One thing that made Carter a great mechanic was the fact that he often did things like check the engine for routine maintenance. Obviously most would think that sort of thing was a no brainer, but a lot of the time people got lazy and waited until something catastrophic happened that needed attention. Of course Carter was always ready for that kind of scenario, but that didn't mean that he was going to wait around for them to happen. He cleaned the engine - or kept it as clean as one could keep an engine - and made sure that there was no dust that lingered around too long. Dust meant clogs and clogs meant overheating and the Strattus just didn't need any of that. Captain Eckhart liked to keep moving and so did Carter.

Carter had just finished doing his routine evening checks. Every morning and every night like clockwork he went through a checklist to make sure that everything was running smoothly. It kept little problems from becoming big ones for the most part. He came out of the engine room and made his way down to the eating and common area so that he could wash his hands clean.

Tyne liked routine. Perhaps it had been Carter's reliability of schedule in the seeming chaos of going where the jobs were that drew him to the mechanic. He kept tabs on him from a distance. At any point in time, Tyne could be asked where Carter was and would know the answer with a disturbing amount of accuracy. Not that people frequently asked him where Carter was.

As obsessed as Tyne had become with Carter, he hadn't spent a great deal of time with him. He liked to keep to just his brother, feeling safer that way. It could not be said whether safety concerns were for Tyne or for other people involved. Sometimes the boy went berserk for no apparent reason. But today, he was waiting for Carter in the hall outside of the engine room. He'd put on his best smile, though it stretched his mouth a little too wide and it almost ended up more creepy than anything. He could only go so long investigating someone without actually wanting to hang around them.

"Hello. Did you know that you're always at this spot at 1700 hours?" Tyne tilted his head like dog who'd just heard something undeniably interesting.

Carter had noticed Tyne, but who didn't notice him? The kid was odd, but that wasn't the only reason why Carter had taken notice of him. Tyne was beautiful. He was beautiful in that strange sort of way that could be startling to some people, but Carter had just been drawn in by it. And of course Tyne's odd behavior only drew him in more, but he rarely got to see the boy because he was always off hiding away somewhere so when Carter happened upon him on his way to the common area he arched a brow in surprise.

"Am I?" he asked as he tipped his head to the side. "How do you know that? Have you been spying on me?" he asked with a teasing tone and a smile.

Tyne mimicked the head motion to the exact degree and direction simultaneously as Carter did it. It was as if he'd seen it coming. "I've been--" he paused because he could almost hear Mattie in his head saying not to be creepy, though he wouldn't use that word 'creepy.'

"I've been observing your movements. You're very predictable when it comes to how you care for this ship. The blue handed men had schedules too. Schedules, schedules, schedules, always a time for everything and everything for a time."

"So you have been spying," Carter said, though his tone was light and he was still smiling as he whisked past Tyne to go over to the sink area so that he could wash his hands. "Am I? I guess I am. I like to make sure that everything is working the way it should be, it helps prevent problems with the ship," he explained as he glanced over at Tyne. "Blue handed men?" he asked with a raised brow and a slight cock of his head.

He held up his hand and wiggled his fingers. "Men with blue hands." As if that cleared it all up. Tyne often explained things that way which made it almost fruitless to ask clarification questions. However, sometimes, in moments of pure lucidity, he could be very insightful and so it was always worth a chance. But now was not one of those times.

"So you fix problems before they happen?" He tried to grasp the concept of maintenance. "No," he corrected himself. "You're just extra careful to watch for them." With very stealthy movements, he seemed to appear out of nowhere, right next to Carter by the sink. He leaned over to watch the water run over his hands.

"Yes, I'm careful to watch for them," Carter said as he glanced up to look behind him, but Tyne was all ready right next to him. "I think you watch for problems, too. Just in other ways. Like with people. You always know when someone is in an off mood."

Sometimes how right Tyne could be about things was downright uncanny. It made Val a little uneasy, but Carter didn't seem to mind it one bit. He liked Tyne's strangeness.

"Everyone knows when someone is in an off mood. They just don't know how to understand it." He smiled and then suddenly his face was a mask of frustration. "I'm--talking weird again, aren't I." Sometimes it was like two different people were warring for control over his brain. "Am I freaking you out? Val doesn't like me. I can tell. Mattie must be busy with something to have let me go wandering again."

