OCTOBER 31, 1997
Masquerade Ball

WHO; The majority of the school.
WHEN; October 31, 1997
WHERE; The great hall and the gardens as well as the surrounding areas.
SUMMARY; Our man jack is King of the Pumpkin patch. Everyone hail to the Pumpkin King. This is Halloween. The Masquerade Ball.
RATING; R at the very most.
WARNINGS; The punch has been spiked with an Euphoria-inducing Elixir and a mild Babbling Beverage.
STATUS; In Progress.

The Great Hall was adored with the best that Charity Burbage could muster. Candles that would have usually kept the hall brightly lit were gone and replaced by pumpkins as well as a multitude of small white spheres of light that couldn’t be discerned as anything but stars from a distance. Despite the fact that the ceiling was overcast, nothing would stop the smile that Professor Burbage kept on her face. With a flick of her wand she placed the final touch on the decorations. She lowered a Jack-O-Lantern, on the center of the stage where the weird sisters would play, that was larger than her in her entirety.

With a quick shake to the Headmistress’ shoulders, she gave her yet another smile as she waved off Professor Hagrid who was attempting to bring more pumpkins into the room. They could go in the garden, after all.

“Would you kindly let the students in, Minerva?” the Headmistress shook her head disappointedly. She had been against this whole affair since the idea had popped into Charity’s head. But the simple fact that she was against the whole idea of it didn’t outweigh what her students had been through this past year. It would be for the best, they had earned this and more. Headmistress McGonagall gave a quick nod before heading towards the doors, a small breath, and then she opened them to find a group of masked students already gathered there, their eager faces reminding her why she had agreed to this in the first place.

With an honest smile, she raised her hands and projected her voice as Albus would have done if he were there, “Welcome, students, to the Masquerade Ball.”

Mandy couldn't help but laugh. "Oh, that'd be easy." Grinning over to the girl. "We just stay away from big brutes that grunt. Besides, you know darn well he'd be over at the snack bar stuffing his face anyway." Laughing more Mandy looked back around.

"Good news for us though, they won't be able to recognize us so we won't get made fun of if we dance with someone like Crabbe."

Justin had been left to his own defenses when his date, Susan Bones, had been ushered off by Eloise Midgen to the restroom. It happened relatively fast so the boy wasn't entirely sure if it were just an intentional hair check or something of a more serious nature. He obviously didn’t dwell on it for too long, however. Being one for social gatherings it was no surprise that the Hufflepuff immediately went to find someone else to entertain him. Unfortunately, he too had his fair share of issues recognizing anyone. Though, really, that wasn't much surprise.

The seventh year was guilty of placing an illusion charm on his personal mask. When he wore it Justin's hair was two shades darker brown than it usually was, his jaw was more chiseled and there was a making of a cleft chin. The humours that came of it were worth the hours that went into the damned thing. The idea of changing ones appearance was kind of the entire point of Halloween, really.

As he scanned the crowd he spotted a rather familiar dress that he'd spent his share of time staring at the day before. He'd missed Evelyn in the rush of the common room that evening and it seemed only proper to bombard her with his presence. As he approached he realized she was talking to someone else. For a moment he considered not interrupting, but in the end he couldn't help over hearing the last bit of their conversation.

"Well you know," he offered in casual interruption, "It's likely the chap might have got his hands on a decently charmed mask. I wouldn’t put it past such a poor wretch to pull off a Hogwarts Cinderella story tonight. Anything can happen."

Evelyn turned and immediately jumped when she saw the stranger before her. Something about everybody being in masks was a little creepy to her, and she tried to figure out who he was as he spoke. Though his voice sounded familiar, she didn’t think she remembered seeing anyone with such a finely chiseled jaw roaming the floors. It reminded her a little of the man on the cover of a rather embarrassing romance book she had secretly read in the library several weeks ago.

“Well,” she began, trying to think of what to say. It could very well have been Vincent Crabbe, though she wasn’t sure if he was capable of charming his features to such an extent. Or at all. “I suppose that could be a good or a bad thing. So, are we going to play guess who?”

Justin was amused with the response. He'd not intended it until after the words left him - but giving the assumption that he might very well be Crabbe was laughable. Disturbing, but highly entertaining. Justin wondered absently if he'd be generous and offer the poor slob his mask for part of the evening just to see what it did for the Slytherin's abnormally large head.

A smile fell upon his features both at the thought and the question that had been directed his way. Nodding Justin replied with a very simple, "Yes, I think so." He glanced over at Mandy Brocklehurst and proposed, "Three guesses each?"

The game 'Guess Who' would be ideal for passing the time and it might even entertain for the period in which he was willing to let it carry on. Besides, he'd been curious to know who bits of his fake features reminded others of.
