Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
WHO: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger
WHEN: (11/13/97) Thursday evening, after dinner
WHERE: Gryffindor Common Room
SUMMARY: Hermione helps Ron catch up with classes but he's distracted. And then... the moment we've all been waiting for.
RATING: PG-13?
STATUS: Complete

Ever since the ball, Ron had been having a harder time than usual concentrating in classes and it was Hermione's fault. Well, okay, not intentionally but it was still because of her. Tensions were running high and he was finding it harder and harder to keep his feelings for her a secret. She was becoming a bigger distraction to him than usual lately. He found himself staring at her quite often and wondering if some kind of big, daring, chivalrous act would make up for the fact that he wasn't nearly good enough for her. Just sitting next to her in classes was driving him mad and then he had gotten sick and missed several days and that didn't help him either.

He was glad she had agreed to help him catch up--he probably wouldn't be able to do it without her--but he wondered how on earth he was going to concentrate on schoolwork with everything he was thinking about her floating around in his head.

Grabbing his textbooks, parchment and quills, he took a deep breath and bounded down the dormitory stairs to the common room. Spotting a free couch with a table for their books, he snatched it quickly and sat staring into the fire as he waited for Hermione to arrive.

Though they hadn't allocated a time for their study session, Hermione felt that she was running late as she rushed back from the Library. She had gotten far too immersed in the book she had been reading and lost track of time. Before she had even realised it, dinner was practically over and she and Ron were scheduled to study right afterwards. She made a stop in the Great Hall to get something quick and portable before slowing and heading to Gryffindor, eating the food she had nabbed along the way.

Greeting the Fat Lady, the two conversed for a short moment before the portrait swung open and Hermione stepped inside Gryffindor common room. Her eyes immediately found Ron not too far from the fire and smiled, heading over and sitting next to him.

"Well then, it looks like everything you need is set and here, so we should get started," she said in way of greeting, getting straight to the point.

Ron caught sight of Hermione the moment she stepped through the potrait hole. He always managed to pick her out of a crowd and now, when he was thinking about her constantly and was set to meet her, he'd known it was her the minute he heard the potrait opening. His hands went slightly sweaty and he cursed that fact, wiping them hastily on his trousers. Ever since the ball, he'd been nervous when around Hermione. He felt as if everytime she looked at him she could tell what he was thinking, that she knew how he felt.

"Figured you'd appreciate being able to start right away." He told her, shrugging slightly and breathing slowly to calm his nerves. "I didn't see you in the Great Hall... did you eat something?" He asked, genuinely concerned for her as she was rarely not present at meals.

Hermione had noticed that Ron seemed a lot less at ease around her and had her sneaking suspicions about it (especially after the conversations she had had with Ginny since the ball), but she wasn't able to put paint to any specific reason yet. She wanted to, mind, but didn't want to get her hopes up in case Ginny was mistaken.

Nodding at his question, Hermione reached for one of the books on the table and turned to the page that would be helpful for what he would be working on. "I grabbed something from the Great Hall on my way here. I'm afraid time got away from me while I was in the Library," she said sheepishly.

"Doesn't it usually?" He asked with a lopsided smile, looking over at her in the process. She could spend hours in the library alone. He'd never know what she did for all that time she spent there. She'd probably read through almost all the books the library had.

Grabbing one of his books as well, he placed it on his lap and then reached for a piece of parchment and a quill. He looked over at her while she turned the pages of the book and found that he couldn't stop. He only snapped out of his reverie when the fire crackled loudly bside them, startling him. Blushing slightly, he wrote the date on the top of his parchment.

"So, what's first then?" He asked, already, not even having started studying, unable to concentrate.

Rolling her eyes, Hermione couldn't help but agree with Ron's assessment on how the Library usually distracted her when she meant for it not to. "That's hardly the point," she said matter-of-fact, though there was a smile on her face.

Clearing her throat, she reached up and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear as she searched for the pages she thought she had memorized when she did her Charms work.

"What's first?" she asked, glancing up at him, her eyebrows knitting in confusion. "You mean you haven't even read the assignment?" Before even giving him the chance to answer, she pulled the book in his lap to her and flipped a few more pages to the right one - that had been the one she memorized the page numbers for.

