The Halloween Ball! --Posted for Friday!
In all of her years at Hogwarts, in all of her years being a prefect and working on a team full of the best students in Hogwarts, Phoebe Smethwyck had never been as impressed as she was right now as she stared around the Great Hall. Illuminated with candles in all shapes and sizes (and colors, a nifty charm a sixth year had found), the tables surrounding the dance floor were decorated with pumpkins, spiderwebs, and fall leaves, creating a spooky, yet beautiful design. The Ghosts of Hogwarts had volunteered to mingle more than usual (she thanked Nearly Headless Nick profusely, and promised to hold him a belated Death-Day party), captivating the guests with stories---how much truth they held, she couldn't be sure, but they were interesting nonetheless.

The band was a new kind of wizard rock, a bit more political than the Hobgoblins, W.O.A.R. There had been a lot of discussion at the prefect meetings about whether or not they should try and book them, but at the end of the day the naysayers (read: the Slytherins) were outvoted, and the band with the hit song "Do You Believe in M.A.G.I.C" was creating an incredible atmosphere.

So---people looked happy. They were laughing, smiling, and just---happy. Not something Phoebe felt like the wizarding world had been in a long time, and she was glad to be a big part of it.

Now, if only she could find a reason to be happy, herself.

Boy, this whole dating two girls thing was a very tiring business!

Tilden had spent half the time just running, back and forth to Greta and Daisy. He made great, really airtight excuses such as, "Let me go get some punch," and "Uh, I'll be right back." And they waited patiently for him! Wow, no wonder he loved them both so much!

He had just seen Greta again and told her that he'd get some punch - but on the way, he had to rest. The man was tired! He was just a simple man who was not used to this. Happily, he caught sight of his best friend in the entire world, Gildly, and they chatted about very important matters, such as their hair, and their suits, and how good they - and oh yeah, everyone else - looked. Tilden almost never wore suits, so he had to have Gildly over earlier, to help him get dressed; he had to aid Tilden in every single step.

Gildy and Tildy chatted quite a bit, and before long, Tilden realized that he had left Greta - or was it Daisy? No, it was Greta, and he quickly snatched up some refreshments. Gilderoy patted him on the back for a job well done, as Tilden was initially hesitant about taking both loves of his life to the same event. He came up behind Little Grety, placing a drink in her hand. "Waiting long?" he asked, adjusting his mask with one hand.

Then his mouth dropped open in pure, unadulterated horror as he caught sight of the tiny blonde in front of Greta. His other date. And even though the masks were covering their faces, he could tell that they weren't happy with him.

"I - I... I CAN EXPLAIN!"

He would never. He would never!

That was the mantra Daisy had been chanting over and over in her mind as Tilden approached them. He would NEVER, and he was going to come over here and explain to this wild Catchlove girl that she was delusional and he was not there with her at all and that Daisy was the only girl for him and they were going to run off and get married and have lots of ba---

Okay, so her mind was expecting too much of this, but it should not have been too much to expect that he would never come to a ball with her and Greta Catchlove both as dates.

And then he opened his mouth.

Bad things always seemed to results when Tilden opened his mouth.

"... you can explain?" Daisy ventured, turning her full wrath away from Greta and to him instead. There was a distinct crescendo in her voice, in both volume and anger. "You can explain!? Explain what, Tilden! I think it's pretty obvious what you're doing!"

Greta's eyebrows shot up so high, they were practically off her head. The mask did not impede the looks of death she was shooting Tilden Toots at this moment.

"Tilden. Toots," Greta said, softly. Of course, this wasn't a sign that she was appeased in anyway. It was the soft, dangerous kind of whisper a murderer might emit right before sneaking up on his murder victim. Which, in her mind, was exactly what was happening to Tilden. Grisly. Murder.

"Do you mean to tell me that you have spent the last--the last--the last months courting not only me, but her," her finger shot out to point at Daisy, "as well? And then you have the gall and idiocy to brings us TO THE SAME DANCE?"

All right, so she lost the soft edge a bit when she roared the last part.

This was--the most insane thing that could happen to her. And what's worse is that she didn't even see it coming! And she should have.

It was a good thing this dress slightly impeded movement, because that was all that was preventing her from launching herself at him this very instant.

OH NOOOOOOOOOOOO was the only thing that was running through Tilden's head that moment. His mouth was dropped wide open, and he briefly wondered if it would stay that way forever. How could this plan fail?! He had gone over this with his very best friend in the whole wide world, Gildy, and he had assured him that it was foolproof! Foolproof!

"I - I CAN EXPLAIN!" he repeated. His eyes shifted nervously from one angry girl to another - ohhh, they were still so pretty when they were mad and - NO, must focus! "OH, WON'T YOU LET ME EXPLAIN?!"

He shifted from one foot to another, wishing that he was in his garden. Maybe the truth would set him free. Maybe! He heard that quote before, and like most things he heard, he wasn't quite sure that he understood it. But!

"You see," he started, backing up a little. They were getting a little close, and although he LOVED them close, this wasn't a good kind of close. "I like you both..."

The mask was of no consequence when it came to Daisy, who was glaring daggers through it (and probably imagining them stabbing themselves repeatedly into Tilden's chest while she was at it) at the man in front of her. There was no way that this was happening right now. He was just so---unbelievably---stu---NO, STUPID wasn't even a strong enough word to describe him. STUPID didn't even begin to cover it. Tilden was beyond stupid, he was---he was---

OH MY GOD THIS MAN WAS GOING TO DIE.

"You like us both... You like us BOTH!" Daisy repeated, ending hollering. So what if she was close enough to be talking normally---she hope she burst a fucking eardrum! "HOW DOES THAT MAKE IT OKAY THAT YOU'VE BEEN CHEATING ON ME FOR THE PAST TWO MONTHS AND JUST SHOWED UP AT A BALL WITH ANOTHER DATE!?"

And you know, Daisy really hoped he didn't answer, because she didn't want to hear what he had to say at all. All she wanted to do was scream at and possibly castrate him and then be on her way back to her dorm. Where she would tear up every picture of him she had and throw it out the fucking window.

"You can't do that, Tilden," Greta snapped, tossing her head. "You can't like two girls at the same time, and you cannot date two girls at the same time. AND YOU CANNOT BRING THEM BOTH AS YOUR DATE TO A DANCE AND TRY TO HIDE IT FROM THEM!"

This was bad. This was the angriest she'd been in a very, very long time. This was--this was--this was worse than the Gryffindor-Ravenclaw girls war before school got out.

"It's obvious that you've been stringing us along this entire time. Why would anything you say now make one iota of difference in how dead you're going to be when I get my hands on you."

The thought of strangling him right now as extremely appealing. He might have been larger than her, but she was madder, and pretty sure she could take down a man of that stature.
