DIAGON ALLEY, EARTHQUAKE
"And you know what? There is not a sale worth going out in this heat, I'm serious!"

Javier grinned, putting up his hands in a defensive manner, "I'm sorry, but I don't need a pair of robes that badly, have you seen those temperatures? I'm surprised Fortescue's is still standing, would've thought they'd have melted awaaaaaay----whoa, what is---"

He gripped onto the desk, eyes widening as he rumbled and rolled away because the fucking building was shaking! Javier let out numerous words that were not politically correct to say on the wireless, and toppled out of his chair, busting his head on the floor. Strings of angry Spanish soared out of his mouth as he crawled up to his knees, and Javier grabbed the microphone.

Through the glass he saw that the other members of his staff were looking like they'd just been shot, and it took Javier a few good seconds to realize what the fuck happened, as another rumbling, rolling coursed through the studio. Javier dropped to the ground, covering his head with his hand as he shouted angrily into the microphone:

"ARE WE EXPERIENCING A FUCKING EARTHQUAKE IN DIAGON ALLEY?"

Chester really needed to learn to look at the paper more often, because if he had done that he wouldn't have picked the busiest weekend to go to Diagon Alley. It was ridiculous how many people were here. He scowled ducking down a less populated alley way. There now he could breathe and not worry about convincing himself not to hex all the rude people who were walking into him.

He moved swiftly towards his destination when the ground violently jerked underneath his feet causing him to misstep and sending him into the wall with a resounding crack.

Ow. What the fuck was that? The ground just fucking moved and sent him into a fucking wall. He reached up and gently touched the sore spot on his head. Ow. He held his fingers out in front of him to find them a crimson red. Fantastic. He was bleeding. He stared at the blood sliding down his fingers and onto his palm.

Chester was pulled from his trance by someone nearby crying. He look up to find a girl huddled a little ways down the alley. Looking around, Chester verified that she was the only other person around. Well, someone had to help her. He carefully got up from where he was sitting and made his way down to the girl. Maybe today wouldn't be such a waste after all.

"Miss, are you alright?" he said filling his voice with concern as he knelt down in front of her.

"I think I broke my wrist when I fell" she sniffled.

"Here let me take a look." he said taking her wrist into his hand. "Hmm, it might just be sprained" Like he fucking knew. He looked up at her and a lazy smirk fell into place on his face. He tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. Ah, now she looked even more scared. Perfect. "Don't worry, doll, you should be just fine."

He'd been on his way home from work - he'd finally gotten the paperwork through to unhook his floor and apparation charms in a week when they headed to Italy with the children so things would settle down and they'd be safe.

So much for that.

Nick took cover down the nearest alleyway, trying to cover his head and ignore the persistent throb of a newly opened cut on his jaw. He furrowed his brows and glared down his nose at the other man as he spotted him and then the little girl. She looked extremely terrified, honestly, and this guy definitely didn't look like her daddy.

"Well, you're right about her being fine." He let his hand slip into his robes, ready to grab his hand whenever he needed it.

Chester fought the urge to scowl as he looked over his shoulder at the man that just approached them. "Just offering her some assistance." he said as he stood facing the man keeping a close eye on him. He didn't miss the fact that he was reaching into his robes, probably for his wand. "And I'm usually right about these sort of things as well."

the girl took this as he chance to get away. She was grateful that other man had shown up, she was, but she wasn't about to stick around to find out what was going to happen between the two. Chester looked behind him when he heard her running away. Great. He glanced down at the bags she had left behind. Seventh year books... seventeen tops. He let out a sigh.

"Now look what you've done. You've scared off my friend. How do you propose I spend my afternoon now?" He wiped the blood that was dripping from his hair off the back of his neck, ignoring the massive headache that was forming. Right now he was more annoyed than anything. Why did he have to show up and ruin his fun.

