'll see you in my dreams." It was silly to say, but he liked the way the words sounded coming out of his mouth.

Shay made a sound in the back of his throat that was nothing but fondness for the other. He tugged his pillow in closer and had to be content with pretending that it was Elijah.

"You will," he laughed a little and closed his eyes.

"One day we'll be able to fall asleep next to eachother, you know. And eat together, and hold hands in movies, and do whatever we want," he added quietly. He was daring to hope, allowing himself to get carried away, because he hated feeling despair constantly. He had to hope sometimes. "And have photoshoots alone." He closed his eyes and let out a little sigh. "Goodnight, Shay."