"We're doing shield charms now." Something they were already partially familiar with given everything they had gone through last year. "Before we're even allowed to Practice them, Professor Flitwick wants us to know the properties behind the charm, the incantation, and the wrist movements for it in an essay that's no less than a foot."

When Hermione tucked her hair behind her ear, Ron's eyes were immediately drawn to the movement and he felt the blush come back. He was glad for the heat of the fire and the soft glow of the room because at the moment it was masking the steadily rising colour of his cheeks. God, why did he have to feel the way he did? And why did his face have to betray him every single time?

"A foot?" He groaned, realizing just how behind he was and knowing he hadn't been able to and wasn't going to be able to concentrate fully. "Merlin..." He said, half about the assignment and half about the situation he was in. All the feelings were bubbling up inside him and had been for ages but the ball had turned up the heat and now the feelings were bubbling even more.

Damn Hermione for sitting there, looking beautiful, being nice to him and helping him. If she wasn't so bloody wonderful he wouldn't have this problem.

"Yes, a foot," she replied, handing the book he had originally had back to him. She cleared her throat. Really, he needed to pay attention if he really wanted her help. Looking down at the book, she pointed to a section with her wand, underlining it momentarily with blue lines.

"Do you remember last year when we used the Protego charm?" she asked, highlighting that word in the text for him. "This is exactly the same charm as that only in scientific terms right now. Later, we'll do the actual charm in class once we've learned the underlying methods to it and the history behind it."

Pointing to the text with her finger this time, she tapped his book. "Read this section and the marked section that I'll have in this book and it should be enough to get you started on several inches."

Ron nodded along with everything she was saying, listening to it but not really hearing it. He was horribly distracted by the way her lips moved when she talked and how the firelight was framing her face in this fantastically wonderful way. He really needed to snap out of it! He needed to but he couldn't. He just couldn't. God, why was love so damned hard?

Sighing loudly he took the book she had highlighted for him and brought it closer to his face to begin reading. It was slightly dim in the room so he had to read closely. His eyes roamed over the words on the page but he didn't retain anything he was reading.

He could feel her leg touching his. It was right there and it was warm and everytime she moved, he could feel it. Damnit. Damn it all to hell.

While Ron read the selected material she had prepared for him, Hermione turned her attention back to the book in her lap. Consciously, she was aware of their close proximity and that their legs were touching, but it didn't distract her from what she was doing. Ron needed her help after all and any silly thoughts were a distraction.

Underlining the text that he'd most use in her book, she turned the page and skimmed over it to make sure she wasn't missing any valuable information. Things were quiet; the only noise was the fire next to them and the occasional conversations drifting down from up in the dormitories.

"Thank you for the brownies earlier," she finally said a minute later, breaking the silence. "I'm not sure that they were entirely necessary given that all I'm doing is helping you with your homework, but I appreciate them nonetheless." She gave him a smile and squeezed his arm gently in thanks. Then it was back to the book.

With only the sound of the crackling fire and the turning pages, for the first time that night Ron realized how empty the common room was. There were only three or four other students in there at the moment and they were off in a corner reading and playing chess. This didn't help his concentration issue, however, not at all. Because now he was consciously aware of how alone they were.

After reading the same sentence about twelve times, Ron let out a breath of frustration and looked over at Hermione just as she began to speak. Merlin, she was beautiful. The way her hair curled around her face and the firelight lit up her features. When she thanked him for the brownies, he blushed and nodded, smiling at her slightly and extremely relieved that she'd liked them. "No problem." He said softly.

Then, when she touched his arm and squeezed it, he nearly choked on his own air. Bloody hell. Kill him right there, why didn't she? He went bright red and immediately ducked his head, hiding his face from her gaze. His gaze went back to the book but he merely stared at it, not taking in anything at all.

Right away, Hermione noticed how uncomfortable Ron seemed to be when she touched him. She pulled her hand away slowly, tucking it back in her lap, and frowned. Either she was repulsive and he didn't want her to touch him or it was the same way it was with her - it was unnerving each time he did.

