Louis was determined. He as going to beat Gwen at this bet if it killed him. No regrets. So he'd done what any normal person would have done. He was going to make sure he was able to beat her, no matter what the cost. So he walked through the halls with the parchment he'd been given by the head of his house, humming to himself.

When he reached the office for History, he knocked on the door and waited. Nothing was going to stop him. It was a challenge and there was a bit of Gryffindor in him, after all.

Kiernan snorted. "You must study at some point," he said. "Or at least read. I'll take you on as my assistant for now. If you get over-whelmed when OWLs come, you should let me know and I'll cut you loose for the end of the term. They're important, especially if you want to be a professor."

He put the essay down. "Do you dislike me because I'm replacing your favourite professor, or because I asked you not to smoke on the train?"

That was more like it. Obviously Kiernan was smart enough to know that he was the right choice. Even if he'd come here for the bet, he actually wanted the assistant position. He looked back at the other man and arched a brow at the question.

"I didn't say I disliked you." Louis informed the other man, shaking his head. "I've never said that. I do think you're boring and that, as a man who has traveled as much as you and seen as much as you have, you could be a bit more exciting to learn about. But, you're not."

"Well, it's good that you're honest with me," Kiernan said, laughing to himself. "I hope you're managing to maintain a similar level of self-criticism. It'll help when you become a professor and one of your students tells you you're boring a week and a half into your first semester."

He felt a bit like ruffled Louis's hair. Kiernan was going to have to get a cat to take out that kind of urge on. Something bitchy. "The first thing I'm going to need your help with is finishing the cleaning of the file cabinets. I'm moving files from students who are no longer attending Hogwarts out of the office to clear up some space."

"You have all of that?" Louis asked as he looked around the office and then moved to the file cabinets. He picked up one of the files and blew quite a bit of dust off of it, laughing.

"What's in these?" He asked as he flipped one open. "Do you think my father's stuff is still in here?"

"Probably," Kiernan said, looking at the files and snorting. "Binns didn't throw anything away. I'm not sure he could, honestly. He wasn't very aware of his surroundings."

He looked at the papers in Louis's hands. "You can look for them if you want. I'm sure Binns kept them somewhere special. He liked to put his favourite students apart from everyone else. Your files were easy to find."

Louis shrugged. "He hated my sister. Charlotte is the worst person at history that I've ever seen. She refuses to pay attention in class, but I'm sure you won't have a problem with her. She'll probably be all cute and smiley with you, because that's how she is around boys she's attracted to."

He rolled his eyes at that, then reached up on one of the stacks. "It's really hot in here." He told him. "Don't you have a charm in place?"

"You don't sound like you have a very high opinion of your siblings," Kiernan said, pulling out his wand and casting a cooling charm on the room. "I don't mind the room being warm. It's cold outside."

He turned back to the quizes he was marking. "If you set aside all the old files I'll move them to one of the storage rooms later. What classes do you like besides History?"

Louis pulled off his blazer and undid his tie, putting it on the back of a chair. He began to look at the files, undoing the buttons on his dress shirt, exposing his undershirt.

"Other classes?" Louis asked and shrugged. "Defense is important. I'll have to work as a curse-breaker for a few years before I can even apply to be a professor. I'll need to know how to defend myself."

"How are you in Runes?" Kiernan asked, looking up at Louis. "And your Arithmancy? You need at least an OWL in that, don't you? I looked into curse-breaking when I was in school, but I'm more interested in the research aspect of history."

He looked Louis over when he started stripping, laughing a little. "Is it really that hot?" he asked. "You can cast your own cooling charms as well."

"I'm fine. I usually walk around in my undershirt." Louis admitted as he pulled off his dress shirt. "I figure I may as well get comfortable if I'm going to help you with this."

He flopped back in one of the chairs, starting to read over the files. "This James person is an idiot. Looks like he pissed his way through his papers."

Kiernan put his glasses back on, beginning to mark again and then laughing at Louis's comment. "If you go through the files I think you'll find that that's not an uncommon strategy. A lot of students don't take History very seriously."

He glanced back at him in his undershirt. "It's probably a good idea not to wear your uniform when you're dealing with those dusty papers anyway. Feel free to wear your casual clothes."

Louis looked up at the other man in the room and shook his head. "It's such a waste. People should realise that we can learn from the past to insure that nothing like this ever happens again. We'll see the signs."

"Don't give me that option. My pants and this undershirt are my casual clothes." Louis pointed out. "I usually lay around naked."

"Not that casual," Kiernan agreed, laughing. "I was thinking denims and a t-shirt, maybe. I don't think it would be appropriate or very practicaly for you to spend the day working in your pants and undershirt."

Louis was far too young for him to be imagining what he'd look like in his pants. Or naked. Even if he was pretty. Kiernan smiled at him. "As long as some people pay attention to history we have a chance."

"It's just astonishing that some people aren't interested in where they came from." Louis told Kiernan with a shrug. "I don't understand the lack of interest."

He ran a hand through his hair and then rolled his eyes. "This Evan bloke can't draw a penis to save his life."
