Corner/Englewood Wedding! For New Year's Eve!
Getting married was absolutely terrifying. No matter how smoothly Gabriel proceeded through the planning, the discussions, and the actual event, he was holding back getting sick the second he could catch a moment to himself. He knew he didn't love Rachel yet, which might be the reason why he was finding himself so nervous as they sat at the head table of their reception, but he did honestly---he did honestly believe that he could fall in love with this woman. She was fiery with a mind of her own, and though some people might be irritated by it, Gabriel actually appreciated the way she took control of things. He had always been a bit of a follower, and it was easy to agree with Rachel because her reasoning simply made sense.

The reception did look fantastic. Gabriel couldn't believe it was all put together within two short months, but then again he was learning that Rachel was a woman who set her goals and refused to leave them unfinished. Maybe he should look at that as a good thing; surely someone who did not want to get married would not have put so much effort into the ceremony? Or she simply wanted to throw the most beautiful wedding of them all, simply because she could. He didn't know, and didn't mind not finding out as long as they remained content with each other.

He did find her very interesting, however, and that was the first thing a Ravenclaw looked for in a spouse. Maybe all of his concerns were for naught, and it was simply wedding day jitters. His parents had been arranged in a similar manner, and they were still quite happily married (and sometimes nauseatingly sweet about it, too). Gabriel turned and smiled at Rachel, pushing his chair out and offering his hand, "Would you like to dance?"

A chorus of glasses clinging supported Gabriel, and he flushed slightly at all the attention that was on them, once again.

She sat stiffly in her chair at the back of the reception hall, staring straight into nothing. Her thoughts were void of any sort of celebration, and Rebecca wondered how long her mother would force her to be here. She'd only shown up for Gabriel, who had actually advised her to stay home, but she knew she would regret (when she could feel again) missing his wedding.

It had only been three days. The funeral hadn't even occurred. There was no sense of closer, there was nothing that Rebecca could look to as a sign to start living again. She would never have thought she'd find herself so utterly miserable about a boy, but this was--Euan. They had only been together a short time, but she had...she'd seen a future with him, she was picking china patterns in her head, she had names and it was silly when he was alive but now it was completely destroyed. He was---

Tears immediately stung her eyes and Rebecca excused herself from her aunt and uncle as she could not show her emotions. Part of her was nearly glad for all the etiquette lessons that had been shoved down her throat, because she would never have been able to compose herself for as long as she had. She rushed out the doors as inconspicuously as possible and tried to remember where the washing rooms were, but couldn't. Rebecca pressed her hand to her chest to try and prevent the onslaught of tears, but she couldn't, and dropped down into a chair, burying her face in her hands.

Oh, his security detail had not been happy when he'd explained things to them. In fact, the first sixteen times that he pleaded with them to bring him to the Corner/Englewood wedding, they had blatantly rejected him. It wasn't until the seventeenth time where he'd listed off the character flaws of each of the Aurors in full that they had caved in and allowed him to go. Of course he'd had to pick up a tuxedo, although he felt rather ridiculous wearing it underneath of the hooded cloak they'd insisted that he wear.

He probably looked like a bloody Death Eater (ironic, no?) with the thing on, lurking outside the doors of the hall and scanning around nervously. Could you honestly blame him? He'd been attacked and he'd seen the man. He was a little sore from the onslaught, true, but his real concern and worry had been for Rebecca. How unfair it was that she couldn't know he was alive until -- well, until today, right now. His eyes lit up as he spotted her barreling out of the hall, but when she collapsed into the chair he just winced.

He was so apologizing about this for years...for multiple reasons. Euan cleared his throat as he knelt down to clasp Rebecca's hands, hoping she'd see him despite the fact he was partially shaded underneath the hood.

"You know how I hate to see you cry, Rebecca."

She'd thought it was Gabriel coming after her. Her brother had done nothing but hover over her with every free moment he had for the past few days, and while she was grateful, Rebecca just wanted to be able to cry on her own. She needed to cry, it made her feel something, so he had to leave!

"Honestly!" she let out in a frustrated tone, nearly cutting off the whispered words from the cloaked figure. Rebecca stiffened as the voice rang in her ears, and she nearly recoiled away in shock. It couldn't be. Her shoulders hunched as she leaned forward and she wrenched her hands out of--his--to push her fingers under the hood to graze her fingers along the side his face.

Rebecca tried to open her mouth to speak, but for the first time in her life found herself at a loss for words. This was...this was Euan kneeling in front of her. This wasn't supposed to be happening, he wasn't supposed to be here, he was...why...how...

