There was something about being around Melanie that made him slightly skittish and very calm at the same time. It was a very odd sensation, but really, the moments leading up to seeing her were worse on his nerves than anything, so actually seeing her was nothing but a relief. A withheld breath would be let out, something he would always do, unconsciously of course, and then he would feel calm, because he was near her. Then he would have to worry about talking to her or trying to seem relatively interesting or even breathing. He would have to remind himself of that sometimes, which was rather foolish when he’d think about it, but he wasn’t able to control it, so he’d always try his best to ignore that little flaw. Inhale, exhale. Melanie.
“You have good reflexes, you just didn’t want to stun me. I’m sure. But I’m sorry, you’re right. It’s not very polite.” Charlie gave her what he hoped to be a confident smile, but it was more out of habit than anything. He seemed to smile more around her, and since they started talking again… and dating. “But I wante—” Charlie was cut off by a rough and loud noise; the staircase had begun to move and was already three inches away from him in the moments that he’d frozen from the loud sound. Charlie’s eyes darted from the growing gap to Melanie and shook his head as he took a notable jump over the large gap between the staircase and the landing that he was on, his broomstick still trailing behind him.
“Crap,” noticing that he’d forgotten his bag on the landing, Charlie quickly grabbed his wand and muttered “accio!”—in too much in a rush to deal with a nonverbal spell. There was no mistaking the audible sigh of relief that Charlie gave as the bag floated over, avoiding the three story fall that he could have easily made himself. Motioning his wand to place his bag on the staircase, he rested his hand on the side of the stairs before turning around and facing Melanie, unsure of how to act. He gave her a small smile, hoping that she wouldn’t realize that he could have very easily have fallen trying to get on the staircase, before sliding down to sit.
“…So. Never a dull moment?”