Curling her lips between her teeth, she watched him for a moment before leaning back against the couch and looking at the book in her lap. She gave him several more moments to read and take everything in before she spoke again.

"I think it'll be good for Harry to start the DA again," she said offhandedly. She had been thinking about it all day and was admittedly excited about it. "It'll provide him a necessary distraction and give him a sense of purpose again."

"Yeah," Ron answered when she mentioned the DA. He was looking forward to it as well. "Yeah, it'll be great." He was sincere in his words but he was hardly paying attention to anything but the goosebumps on his arm where she'd just touched him. It had never been this intense before. The feelings, the reactions, the nerves. He didn't know how much longer he could take it.

Turning his attention back to the page on the book, he managed to get through a few sentences but even that weas becoming difficult. He was about to burst. He just wanted to tell her everything but he knew he couldn't. He was terrified of what might happen, could happen, would happen. They were friends. Friends, that was it. He could deal with that.

Couldn't he?

Hermione nodded too, taking note of the sincerity in his voice. She had finished marking the passage for him in the next book and was now sitting back, waiting patiently for him to finish with the first one.

Several minutes passed and though she did have a lot of patience, it was waning already. Why hadn't he at least turned the page and read the information she had marked on that side. "Are you stuck?" she asked finally, wondering just how something she, Ron, and Harry were so familiar with could be difficult for him. "It's really not that hard."

"M'not stuck." He said softly, blushing faintly when she noticed he hadn't done anything for several minutes. Merlin, he really needed to stop letting her distract him. Everything she was doing was mesmerizing him. How was he supposed to handle being so close to her like this and having to read from a textbook at the same time? It wasn't possible.

"Just can't concentrate." He said, not looking at her still. He kept his eyes down on the page but didn't read it. Just stared and thought about how her leg was still touching his and how pretty she looked in the firelight and how she was being so nice to him when he'd done nothing to deserve it. Damn it, Hermione.

What did he mean by he couldn't concentrate? There was hardly anyone in the common room with them and everything he needed to know was sitting right in front of him. It was easy; he could be finished with his essay in an hour or less if he really put his mind to it.

"Oh, honestly, Ron," she sighed, not meaning to sound exasperated by it, but that was how it came out. "Really, it's not that difficult. It's all there in front of you if you'll just concentrate on the task at hand."

"Yes, it is bloody difficult!" He snapped, looking over at her as he slammed the book shut. "It's pretty sodding difficult when you're sitting so close to me looking so damn beautiful!" He blurted out, not being able to take it anymore.

When he realized what he'd said, he instantly turned as red as insanely possible, his ears burning and his cheeks hot. He jumped off the couch as if he'd been burned and stared at her, open mouthed and wide-eyed. He looked at the ground then, feeling more embarrassed than he ever had before in his life.

"I... I mean..." He stuttered, trying to find a way to fix this. But there was none. The damage was done and his secret was out. Taking a deep breath, his hands shaking, he chanced it and looked up at her, his expression entirely shy and nervous.

When he snapped at her, Hermione's shoulders squared subconsciously and she was ready for whatever fight that would have followed. After being friends for as long as they had been and fighting even longer with each other every step of the way, she was used to it and was a natural reaction anytime either of them got upset with the other. But what he said next stunned her to the core, shocking her beyond words. So much so that her mouth fell open slightly and she stared at him in disbelief.

Had he really just said that?

Finally getting a hold of her senses, Hermione closed her mouth and ducked her head, turning just about as red as Ron was. Hiding around her hair for a moment, she tried to make sense of her jumbled thoughts and fully discern what he could have meant by it.

"Ginny was right then," she finally mumbled and shook her head, biting her lip as she glanced up at him shyly, too.

Ron was sure that he was even redder than a tomato at this point. Had he really just blurted that out to her? He was embarrassed beyond belief, scared of what she might do, hopeful this wouldn't lead to heartbreak and insanely nervous all at once. It was a wonder he was still standing. He looked down at his hands which were shaking like mad.

Was it just him or was she nervous as well? Was that a good thing? He wasn't sure what to think at the moment. Actually, he could barely think at all. He'd practically just blurted out his feelings for her right there.