Kobe!
[info]mynameisjonas
2009-08-06 04:43 am UTC (link)
Jonas and his mates had shown up at Florean's around 10:30 for a dab of ice cream before they'd headed out to the patio to fill up their corner with instruments and cases. Everything was acoustic today so that called for some larger implements -- namely a stand-up bass, some conga drums, and a variety of guitars. The drum kit was unwieldy on its own. They were a bit cramped, but it would do. Jonas was over the moon about the whole thing. It was hard to get gigs when almost no one has heard of your band. So, playing outside of a ice cream parlor in Diagon Alley? Totally doable and welcome.

They weren't only ones there, though. A pretty blond bird had shown up not long after the band and had lurked -- passing by the parlor once or twice before going to get ice cream, sitting a couple tables away but always glancing over. Jonas had happily gone over to introduce himself and discovered that she was a Zeus fan. So, of course he'd giddily hugged her and insisted she sit at the table nearest to their setup.

Jonas was helping the bassist perform the Sonorous charms as they tuned the instruments when the world went sideways. He was smack on the ground before he knew what hit him. The ground was rumbling and shaking like mad; people were screaming, buildings were pitching. Jonas hurriedly looked around for his band and the girl -- Kobe -- when he noticed a shadow growing over him.

"Look out!" was all Jonas could futilely shout as the Florean Fortescue's sign came crashing down on top of them all.

Well shit.

Kobe had been having a pleasant morning. She'd skipped out into Diagon and found the cutest set of summer robes at Twilfit & Tattings. On sale! She really did love sales (and spending money that wasn't hers), and she really loved free concerts. Kirby had never made her pay to see a Hobgoblin show, but Kobe could only see her brother jump around like a fool so many times. This was exciting because she was making the venture on her own, and to be honest, she felt like she'd discovered this band. Except like---she hadn't, but none of her friends really knew who they were so. When In the Name of Zeus became famous, she was going to take all the credit.

Ugh, it was proving to be such a great time, too. First she was going to see her favorite unknown band perform live and the gorgeous lead singer had hugged her, and now she was going to die.

Maybe she shouldn't have thought 'Oh, now I can die happily!' when Jonas had hugged her.

Ow. Ow, ow, ow! Kobe blearily blinked her eyes open, the shock of a giant glowing F in her face sending her into an even deeper shock. She let out a strangled sort of sound, her arms shaking as they lifted to push the sign away from her, but moving it made her stomach hurt. What, what----The sign had crashed down onto her table, and the table was now pressing into her stomach like it was ready to cut her in half.

"Oh for fuck's sake," she moaned, dropping her head back to the pavement beneath her. She really was going to fucking die, wasn't she?

Jonas's vision was blurred when he came to. All he could hear was the shrill, fuzzy ringing in his ears and beat of his heart. He couldn't smell right away and it hurt to breathe -- it really, really bloody hurt to breathe. His mind was sluggish but he knew he had to move. Jonas's forearms scraped against the concrete of the patio as he attempted to get roll to his knees, but failed. His dazed brown eyes cast around a slow and ill-aimed glance to see a piece of heavy steel pinning him to the ground. It was something like an out-of-body experience as he kicked and shoved himself outh from beneath the scaffolding. His arms were scratched and his jeans were ripped at the knee, but at least he was free and was immediately snapped back into the world of mass panic.

There was screeching and calls for help coming from every direction and that sent pangs of worry straight through Jonas's chest. He could hardly believe this was happening. He glanced up at the ice cream parlor as he climbed to his feet. It was miraculously mostly-intact -- albeit a tad wrecked on the inside. He looked around to his band-mates rousing from their spots and helping each other to their feet. He called out to them anyway and was waved off.

Oh, Zeus! There was still Kobe! Their one fan. The Florean's sign had come careening for them both and he was praying that she'd managed to scrabble away. He heard her shout. His heart broke and his breath hitched when he saw her blond hair peeking out from beneath wreckage. Putting a had to the screaming pain in his side, Jonas tensed his jaw and dizzily went to her. "Kobe?" he called out as he lowered himself down to get a better look at her. He swallowed in worry when he saw exactly how resolutely she was pinned.