"I don't think you're talking weird," Carter said as he drew his hands back and dried them off before he turned to lean against the counter. "Val just doesn't like that you can sense things about him that he'd rather keep hidden is all. He likes to think he's mysterious," Carter added with a wiggle of his eyebrows. "But really, he's not."

Tyne was delightfully distracted by the wiggle of Carter's eyebrows. He reached up to gently touch one of them, drawing his fingertip over the blond arch. He tried to make his own wiggle like that, but he was not nearly as successful and his nose moved more than his eyebrows.

"He wants to protect the Captain, which means he has to protect the ship. The ship isn't as important to him as the Captain, you know. I don't know why anyone would want to hide that. It seems very noble."

When Tyne reached up to touch one of his eyebrows, Carter let him. A faint smile tugged at the corners of his mouth and he watched while the younger boy tried to mimic him. It was really rather adorable.

"The ship isn't as important as the Captain?" he asked. He agreed, but he wanted to hear Tyne's reasoning behind why he thought as much. Tyne always had an interesting way of looking at things. "What makes you say that?" he asked curiously.

He considered the why for awhile and then spoke when he'd formed a theory. "Because the captain is more portable than the ship. He can go more places with Val. That's why he cares more about the captain than about the ship." It was how Tyne interpreted friendship. People fit into more places than ships. Even if that was more of a metaphorical explanation, Tyne understood it more literally.

"What do you think? You talk to the ship better than you talk to people." Not that Carter was particularly bad at socializing, but there was a connection Tyne saw with the mechanical bits and bobs.

It was such a strange answer, but Carter could apprecaite it and he couldn't help but smile. He had no idea why he found Tyne so fascinating. Most people on the ship tried to steer clear of him, but not Carter.

"I suppose that makes sense," he said with a nod. "I think they've been through a lot of things together and have a lot of memories. They're like kindred spirits. And do I?" he asked, tipping his head to the side. "I guess that's true. I'm good at handling the ship but I figure if I'm good to her she'll be good to us."

"I do watch you a lot," he admitted as he glanced down at his bare feet. He liked walking around the Stratus with no shoes on because he thought that it was easier to feel what was going on. Twisting the ball of his foot against the floor, he looked a little ashamed. "Mattie says I shouldn't." Because there was observing and then there was stalking, and with Tyne's emotional problems, it could always turn into something dangerous without him even realizing it.

"Hey," Carter said softly with a frown and he reached out to gently touch the side of Tyne's arms. "It's all right. I don't mind you watching me at all. It kinda makes me feel sorta special," he explained with a half smile. "Not many people find me interesting enough to watch, you know? It's nice."

Yes, Tyne could be unstable, but Carter somehow managed to handle the boy just fine. It was as if he was meant to do it.

Tyne looked up and a wide smile broke out on his face. The fact that Carter was okay with it made him beam with relief. Deep down, he'd trusted that Carter wouldn't judge him for an honest confession. His casual reaction confirmed that and Tyne instantly felt closer to him.

"You're very interesting. I don't understand why everyone doesn't watch you. If anything, you'd think they'd want to know more about the person who keeps them flying."

Carter found Tyne infinitely intersting, and that fact alone made it all the more flattering that Tyne found him interesting in return. Carter smiled a little bit at the compliment and he lifted a hand to ruffle it through his blonde hair almost shyly. Maybe it was wrong to be attacted to Tyne, given his mental state sometimes, but it was just so hard not to be.

"You are a flatterer, Tyne," he said as he pushed away from the counter he'd been leaning on and went to sit at the table a few few feet away as he pulled out a deck of cards from his back pocket. "How about you show me some of those tricks you know?"

Carter had tried to show his own tricks, but Tyne had quickly shown him up.

Very dexterous fingers was only a small section of his many talents. Pleased that someone had taken an interest in his skills (rather than simply being terrified of them), Tyne approached the table and reached for the deck of cards like a timid squirrel taking offered food.