"Er, what?" He asked, not exactly sure what she meant or what she was referring to. "Right about what?"

Hermione shook her head, not entirely sure if Ginny would have appreciated her sharing the things they had talked about in privacy. Now things felt incredibly awkward and she wasn't sure what to do or say at this point.

Closing the book in her lap, she sat it next to her, nervously running her hand over the cover as she thought. Knowing Ron, that was the extent of what he would admit, she knew, even if she tried to push him into saying more. Really, though, that would be as far as he would go for awhile - it was a big step for him and his lack of confidence. Ginny's voice rang in her head; she could hear her egging her own, saying that it was right, that everything on both ends was reciprocated.

Steeling her nerves, Hermione made her decision and without any prelude or any additional thoughts, she stood quickly and glanced at him just as fast. Mind made up, she leaned in and pressed her lips against his softly and chastely before pulling away and ducking her head.

Ron watched Hermione closely, not wanting to move or speak in case something he did would make things worse. He watched her close the book and set it next to her and he watched her sit there for a moment. He watched her stand and move towards him and it was as if he was frozen, feet glued to the floor, hands stuck together in front of him. He didn't know what to do. Was she going to hit him? Smack him for saying such things? Hex him, maybe?

What she actually did, however, would rest on the top of his list of most unexpected things to ever happen to him for the rest of his life. She kissed him. She kissed him. She kissed him. But, before he even had time to react, she was pulling away and looking at the ground..

Quickly, before he lost all his nerve and all of that Gryffindor courage he supposedly had, he reached up and tilted her face up to look at him with his hand under her chin and, without another thought, leaned down and kissed her, this time with more feeling, with more passion, with everything he felt for her ever. His hand slid down and met his other hand as they went to encircle her waist as they kissed.

While she had been the one to initiate things, she hadn't consciously expected Ron to reciprocate things or even take an active part in them. That's why, when he moved to kiss her himself, she was momentarily surprised, too. Though she quickly recovered as he pulled her closer. Her hands moved to rest against his arms and she followed his lead, kissing him back and hardly believing that this was reality and not one of the many daydreams she had had over the years.

It was soft, yet there was an underlying need to it. He was far more experienced than she was, she realised, but it didn't deter her in the slightest. It was Ron, after all, and she almost needed two hands to count how long she had wanted this to happen. So, she followed his pace and gently moved her lips against his, relishing the moment to its fullest.

Kissing Hermione was nothing like he'd imagined it. No, it was better. He could never have imagined something like this or anything close to it. Kissing the girl he loved was the best feeling he'd ever have in his entire life, he decided. There wasn't nothing that would ever compare.

His grip tightened on her waist slightly as he continued to kiss her with all the emotion he possibly could. It was almost as if he thought that if he let go at all, she'd be gone, just another one of his many daydreams. One hand let go of her waist to reach up and cup her cheek lightly, his fingertips just barely grazing her curls. Merlin, this was incredible. She was incredible. How long had he waited for this? Like forever? He could barely believe it was happening... and that she had been the one to start it.

Parting their lips slowly, his hand remained on her cheek, his forehead resting against hers and his eyes still closed. "I love you, Hermione." He said softly, finally opening his eyes to look at her, his voice filled with emotion and all the love he'd felt and kept inside for so long.

When he pulled away, Hermione couldn't quell the disappointment she felt. While she knew that it was completely inappropriate to be showing such public displays of affection in the middle of the common room, especially since she was Head Girl, she still didn't want it to end just yet. Resting her forehead against his, she closed her eyes too and took a breath to calm the butterflies that had found themselves in her stomach.

At his words, she couldn't suppress a small shudder. He had taken so many leaps in a matter of moments. First he had simply complimented her, then returned the kiss she had given him, and now he was professing his love? She had suspected that he had always felt the same way she had, but she had never assumed that it had progressed that far along. Was he being completely serious?

Blinking her eyes open, she looked at him. Luckily, he was easy to read. "I love you, too," she finally answered, knowing that that was what he wanted to hear. Of course she loved him, she always had since their second year. But that was only as friends. Now, things were obviously different.