Standing once more, he futilely pushed at the heavy sign that refused to move. Oh, for the love of... "It's not budging!," he sadly announced before kneeling down to her again. "Can you move at all? How badly are you hurt?"

Elphias couldn't believe he was actually working in a library of all places. It was a dream job and it'd been served up on a platter for him. He could pay for his own living space, now!

He'd been working in the library for less than two weeks, but he already felt like he was at home amongst the shelves upon shelves upon shelves of musty old books. It was glorious. Well, except for the moment when the earthquake hit.

Elphias was bent over, shifting books, when the first quiver sent him careening backward. He slammed head-and-shoulders first into the column of shelved books behind him, which knocked him dizzy. He went for his wand, but mother nature was faster.

Getting whacked in the face by a large text volume on Herbology was the last conscious moment for Elphias. He took another nasty hit to the head as his entire body was pinned between the two heavy columns of shelved books -- the crunch of bone and flesh unable to be heard over the thunderous sounds of other shelves falling.

It had been a day like any other, so far as Severus Snape was concerned. The one difference for today was that there was altogether too many people. He'd had NEWT students and overeager first years coming in to hunt for ingredients they either seriously or mistakenly required, not to mention representatives from St. Mungo's Hospital coming to collect orders that had been requested for brewing. The sheer amount of foot traffic in Slugs & Jiggers made Snape wonder why he had even considered working here, the answer to which would have been that Slugs & Jiggers attracted a quarter, if that, of its current patronship in the regular week. The first clue that something was going awry was the tinkling of broken glass. Having been the one to personally secure the shelves from idle, thieving hands, and the occasional jostling when loading items on the shelves, Snape knew that it would take something incredibly powerful to break through those protective and cushioning charms. But jars in the back rooms were falling, vials and beakers crashing into one another, and he knew at once that chaos was about to unleash itself. It was his good fortune, Snape supposed, that there were no customers in the apothecary at the moment, but it was only a matter of time before some sorry soul desperate for cover took it upon themselves to take refuse in here.

He had deduced from the tremors and resulting damage that Diagon Alley was currently suffering from an earthquake, and one, given the magical properties of the alleyway, which probably had supernatural origins. Now, the only thing left to do was figure out how to extricate himself from the situation, because he had no desire to sustain more damage from the disaster that he already had, which was various cuts on the arms and face from the glass shards. The building was clearly only going to be standing for a little while longer, however, and Snape didn't want to chance that. He slipped out the entrance and was about to Apparate (or try, at the very least, for who knew in the midst of this bedlam?) when the fallout from the Prophet offices next to the apothecary meant that one of the front walls was collapsing and about to strike Severus right where he stood. Quick with his wand, he fired a spell to slow, but not stop, the huge collapsing façade, and threw himself out of harm's way. He made solid contact with a body along the way, however, and tackled he or she to the ground with him.

The thud of the plaster came not a second later, and he rolled himself off the unfortunate person who was standing in his way, coughing as dust from the debris arose.

Why did she even leave her flat anymore? The thought raced through her head as she was knocked to the ground by--not even concrete, or something that should have been knocking into her at that moment. No, no. She was being tackled to the ground by Severus Snape, a tackle that did not seem intentional in the slightest.

So not only was she out purchasing some items for the Order's personal potions lab (a tedious task that everyone managed to get out of besides her), not only was she stuck in the heat of August, not only was she getting jostled around by the huge crowds, she also got stuck in the middle of a bloody earthquake and! And, she had managed to stay upright during it, until she was thrown to the ground.

Fuck my life, honestly, she thought, head spinning and suddenly clearing once Snape wasn't crushing her.

Pushing herself up with her elbows, Emmeline's eyes squinted to try and see through the dust, and realized that the mess Snape had jumped to avoid would have probably crushed her to death had he not accidentally moved her out of the way. Maybe her luck was changing, if she didn't remind herself that Snape probably hadn't even noticed she was there. Emmeline coughed, but got to her feet, putting her hand out for Snape.

