Who: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger
When: Saturday afternoon
Where: Hospital Wing
Summary: Hermione visits Ron in his time of need
Rating: PG?
Status: Complete

Lying in bed in the hospital wing was no way to spend a Saturday. Of course, Ron hadn't intended on ending up where he was, but unfortunately, the wind had another plan for him. Upon going for his morning fly on the pitch, a gust of wind so powerful and huge knocked him off his broom and he'd fell to the ground, landing on his wrist at a very bad angle. So, he'd broken his wrist and was doomed to an entire Saturday in the hospital wing with the madwoman named Madam Pomfrey.

Hermione mentioned she might visit him though and he'd welcome the change in pace from taking horrid tasting potions every half hour to having something to do and someone to talk to. He waited patiently all morning and afternoon for her, hoping she'd remember.

As she very nearly promised, Hermione did plan to visit Ron in the hospital wing. Originally, she had had a lot of reservations about everyone carrying around and writing in journals that can be seen by everyone who was in possession of one, but upon actually finding the news out through Ron's own handwriting about being hurt as opposed of through the grapevine later, she was willing to put her hesitation aside. Once she had finished writing him, she had sat her journal aside and made her way down to the hospital wing.

Arriving, she noticed Madam Pomfrey wasn't around and it was a pity because she wanted to ask about how bad the break had been and listen to her explain just how long it would take to heal. Walking down the rows of beds, she found the one where he was propped up at.

"You don't look nearly as bad as I had expected," was the first thing she said as she pulled up a chair. Sitting and glancing at his hand and arm, she gave him a sympathetic look. "How do you feel?"

Ron sat up a little straighter when Hermione arrived, having been alone and bored almost all day and extremely glad to see her. She always seemed to brighten his moods at times like this and he needed a lift in spirits. Though it was only his wrist that was injured, the potions he took every half hour were draining on his system. Most of his system was working with the potions, processing them to begin the healing process and so he felt weak and tired.

"Bloody awful." He said softly, his voice not having much strength or volume to it. "Hurts like hell." He said holding up his bandaged wrist and shifting in the bed at the same time. His legs were starting to go numb from lying there all day long.

While he didn't look all that bad, he certainly sounded like it. Either he really was feeling awful, as he said, or was putting on a show to get a bit more sympathy. Frowning, Hermione examined his wrist again, resisting the urge to reach out and touch it and turn it around so she could look at it from each angle.

"Hasn't Madam Pomfrey given you any pain potions to ease the discomfort?" she asked, glancing over her shoulder to where the matron's office was and then turned her attention to the potion vials on his bedside table. Reading each label, she nodded. He was on a bit of pain potion and a similar potion used on Harry when he had his bones regrown. "I think it's going to hurt a bit because the bone is mending itself quickly."

"Think the other potions that I'm taking so frequently are draining me too much for me to actually feel the effects of the pain potion." He said all in one breath and then having to stop and breath. He really was drained and tired. There was no act here. Normally, he might play it up a little for some extra sympathy from Hermione but he'd never had to take so many potions at once. Apparently he'd completely shattered the bone.

Feeling a bit weak, he lay back on his pillows, still slightly propped up but no longer feeling well enough to sit up entirely. " 'M'just tired." He said softly, blinking a few times. "Thanks for coming up though. Been sodding bored all day."

Hermione nodded, understanding. "What exactly happened," she asked, curious to get more of the story out of him than was published in his journal. "I know the wind blew you off your broom, but is that it?" Ron was a pretty decent flier when he had the confidence to be so, and so she found it pretty hard to believe that that was all that had happened. Had he been distracted?

When he thanked her, she gave a small smile and shrugged her shoulders. It really was nothing for her to come; what were friends for? And clearly, that's all that they were. "You're welcome, though, if you're as tired as you say you are, perhaps you should consider getting some sleep?"

Ron shook his head at her suggestion of rest, "It's just the potions." He said and then shrugged in response to her question, thinking back to the morning and what exactly had happened. Yes, he'd been flying and a gust of wind had knocked him off his broom but that wasn't it. There was more too it that he'd never reveal. He'd been very distracted that morning. So many thoughts going through his head about Hermione and the insane guilt he somehow felt, though he didn't know why when Hermione'd never fancy him, for snogging other girls. He'd been so busy thinking about her and the way she had been mad at him when she heard about Linda that he'd let go of his broom for just a moment and then had been knocked off.

"Reckon I was a bit distracted." He said, reaching up with his good hand to run it through his hair and push it off his forehead. "Wind took me by surprise, is all. It was the fall that broke my wrist."

Hermione knew it was just the potions, but she gave him a look that suggested he ought to listen to her and the potions which were obviously making him tired. But he seemed adamant on staying awake for now and she really had no desire to argue with him. Especially since Madam Pomfrey might kick her out and because they had been on unsteady ground since she found out he'd kissed Linda. Not that it was really any of her business, but it had still felt like another smack in the face; he kept getting together with those in her dormitory.