"I love you!" she blurted as tears sprang from her eyes. Rebecca lurched forward and threw her arms around Euan, dropping off the chair and basically landing on him. If this was a delirious dream then she wanted to take advantage of it. "E-E-Euan!"

He nearly toppled over when Rebecca threw her arms around him, but managed somehow to keep himself (and Rebecca) up. Oh, it was such a relief to have the girl wrapped around him again. He nuzzled the side of her shoulder for a brief moment and then sighed, pressing a kiss to her temple.

"I love you too, Rebecca. So very much." Which was the problem, really. "I need -- to go away, I don't know for how long. I need to let people think that I'm gone forever and change my name because I saw that Death Eater's face -- and, well." He cleared his throat, furrowing his brows.

The ring wouldn't come out of his pocket, and it was certainly not terribly fancy but it was a ring, "I was hoping you would consider coming with me. I -- I apologize for this being so quick."

This was far too much for her to comprehend all at once. Her eyes darted all over his face, trying to capture every last centimeter of Euan before she woke up, still believing that this was a dream her depression had forced upon her. He said he'd loved her, and that he needed to go away, all in the same breath. That was incomprehensible, and unfair to throw at her in the few seconds they'd been reunited, and Rebecca sucked in a breath as she attempted not to pass out from everything that was happening.

But he had just pulled out a ring and asked her to go with him. Rebecca was absolutely sure she would have passed out had she not taken that breath. It felt like everything around them had been silenced, not even the music from the party able to breach her ears. He was--proposing...many things! He was proposing marriage, obviously, and he was proposing that she leave her life here to go into hiding with him because a death eater most likely had Euan on a very short list of targets.

Dear God, her life had suddenly become much more interesting than she had ever wished it to be.

Her hands dropped down from Euan's face to clasp her hands around his, staring down at the ring (the ring!) that was literally going to change her life forever. Rebecca's eyes darted back to the doors of the wedding reception, thinking of her family, her brother especially---it was strange how easily the answer came.

"What will our new name be?" she asked softly.

"So--" Because logic said that if she was asking about what their new name was, that meant, "-- so you will, then? I know that it's terrible of me to come and ask now, but they said that I had to leave today and I didn't want to -- leave." Without having her with him, at least.

Funny what a near-death experience could do for a person in terms of putting things into perspective. Yes, he wanted to be respected for his work and among his peers, but the fact was that he wanted to be with Rebecca more and he couldn't bear the thought of not ever seeing her again.

"Abercrombie," he finally managed to get out, glancing over to the doors of the wedding with some concern. "I -- we really do need to go, though -- they're going to come over here and spoil the mood, I can tell."

"Abercrombie," she repeated with a nod, getting up to her feet with Euan because they had to leave. She was going to be Rebecca Abercrombie. Oh, she had always known that Rebecca Pamplemoss sounded a bit funny in her daydreams (not that she'd ever tell Euan that!). Her heart was racing around in circles inside of her and she grabbed onto his hand, stopping him from pulling away, just for a second.

"You need to put the ring on me," she said, playfully scolding, "Come on, while we walk." She could definitely do two things at once. Oh, this was the last thing she ever in her life she imagined herself doing, but it felt so right in this very moment. Hopefully it still felt right in the morning, but Rebecca was sure it would.

Hmm. She wondered if they would let her at least take some of her clothes with her--that might be a bit much to ask, however.

"If you want someone to pack a bag for you--" He smoothed his hand through his hair and then nodded, "I think that's a very good idea, yes." He picked the ring out of the box after a try or two and slipped it on her finger, oh-so glad for the auto-sizing charm he'd gotten them to put on it.

Then he slid his hand down into hers and gave it a squeeze. "I'm so sorry that I couldn't tell you this from the beginning, but I was all tied up in red tape and I couldn't just -- they really wouldn't let me leave."

Rebecca didn't hear a word he said after he put the ring on her finger. She stared for a moment before turning into Euan and grabbing the collar of his shirt to pull him down for a proper 'just-engaged' snog. It felt like she hadn't kissed him in years when it had only been days. Days that she had spent tirelessly reminding herself that she'd never be able to kiss him again. She felt revived, it was a beautiful, glorious feeling.

"I'm just so happy you came back for me," she said when she finally allowed them to part. Rebecca pressed her forehead hard against his, her throat closing along with the tears threatening to spill from her eyes. Merlin, she knew they had to leave, but she wished she could stand here, like this, forever. It was the happiest she'd ever been in her life, she didn't want it to end.