"Come on," she said, shooting her wand out with her other hand to blow away the dust. Emmeline looked back down at Snape, eyebrows high, "Can you stand?"

Fine, fine, he supposed saving a person or two couldn't be avoided--there was an astounding number of people walking about. But he was on his way out, not on his way in to help others.

"Of course I can stand," he hissed, shooting her a contemptuous look despite the fact that he was sprawled on the ground and looking quite like the wind had been knocked out of him. His free hand searched blindly on the ground for the wand that had been flung from his grasp in his avid casting. This was simply perfect, wasn't it? The whole world turns up to Diagon Alley and he runs into Emmeline Vance. Or tackles, more appropriately, but Snape wasn't so fixated on technicalities at this point.

With a noise of triumph, the thin man pulled himself up (not without some difficulty, but that was irrelevant) and, with a change of plans, started to head back towards the apothecary, hoping to find the Floo network's connection would be undisturbed. Trying to Apparate in the midst of all this madness was just asking for a splinching. Why was it he worked here, when all this alleyway gave him was trouble upon trouble?

He passed Emmeline with nothing so much as a grunt, and that was up to her to take however she pleased.

Lyssandra!

It was the only time in his entire career at Starky's Planetarium that Noah had been glad they had no customers. He and Lyssandra had glad for the quiet; both the kids were asleep up in the flat they're changed into a nursery of sorts, and they were in the gift shop playing Ring Around Uranus.

It's really not as dirty as it sounds.

Noah was just ready to toss the ring toward the levitating blue planet when the first tremor hit, and he felt off the counter with a rather loud thud. He remained on the floor as the rest of the planetarium shook and quaked, and he covered his head to avoid some of the random memorabillia that was falling off the shelves. Either aliens had finally invading, death eaters had taken over Diagon, or they were definitely in the middle of a huge earthquake. Noah's eyes remained shut as he tried to move, but the shaking was too much to make any sort of motion toward Lyssandra, toward---

"TERRY!" he shouted involuntarily, pushing his body up with an adrenaline rush of a panic. Noah stumbled back to the ground, however, but was immediately scrambling back to his feet, "LYSSANDRA, THE KIDS----"

"FUCK," She screeched, following exactly the same train of thought that she assumed Noah was having. Why the fuck would they have put the kids up in the fucking apartment - she was DEFINITELY going to beat Noah within an inch of his life when this was done - once the kids were okay.

Lyssandra pushed herself up too and grabbed Noah's arm, starting to try and drag them both toward the railing that went upstairs, "MOVE. YOUR. ASS."

One second.

Greta had felt her eyes slide shut for literally one second in the middle of a relatively normal news-day, and the entire earth shook.

What did I do?! she thought panickedly as a scream released itself from her mouth and she felt the building ripple. Paintings that had been on the wall rattled, doors were slamming and unslamming, and she felt as though a mountain was growing right from under her seat as her chair rose and tipped back, throwing the shocked girl backwards. Her head, then the rest of her, smacked against the tall bookshelf not far behind her desk, which tilted backwards and began its own fall, until some furniture on the other side stopped it halfway. Jarred, she slid across the shelves and onto the floor, her leg twisting oddly under her weight. Far too dizzy to attempt understanding what was going on, nor what was happening to the other people in the office, the adrenaline rocketing through her system prevented the pain from setting in. Flustered and disoriented, she tried to get up, tried to run, perhaps even tried to see if anyone needed help or if she could otherwise provide assistance for whatever had just rocked the earth, when her leg crumpled beneath her, almost turning on itself when she fell back to the floor. Her heart was starting to race as she had no idea what was going on or what had happened to her, and being so aware of her violently pumping heart was starting to make her nauseous.

"Is there—," she began, head slumped against the crooked shelf, eyes suddenly fighting to stay open, "can someone—I need—HELP!"

For heaven's sake!