Ron did nothing short of beam at her when she returned the sentiment. Sure, he'd gone from denying she could ever fancy him back and holding his feelings in to telling her everything he felt for her in a matter of minutes but to him, it was a release and a relief. He'd been holding it in for so long that, after that kiss, it was bursting to get out. And now that he knew she felt the same way, nothing would stop him from saying it over and over until the entire world knew.

Leaning down he kissed her again for a few moments, hugging her tightly to him and then he pulled away and grinned at her, reaching up to tuck a curl behind her ear. "I'm not dreaming, am I?" He asked for good measure, just in case, you know. There was still that small, tiny chance none of this was real.

Hermione was still reeling from all the discoveries they had made and the kisses. They were mesmerizing and left her feeling detached from everything. To prove that he wasn't dreaming, Hermione reached down and lightly pinched his arm.

"No, you're not dreaming," she said softly, because if he was, then she quite obviously was too. And she was rather certain that they were both still very much awake. The hushed whispers of the few students across the common room were indication enough. "I think we've both very much awake."

Ron jumped slightly when she pinched him, clearly not expecting her to do something like that. But he grinned anyhow. He was too happy not to. He'd probably be grinning for days actually. Just sitting in every class, smiling like an idiot. And he didn't care. He'd never been this happy in his entire life.

"This is brilliant." He whispered, looking at her closely as they were standing quite close together. His arms were still around her waist and he'd never let her go if he could. "I never thought you'd... well, I just... you're sure it's me you love? Not some other bloke with red hair?" He was half-joking, teasing in his question, but the doubt behind it was real.

Hermione laughed quietly as he gave a jump when she pinched him, not expecting that reaction out of him either. Looking at him critically, she finally just rolled her eyes again when he started implying that she was in love with someone else completely different.

"Don't be ridiculous," she scolded lightly, though his ridiculousness was part of the reason she liked him so much. It was absolutely maddening at times though. "Of course it's you." It was a moment of clarity; a moment where all the walls had been let down and she was completely unguarded and open - something that rarely happened.

However, once she realised that they could very easily stand there the rest of the night with Ron proclaiming his love for her and sharing a kiss here and there, she ducked away. "You need to finish your essay," she reminded him. "It's due soon." And she was back to her regular self.

Ron's smile widened, if that was even possible, when she reassured him that it was, in fact, him that she loved. He'd never tire of hearing those words from her. Just hearing her say it alone made him feel like he was flying without a broom.

But, when he mentioned his essay and pulled away from him to remind him to complete it, he practically gaped at her, mouth hanging slightly open. "You can't be serious." He said to her, closing the distance so they were standing close again. "After everything that just happened, all the years of tension, the things we just said and did... you want me to sit down and write my essay?" He was in disbelief. He could barely open up a book right now let alone read one and write something about it.

"Hermione, the essay can wait until tomorrow." He told her softly, pleadingly. He just wanted to be there with her right now. Not worry about homework. "This, you, are far more important."

Of course she wanted him to sit down and finish his essay. She was Hermione Granger, after all, and even if they had just confessed their feelings, their schoolwork was still one of the most important things. But she could logically see his point. If his concentration had been barely there before, knowing Ron, it would be completely nonexistent now.

Her reluctance to agree was there and she really wanted to insist that he get it done early; he'd be done with it if he just sat down for an hour and wrote on it. Sighing finally, she nodded. "Fine, but you really have to do it tomorrow, Ron. Otherwise you'll keep putting it off and won't have the time or the motivation to complete it after that." She knew him.

"Deal!" He agreed instantly, grinning broadly at her. He took her hand and pulled her over to the couch, pushing their books and papers out of the way so they could sit comfortably together. He wanted to wrap his arms around her but he wasn't sure how she felt about the whole public affection thing. And he wasn't about to test his boundaries this early in their relationship and after the huge public display of affection that had just taken place.

"Tomorrow after classes I'll get right on it, promise." He said, smiling at her as they sat side by side, only connecting at the hands where Ron was holding hers tightly. He'd never had the nerve to try and touch her like this before, never really had the right, and now that he did, he wasn't letting go.