"I had guessed as much," she said and then gave him a serious look. "Though you should have been more careful, especially while you were flying. The broom is only so big and can only hold you up if you're concentrating. Exactly how far did you fall anyway?"

"Dunno..." He said, shrugging once again. He wasn't sure how high up he'd been flying. "Like 30 or 40 feet? Something like that?" Looking at his watch he realized it was time for his next potion and, upon trying to skip one previously and experiencing intense and horrible pain, he was not keen on trying to do so again. Reaching for the 2 vials he needed to drink, he made a face and winced even before they were in his mouth, remembering their horrid taste. Drinking them down, he shuddered.

"Bloody gross." He said, reaching, with his left hand, for his glass of water and gulping it down quickly.

"You felt thirty feet and all you broke was your wrist?" she asked, looking at him incredulously and the worry she had originally felt increased tenfold. "You're lucky you didn't break your entire arm or your neck!" It was almost improbable - falling that far and only receiving such a minor injury as he did. She shook her head in disbelief, trying not to imagine the scene itself.

Glancing up at him though, she watched as he took two of his potions, knowing that they probably didn't taste the best. And the expression on his face vouched for it. "They aren't usually meant to taste well considering what's in them," she said apologetically.

"Landed on a soft spot of grass, I dunno." He said, trying to think of a reason why he didn't hurt anything else. Really, he had no idea why he'd only broken his wrist. Granted, he had landed directly on it but from that height he should have broken his entire arm. He was just lucky he guessed.

"I wished they could put some sort of flavouring in them. Like chocolate or something. You're smart, Hermione, invent a chocolate flavoured potion." He grinned somewhat at her, or attempted to, but what appeared was a half-smile as he was, of course, slightly weak.

She resisted the urge to roll her eyes when he said he'd landed on a soft spot of grass. Was he trying to be funny about something that was definitely serious. "You should consider yourself lucky," she said, deciding that she didn't really want to hear anymore on the matter because it was only causing her to worry about him all the more.

"Adding chocolate or anything else could easily throw the balance of the potion off without properly and thoroughly being tested for years and years first. There's a reason it's the way it is - it simply works best. Besides, having to take such disgusting potions doesn't exactly entice patients to have the inclination of getting hurt anytime soon."

It was Ron's turn to roll his eyes at her very scientific explanation of why the potion couldn't taste like chocolate. It was so like her and although he feigned annoyance, it was one of the things he found rather cute about her. Well, he found a lot of things cute about her now that he didn't used to. Before fourth year, most of the things he thought were cute were just annoying.

"Will you stay for a bit, 'Mione?" He asked, feeling a bit droawsy but ignoring it. "Gets really lonely and boring in here. Nice to have to someone to talk to." He was sucking up slightly in hopes that she might stick around for a while and keep him company.

She noticed him rolling his eyes and pursed her lips. Sometimes, both his and Harry's reactions were easy to guess when she'd go on about something. Though, really, she was telling the truth - in order to invent a potion that tasted better, someone would have to start from scratch and ensure that it was properly balanced each step of the way.

At his request, however, her expression softened, especially when she realised how hopeful he was that she'd say yet. If only such emotions were directed towards her in ways she wished they would. They were friends though, that much had been clear by his recent philanderings around school. Again, not that it was really any of her business, she just hoped too in her own way.

"Of course I'll stay for a bit," she said, making it sound like it was the most obvious course of action.

Ron smiled brightly at her, thankful she was going to stay with him, even for a little while. He was always worried that Hermione would chastise him and scold him when things like this happened instead of anything else but when she showed concern and she did things that made him happy, he couldn't help but love fancy her even more than he already did.

He moved slightly in bed, attempting to reach out and pat her hand thankfully but, on the way, he knocked his other arm and he hissed in pain, scrunching his eyes shut tight as his wrist began to throb madly. He teared up a bit at the pain, not expecting it and feeling it intensely.

Hermione saw him move and then watched as he hit his arm. Her face screwed up in a look of worry as she leaned forward to touch his arm, making sure not to touch it where it hurt. She knew that hurt. If the look on his face hadn't been enough indication, the tears that welled slightly up in his eyes were signs enough.

"Oh, Ron," she sighed. "You should be more careful." Reaching over on his bedside table, she read the labels and searched for the pain potion. "Here, take this," she instructed, handing it to him once she had finally found it. "But not much since you're only technically supposed to have the recommended dosage, but I doubt Madam Pomfrey would object too much after what you just did."

Ron nodded, taking the offered potion and downing it quickly so he wouldn't have to taste it for very long. He wondered if Hermione would have told him to be more careful if she'd known he was moving to give her a thankful gesture. Nonetheless, he dropped back onto his pillows after having the potion and sighed slightly.