Gabriel pressed his hands against the wall for another moment, somehow managing to stay upright throughout the quake. The quake! The earthquake? Here, in Diagon Alley? Gabriel's brow furrowed, not believing for a second that an earthquake had been the actual reason, no, that did not make sense at all. They were being bombed again, that had to be. Gabriel's ears perked at the sound of the wireless that was going over the speakers in the corridors. They were saying it was an earthquake! All of--the Ministry? Oh Christ, that meant St. Mungo's was hit as well, and Rebecca!

Gabriel pushed himself off the wall, glad that his legs hadn't shaken from underneath him, and started to follow the crowd out when he heard the shout for help. He paused, wondering if he'd actually heard it, but---he had to check. Gabriel imagined someone just walking away from Rebecca, and the idea twisted his gut painfully.

"Hello!" he called into the seemingly empty space. They had cleared out so quickly, maybe they had missed someone hidden underneath the mess? Gabriel slowly made his way between the toppled desks and cabinets, hoping that the floor didn't give way beneath him. "Who's there?" Gabriel ducked his head under a fallen bookshelf, and held back a sound of panic at the sight of Greta.

Gabriel straightened. He really should not attempt to move these things in case he hurt her more. He'd read about it, what if the pieces were keeping her body together and he adjusted things the wrong way...Merlin's beard, this was absolutely surreal. Gabriel bent down again and pulled out his wand, muttering a lumos.

"Greta," he called out, waving his wand around. Gabriel dropped to his knees, "You need to tell me what hurts, all right?" She looked ready to pass out, he needed to keep her awake, "Can you do that?"

Berk, Marnie
[info]amelias
2009-08-06 06:51 am UTC (link)
"What the everloving fu---"

Amelia had no idea what had just happened. One second she had been sitting, chatting and having lunch with her husband and sister-in-law, and then the next second it was like the earth had been grabbed up and shaken like a snowglobe. Glasses full of drinks toppled over and spilled, all of the plates and silverware were rattling their way off the edges of tables, and the awning under which the restaurant's guests were sitting began to wobble and strain as if it were about to break loose of the stone.

Without thinking about it, she threw an arm over her head and dove down under the tiny cafe table, instinctively grabbing Marnie's wrist and pulling her down with her. What was this--an earthquake? Why would there be an earthquake in Diagon Alley.. or rather, how? She'd never heard of one before, at least not one this---strong---"MERLIN'S BEARD!"

At that second, the overhang, steel poles and all, came collapsing down on the lunch crowd to a chorus of panicked screams. Amelia pulled Marnie even further under the table with her, and with the other hand reached out to try and find Berk. She thought she'd seen him go under the table as well, but there was little room for three adults, as evidenced by the pain that shot up her left arm from a falling--something--that had likely come down with the awning---a brick, a piece of metal?

She didn't know or care, but bit down on her tongue and winced as she finally grabbed her husband's arm. "What the hell's going on!" she yelled over the chaotic crowd.

Berk went up when everyone else went down. It was his nature, auror training or not. He'd already been lost on the conversation Amelia and Marnie were having, not because he didn't find it interesting (though, now that he thought about it, he couldn't remember what it was, so it was probably a girl thing? Maybe?), but because his eyes had been watching his glass of water with great intensity. None of them were touching the tables, it was a quiet cafe, so the vibrations through the liquid like he was skipping tiny stones across its surface, were very, very confusing to him.

So he went up, when they went down. It sometimes amazed him at how his head clicked on and off into auror mode, but the surprise only lasted half a second, because that's how aurors survived. Berk's arm shot out tensely as he shouted a rapid fire of spells that would slow down the fall of the roof, levitate some pieces into the air, and straighten up things that had fallen. "Erecto!" he shouted, holding his wand out for the spell as he forced the wall back into place. He gritted his teeth, taking a few steps forward to help the spell, and let out a grunt went it finally went back up. Berk panted, dropping down to the ground the moment before Amelia grabbed onto his arm.

