The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

James really wasn't taking this 'not being Lily's legal husband' very well. Actually, he wasn't taking it at all, and while the games were fun, he found himself getting increasingly annoyed at the ministry for all the bullshit they've managed to put them through. Sometimes he found himself ranting, and it made him realize how seriously he took his marriage to Lily. Oy, he'd talked Flitwick's ear off the other day about rights and liberties, making his third years wait fifteen minutes before the start of a lesson. James really didn't find this funny, not at all--

--but he wasn't exactly sober enough to care at the moment.

"Miss. Evans," James let out, leaning forward with a great smirk on his face. This better be Lily, or he was going to get into a lot of trouble. Maybe he'd had too much to drink, but--no, no, it had only been a glass or two, and he knew Lily's voice, and her curves, and---yes. This was his definitely wife--person.

"I think I'm going to have to make sure you don't say a word."

Truth be told, Lily wasn't exactly relishing in not being legally married anymore either. Sure, in her mind she and James had been married since last year, were still married now, and would remain married no matter what idiotic laws the Ministry passed that said otherwise. But no matter how much she cast it off, that law was still written down in the book, in ink and stamped with the Wizengamot's seal of approval, and if you asked anyone in Great Britain, they were going to tell you that, no, in fact there were no such people as 'the Potters.' It was James Potter and Lily Evans because lowly Muggleborns just couldn't sully tradition like that.

It pissed her off. It pissed her off more than anything that they had done up until this point--and she wasn't going to say a damn thing about it. She was going to grin and lie and be outwardly okay, because Lily knew that it was doing James no favors if she got upset, and that it was getting them nowhere either. The best thing she could do was smirk as he addressed her as 'Evans'--well, okay, so he'd called her that when they were married too--and take a long drink of champagne.

Setting her empty glass down on the table, Lily leaned forward to brush her lips against James' ear, and smiled wickedly. "Oh, I don't know. I'm quite a screamer."

He simply could not help the low chuckle that escaped his throat, and James' hand went to her waist to pull her closer. Why wouldn't he be amused at that, why should he bother to hide it? No, no--making your wife scream in that oh so perfect way, that was something you wanted to hear, not something you blushed and turned away at. And it helped that over the course of their relationship James had managed to turn Lily into some sort of sexual deviant. He'd always known she had it in her, the red hair was a definite sign, but every time she said something like that he got shivers, and was glad he was able to help unleash her new ways.

"We can't have you causing a scene," he said, close enough to cause his lips to graze against hers. James' nose brushed a line across Lily's cheek as he moved to focus on her jawline; he couldn't get scolded for that, right? That was just a lover's greeting, for sure.

Still. They would probably have to get out of here soon; James was laid back, but he'd rather not snog his wife in front of students. Because--just imagining McGonagall getting frisky in plain sight was enough to make him latch onto Lily's wrist to begin tugging her toward the exit.

Lily gave no protest to James' plan to leave the ballroom. Even before their little conversation via journals, there was only one thing that she'd really had in mind when it came to tonight. For most girls, it was how perfect they were going to look in their dress--for Lily, it was how perfectly she could get James to take it off.

So she wasn't the virginal goody-two-shoes she'd been for seventeen years of her life. She was at a married-ish woman, wasn't she? It was her right to be ridiculously dirty when it came to her husband thing.

Although--out of the corner of her eyes, she noticed a few people turning to watch them leave, and Lily blushed lightly at the knowing looks they were giving the two of them. At that moment, she couldn't have been more thankful for the mask part of this masked ball--to think what kind of trouble they'd get in if their students recognized them and saw them leaving the ballroom hand in hand like this.

Oy, had they been this bad of role models when they were the Heads?

The minute they passed the threshold to the Great Hall, Lily let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding, and took the lead, tugging her husband thing off in the direction of the stairs. "Come on, I know the perfect place."

They had more than enough security and chaperons for it to be fine that they left. Hitwizards were definitely more capable of keeping a bunch of people in line than he and Lily, so, really. McGonagall would probably be glad that he was away from the kids; that meant there was less trouble to be had. Though, how she was still wary about him after two months of being a proper role model in the classroom, James would never know. You'd think she'd be able to separate the past from the present!

James was enjoying the sound of there footsteps echo off the walls of the empty corridors, and he let his mind wander. It was amazing how much their lives had changed since they were students; literally less than a month they were married, and less than two weeks after that they had been forced to face Voldemort face to face for the second time. And now, more than a year than that, they were back and sneaking around and snogging---

"In our broom closet," James said with uncontainable amusement, his grin nearly reaching his ears. Oh, the fun they had in this closet. James could recall some rather entertaining times in that narrow space, and--"Was this where I got that sticky gunk on my knee?"

He pulled Lily to him, only to press her hard against the door of the broom closet. James' face came close, "Is that what happened in there?"

So Lily hadn't been able to get her mind off of that stupid broom cupboard since she had found out they were going to be going back to Hogwarts. Apart from her bedroom, that singular cupboard held the most of her important Hogwarts memories with James, and she had known that there was no way that they were going to leave the school again without taking another visit back there.

It was harder than she had expected, though--as professors, they couldn't be seen sneaking around, and it was far more scandalous to be noticed ducking out of a broom cupboard than when they were just students. And there always seemed to be people around--it's not like they could skip class to go--, or other things to do. But when James had mentioned his alternative to the dance atmosphere, Lily had known that this was going to be that chance she had been waiting for to let them visit their old domain. Because it was theirs, no matter how many generations of Hogwarts students would use it for their scandalous deeds. No one could possibly ever own this cupboard but the two of them.

"Mmm, I think I recall that," she drawled slyly, one hand on the knob behind her to turn it. Her weight on the door pushed it open, and her other hand grabbed the front of James' suit jacked to pull him in after her. "I also seem to recall this being the spot where some-or-the-other friend of yours locked us up one time."