But once he'd gotten a hold of them, he sat down and started to flip them easily against the table, shuffling and flicking them from hand to hand as if they were instantly a part of him. "It isn't flattering if it's the truth," he added in response to Carter's previous comment.

Tyne cut the deck and lifted up a card, bending it just enough to make it stand out from the rest. He put it in the middle of the deck and then tapped it a couple of times as if to push the bent card up to the top. Eventually, the top card popped as if it had traveled through and he grinned.

Carter held the deck of cards out patiently until Tyne took them, and then he drew his hand back and just watched as the boy started to to shuffle them as if he was an expert dealer on one of the planets notorious for gambling habits. He couldn't help but smile a little bit because it was fun to watch and it was just fascinating, really.

"How'd you get so good at that?" he asked when the card popped and Tyne grinned. "Or did you just know how - figure it out without even really having to try? Mattie says you're very smart."

And the man certainly wasn't lying. Tyne was very bright, so bright that some people on the ship were uncomfortable with his level of intelligence alone. Not Carter, though.

"Come away, O human child: To the waters and the wild with a fairy, hand in hand, For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand." Tyne murmured the words to himself, looking at his hands as if they weren't a part of him. Then he shrugged. "They wanted us to keep our hands busy. Some of us learn better when our bodies are moving too. So they gave use things to do with our hands. Always busy. We needed to always be busy." It was easier to control children who were not left to idle.

He shook his head, breaking out of the moment. "How did you get so good at machines? They like you. I'm trying to learn all their sounds, what it means when they clank or clink."

Carter always wanted to ask who they were. Of course he knew that Tyne was speaking of the men who'd had him before, but he wanted to know more. He couldn't ask, though. He'd learned from Mattie and from observing Tyne that sometimes the smallest thing could set the boy off and it was never good.

"My Dad and I always worked on just about anything we could get our hands on," Carter said with a shrug. "He said I had a knack for it, I was just a natural I guess?" he smiled. "You gonna learn everything, huh? Then the Captain won't need me anymore."

"I'll just learn how to talk to the ship, not fix it." It was a weird distinction to make, but Tyne was full of those. And even though people tread carefully around him, he asked the questions he wanted to, regardless of the fact that they might be impolite. "Where is your dad now?" He hadn't heard anything about Carter's past life and now that he was able to really talk to him, he felt like he should ask about all of that.

He settled the deck of cards for only a moment before thinking it better to keep his hands busy and picking them up again. Idle hands were bad, Tyne was a very kinetic person.

Carter arched a brow and he just sort of gave a single nod of his head as if what Tyne had said just dawned on him and made sense because it actually did make sense.

"He passed away about a year before I came on board here," Carter said as his gaze flickered down to focus on Tyne's hands and the cards again. "I think that's one of the reasons I wanted to leave home. It's hard to live in a place full of so many memories like that. It's better to move on and make new memories."

He very much liked the idea of crafting new memories. He pictured the two of them in some quaint little factory, assembling new memories from bits and pieces of their experiences. It was funny that he pictured them doing it together with no one else around, as if the two of them had already forged a close bond.

"Well, if you're good at fixing things then maybe you'd be good at fixing me too. Mattie doesn't say that I need fixing, but I know that I do. I'm not how I remember myself." Though he wasn't quite able to be aware of the real differences. All Tyne knew was that he was, indeed, different. "After I'm fixed, I'll be able to make better memories."

Hearing Tyne say that broke Carter's heart a little bit because he really did wish that he could fix the boy somehow. The moment's when Tyne was completely lucid were growing a bit more frequent than they had been, but hat made the times in between even more difficut sometimes. At least for Carter, anyway... And Mattie, too, he was sure.

"How do you remember yourself?" Carter asked after a moment, thinking that maybe getting Tyne to talk about it might help.

His memories of himself were more memories of how people reacted to him. There was a distinct difference between before and after the facility. "People liked me when I was little. They weren't afraid of me and always wondered what I could do with excitement instead of dread." Now, people were leery of him, assessing what he could do to hurt them.

Thinking too reflectively about himself made him nervous and he wrapped his arms around his waist. Looking at the floor, he shivered. "I think that in the school, they made me harm people. I remember my hands--" he flexed his fingers but didn't finish the sentence.