Shit. Berk pulled out of her grip and put his wand to her arm, muttering off some healing spells before he looked at Marnie, "Are you all right?" he asked over the noise, not stopping with his quick wand work on Amelia. He had to get them out of there, out of Diagon Alley. Who knew if there would be aftershocks, or even worse, the reactions of the people in the street.

Holy crap, Ralph had absolutely no idea how he had managed to pull off a real patronus, but he actually did because it had definitely been raccoon, not some blurred imagine like before, but a clear cut animal raccoon. If he wasn't so currently terrified, Ralph probably wouldn't been damn proud and patted himself on the back.

But there was no time for that, because now was the time for focusing on what was in front of him. The aftermath of a gigantic earthquake in the middle of London--- Diagon, no less! How bloody insane was that?! Completely planned and executed, he had gathered from some of the other Order members, but still. So many people, in the middle of London.... from his dorm, Ralph hadn't felt much of anything, just the ground shaking bad, and a few things had fallen from his shelf, but-- nothing like the disaster that was here.

Ralph carefully treaded outside the Leaky Cauldron, his hand clenching his wand tightly in his pocket. He had already gone through a few aftershock shakes, and didn't want to take any chances. Besides, for all he knew death eaters were waiting on the other side of the door, getting ready to take over the whole place, so---

Or it would be completely empty.

Feeling a great weight lifted (though not that much.... his girlfriend was still out there somewhere), Ralph began his search."Miranda!" With his wand, he slowly moved shoved chairs and fallen over tables out of the way. Miranda?"

It was dark. There weren't dark places in the Leaky Cauldron, how was it dark?

Miranda had been busy running around, trying to help Mortimer at the bar and at the same time, trying to make sure the floo fireplace was clean, and the real fireplace was clean too, and that required an actual broom because Miranda was really, really shoddy at cleaning spells and would rather do it by hand. So, she'd been digging into the broom closet when the earthquake struck, and had been hurled forward into the small space.

Being hurled into a small, cramped space meant there wasn't much room to avoid smacking into things. Miranda had knocked her head so hard on the back wall of the closet that it immediately brought tears to her eyes and she felt her whole body shake with the pain. They were rolling down her cheeks by the time she dropped to the floor, and it was then that all the bloody equipment that was stored in there toppled onto her. Her mother had been begging her to clean out the closet this whole week, and Miranda wanted to kick herself for being lazy.

The door had shut behind her, and that's why it was dark. Miranda sat in the darkness, feeling that if she moved, everything would just repeat itself and she'd be buried under even more hard and heavy. She didn't know how long she'd been in there when she heard someone calling her name. Were they really? Who would be coming in here to look for her, if not her parents? Or brothers.

Or Ralph!

"Ralph--" she tried to let out, but Miranda coughed up the name and curled into herself. Her chest really hurt, it hurt to talk, it hurt to breathe (that's what that wheezing sound was--). How was he going to find her in here? Miranda's tears struck again and daring herself to be braver, pushed out her leg and kicked at the door weakly. Her legs hurt too.

Today was busy busy busy! Ally almost couldn't keep up with all the kids coming in for school robes and then there was the sale and goodness the day had just begun and she already felt exhausted. Being four months pregnant with twins did that to you. Evil twin, ugh they sucked all the energy out of her.

So when Patrick showed up to visit Ally was beyond happy. They had a lovely chat before Ally clapped her hands together with a brilliant idea. "Patrick! Dearest big brother that I love so much!" So she might be putting him to work, but could you really blame her? She was there all alone and help didn't come in until twelve and she was going to have to be there until five. "Being the strong guy you are, would you help a pregnant girl out and get some of those heavy boxes out of the store room in the back for me? I need to restock some things and I can't lift them. I know you can handle it though." she put on her best pleading pout, knowing that he'd do it for her. She gave him a big smile when he agreed. "You are the best, you must come over now! I'll make you dinner tonight" she said perching herself on the stool behind the counter.

Not long after Patrick disappeared into the back room the rumbling started. Ally gripped the counter as the room began to shake. What was... was this a earthquake? Ally let out a scream as her chair toppled over. She crawled under the counter and waited for the shaking to stop.

