Mer!
A day off would be good, Derek had decided. A day off was a chance for him to get some fresh air, clear his head, and just escape from life for a day. Not that he didn't love his job and the release it afforded him, or the fact that he was no longer coming home to a drab, empty flat at the end of the day, but sometimes… the need for escape was overwhelming. Work was getting increasingly stressful over the last few weeks, not to mention tasks for the Order, and Derek had been putting in overtime, as a means of cautiously giving Vinny his space for the rocky period his friend must have been going through.

But today, no patrols, no underground groups of rebellion to bother with, none of it. Just a quiet day to himself.

Or it would have been, had the fates not been constantly conspiring against the poor man.

On the streets of Muggle London, not far from the Leaky Cauldron, which was his eventual destination, Derek noted that traffic of the vehicular and foot kind were abundant—more so than usual. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see a flash of blonde hair—ordinarily not anything to concern him, but it was this precise shade of blonde (nearly platinum, thus, very easy to pick out of a crowd) that was unmistakable. This might have been cause for Derek to walk right on by, had he not noticed the girl about to step onto the street, right in path of an oncoming lorry, and one that was showing no signs of slowing down, at that.

Derek's mind had not even processed what was happening as instinct took over, his size cutting an easy path through the floods of people as he as fast as he could. He pulled his wand from the back of his jeans' pocket as he sped up, but no spell of any kind was coming to mind—all he could see was the ugly collision that would be taking place if he didn't hurry.

The horn blared as he dove into the street, knocking Meredith out of the way, into the other lane. It braked suddenly, the driver tossing out words that undoubtedly contained many expletives that drowned out as the tires squealed and he took off again.

"Idiot!" Derek yelled, trying to move them before the break in traffic disappeared. "The signal was still red!"