"This bloody sucks." He said, reaching up and wiping his teary eyes with his good hand. "Why am I always getting injured?" He leaned forward tiredly, resting his forehead on her outstretched arm. "Do some of that clever magic of yours and make me better, 'Mione." He mumbled, feeling the pain potion starting to take effect. He was tired, yes, but he was ignoring it. He wanted to talk to Hermione, not fall asleep while she was there. Plus, he wasn't that tired. It'd be a while before he dozed off.

Hermione thought about reminding him that hospitals weren't exactly meant to be fun places and people who were generally there were typically miserable, but upon closer inspection and out of sympathy for him, she refrained from mentioning it. Instead, she quietly watched him take the potion, taking the vial back from him and setting it back where it belonged. However, as she turned around, he moved and rested his head against her hand and she bit her lip in surprise.

"I'm afraid it doesn't quite work like that," she said quietly, surprised by the temptation to reach out and run her fingers through his hair.

"Well," He said, still resting his forehead against her hand, too tired to move at that moment and really, not even wanting to. "You're brilliant... you can think of something." Everyone knew that if Hermione couldn't do something, they were all doomed. She was beyond brilliant and sometimes Ron wondered how on earth she could fit all that information into her head. If he tried to cram that much information into his head, he'd explode.

He turned his head slightly so that it was his cheek that was now resting on Hermione's hand and he sighed because her skin was cool and refreshing.

Part of her began to wonder if Ron was doing this intentionally to unnerve her and catch her off guard. He wasn't acting like he normally did around her - a bit peevish at times and just friendly. Now, however, he was going beyond that and she was still resisting the urge just to run her fingers through his hair or to do anything more.

His compliment didn't go unnoticed and her cheeks turned a light shade of pink. "I'm afraid that it's not possible to just wave your wand and make everything better," she said apologetically. "If I could, I certainly would."

Ron sighed, accepting the fact that Hermione, no matter how brilliant, could not make things better with a wave of her wand. Lifting his head from her hand, he was met with the sight of her face very close to his. It must have been the angle at which he sat up and, because being that close to her made him extremely nervous, he fumbled around in his bed, trying to move but, instead, tangled himself in the sheets and proceeded to tumble right off the side and onto the floor.

"Bloody hell." He groaned, his injured wrist instinctively in the air to avoid further injury and his good hand reaching behind him to rub his lower back. "Typical." He said, sheepishly looking up at Hermione and giving her a lopsided grin.

Hermione noticed just how close they were too when he sat up again. She held her breath, looking at him carefully before backing away just as he managed to fall out of the bed. She gasped and stood quickly, the chair she had been sitting in scratching against the floor loudly.

"Ron!" she cried, reaching down for her. "What in the world, are you all right?" she asked, looking at him and noticing his legs were still in the bed and tangled in the sheets. How had he even managed to do that? -- Nevermind, she hardly wanted to know and was more concerned about helping him.

"Come on," she said, grasping his upper arm and trying to pull him up. "I don't even know how you manage to get yourself into these situations." Part of her knew she'd be smiling and laughing about it later, but for now, she was more worried than anything.

"Part of my charm, isn't it?" He said with a smile, letting her help him up and back into bed. It was partly her fault this time, though he'd never tell her or admit that to her. Really, if she wasn't so close to him and pretty and... well, it wouldn't have happened.

"Thanks, 'Mione." He said as he was finally seated back in bed, her hand still on his arm as she had just finished helping him. Reaching over, he took her hand and squeezed gently in thanks, feeling insanely warm from it, his ears pink, before letting go and settling back into the pillows.

"Something like that," she muttered, pulling him up and helping him get situated in bed. She reached down, straightening up the covers so that they were completely tangled or in a big heap at the foot of the bed. Satisfied, she started to reach for her chair, but he had grasped her hand and squeezed it, and she paused.

"You're welcome," she said after a few seconds. She had noticed the blush in his cheeks and couldn't help one of her own before she gingerly pulled her hand back and finally got the chair.

Ron tried really hard to stay awake after that, really he did but the potions were now running through his system rapidly and he was exhausted from everything that day. He needed the rest and even though he'd much rather stay up and talk to Hermione, he felt his eyes drooping slightly as he lay there.

Soon, his breathing had slowed and he'd dozed off. His head lulled to the side, his hair flopping on his forehead as he fell asleep.

Expecting him to stay awake a bit longer, Hermione was rather surprised after several minutes of him not stirring to find him asleep. She knew it was the potions Madam Pomfrey had him on; the fact that he was sleeping meant that he could get some undisturbed rest while his body mended the broken bone.

As she watched him for a moment, she realised she had never really seen him like this. Not for awhile at least, and even then, it wasn't the same. Biting her lip, she looked around the hospital wing before sighing and getting up. Her chair was returned to its original place and she leaned over him to pull the covers around him again. And then, unable to resist the temptation again, she reached up and brushed the hair gently off his forehead. Then, content that he was sleeping, she let herself out of the hospital wing silently.