Oh god. Patrick was in the store room. She had just sent Patrick into the store room that was filled with boxes and hangers and coat racks and who knows what else. "PATRICK!!" the second the shaking stopped Ally hulled herself on her feet and was running to the back. "PATRICK!!!"

Noise, there was only noise. Static, lots of static. Fuzzy images, too, and Patrick had no idea where he could be. Someone was saying something, loudly and---he opened his mouth to let out a gasp before he opened his eyes. It hurt to open his eyes, but what hurt even more was his chest. His chest really hurt, and with the little strength he could muster, Patrick heaved a great sigh. Something--spit out in front of him, and his chin lolled down to his chest in time to see that the gaping hole in the front of his robes was spewing blood.

Well, that sucked.

Patrick blinked furiously, trying to get his eyes back into focus to figure out what the fuck was stabbing him in the chest. There were robes hanging from the long, metal----was that a bloody robe rack? Did he have a robe rack impaled into his chest? Why would---where was he?

The calling of his name grew louder, and Patrick could only lift his gaze to the figure screaming at him. She---that was...he felt her name at the tip of his tongue, but he could barely open his mouth to try and figure out who she was. He let out another gasp, trying not to breath too hard because apparently, that caused blood to spurt out onto the nice robes.

What. The. Fuck. Was. This. Shit.

Would someone please explain to him how he, Christopher Loftus, had ended up in the middle of the most planned natural disaster the Dark Lord had pulled off to date? Without knowing that it was going to happen! Oh, of course it was obvious, earthquakes of this caliber didn't simply happen by chance in Great Britain--- in London for that matter!

Least to say, Christopher was less than pleased by this development.

Not only had he been completely loyal to the Dark Lord for nine years, but he also had been an extremely significant spy in the Ministry--- was being an Auror death eater not enough to be trusted? How else was he to show absolute obedience through putting his life on the lie every single day? What he did wasn't easy. It had taken years for him to build what the Auror Department was to the Dark Lord today, but apparently none of that mattered.

So one could see how this would put Christopher in anything less than a murderous mood.

His mouth whipped into brutish smile as he recognized the person just a few paces in front of him in the side alley he'd taken a turn in (there were people screaming for help in front of him before, so obviously taking another route was necessary). Sebastian Goldstein. How unfortunate for him. Without warning, Christopher raised his wand and attacked the other man. He smiled crudely as he watched the hex make a perfectly large slash across the back of his brother-in-law.

He had just been entering the Daily Prophet when the earthquake struck, thankfully. Sebastian had managed to avoid any of the falling skyline of Diagon Alley, and had actually gripped onto a little boy who had been thrust from his mother across the street. When the rumbling had stopped, he'd been thanked profusely before the family rushed away, and then he got the message from the Order.

Tornadoes? Sebastian felt a frantic pain in his chest at the thought of Mackenzie at home with Anthony, but--how could anyone know he was in the Order outside of the actual members? No, Sebastian knew that the original members were in constant fear of getting found because their names had been leaked, but he hadn't been, not yet, right? There was no way, he hadn't even done anything! He hadn't even sent out a patronus!

Oh, he should probably respond to that.

His duck (that always made him grin) was halfway formed with his message when a searing pain raced down his back, causing Sebastian to let out a roar and stumble into an adjacent alley between two buildings. He fell into some trash cans, groaning in pain as he watched his duck soar off.

Gleny had no idea why she had decided to leave the WWN, but she had, and that decision left her foolishly exposed in the middle of Diagon. It had seemed like a good idea at the time, to get out of the shaking building, but now that she was away from work and people that she actually cared about (how was she to know if everyone was alright!), she felt... well, stupid.

Though it wasn't completely her fault! There had been lots of people stampeding out, and she had gotten swept into the crowd, so by the time she'd been able to free herself another shake was starting and... the deep desire to know exactly where she was overwhelmed her, and for a few moments Gleny stood with her hands on her face, desperately trying not to break down.

She was relatively fine! Or at least--- well her hip felt like it was on fire, as well as her side, but she was too afraid to look at what could have possibly happened to her to know for sure. There was no blood on her robes, and that was good enough to start walking and help anyone she saw. She stood silently under a overhang, her thoughts going to Tristan and Gideon. The would be, they would be fine of course? Where they were living now was so far away from London, and not even the Order was exactly sure where they were, so there was no reason to get anxious over their conditions yet. Besides, Gideon usually stayed home with Tristan these days, barely---

The sound of rumbling and crackling from above made Gleny's head snap up quickly, losing her train of thought. It only took a few seconds for her to realize that the sound was coming from the roof's sliding bricks.

This building was falling apart. It was literally falling apart in front of her very eyes, and all Gleny could do was stand there, mesmerized, right in the path of destruction. The thought that she had a wand that would stop this only came later, once she had already covered her hands over her head and ducked low to the ground. A last thought flitted through her mind before she was knocked unconscious: she really should have sent a patronus to the Order.

A day off would be good, Derek had decided. A day off was a chance for him to get some fresh air, clear his head, and just escape from life for a day. Not that he didn't love his job and the release it afforded him, or the fact that he was no longer coming home to a drab, empty flat at the end of the day, but sometimes… the need for escape was overwhelming. Work was getting increasingly stressful over the last few weeks, not to mention tasks for the Order, and Derek had been putting in overtime, as a means of cautiously giving Vinny his space for the rocky period his friend must have been going through.

But today, no patrols, no underground groups of rebellion to bother with, none of it. Just a quiet day to himself.

Or it would have been, had the fates not been constantly conspiring against the poor man.

On the streets of Muggle London, not far from the Leaky Cauldron, which was his eventual destination, Derek noted that traffic of the vehicular and foot kind were abundant—more so than usual. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see a flash of blonde hair—ordinarily not anything to concern him, but it was this precise shade of blonde (nearly platinum, thus, very easy to pick out of a crowd) that was unmistakable. This might have been cause for Derek to walk right on by, had he not noticed the girl about to step onto the street, right in path of an oncoming lorry, and one that was showing no signs of slowing down, at that.

Derek's mind had not even processed what was happening as instinct took over, his size cutting an easy path through the floods of people as he as fast as he could. He pulled his wand from the back of his jeans' pocket as he sped up, but no spell of any kind was coming to mind—all he could see was the ugly collision that would be taking place if he didn't hurry.

The horn blared as he dove into the street, knocking Meredith out of the way, into the other lane. It braked suddenly, the driver tossing out words that undoubtedly contained many expletives that drowned out as the tires squealed and he took off again.

"Idiot!" Derek yelled, trying to move them before the break in traffic disappeared. "The signal was still red!"

"Don't call me an idiot!"

The words came out of her mouth in an offended tone before she had even realized what had happened, much less who had said them.

Meredith Fielding had been out for a calming walk downtown. A nice walk, an escape from the depressing atmosphere of home and the friends who still, months later, had not stopped asking if she was okay every five minutes. Didn't they know how ungodly sick she got of that? Didn't they all know how much better things would be if she didn't have to be constantly reminded that there was something that she should be not feeling okay about? She knew, alright. When you felt--knew you would feel for the rest of your life--that half of you was missing, it was pretty fucking abundantly clear that there was something not okay. So---a walk. Barely having escaped the house before her mother started weeping over the photos on the mantle again, she was out for a walk.

Which did not fucking include being thrown to the god damn ground by some dickhead stranger!

"The signal was still red!"

Oh.

The agitation washed off her face as Meredith glanced at the car speeding off. Merlin, had she really almost just done that? It was ironic that now, after the fact, her heart had begun to pound with the adreneline of the close call with---well, with something she didn't really need to think about.

"Sorry---thank you," she muttered, finally tearing her eyes off the road and towards the man who'd saved her. "I guess I---oh."

Wasn't that just her luck.
