Corner/Englewood Wedding! For New Year's Eve!
Getting married was absolutely terrifying. No matter how smoothly Gabriel proceeded through the planning, the discussions, and the actual event, he was holding back getting sick the second he could catch a moment to himself. He knew he didn't love Rachel yet, which might be the reason why he was finding himself so nervous as they sat at the head table of their reception, but he did honestly---he did honestly believe that he could fall in love with this woman. She was fiery with a mind of her own, and though some people might be irritated by it, Gabriel actually appreciated the way she took control of things. He had always been a bit of a follower, and it was easy to agree with Rachel because her reasoning simply made sense.

The reception did look fantastic. Gabriel couldn't believe it was all put together within two short months, but then again he was learning that Rachel was a woman who set her goals and refused to leave them unfinished. Maybe he should look at that as a good thing; surely someone who did not want to get married would not have put so much effort into the ceremony? Or she simply wanted to throw the most beautiful wedding of them all, simply because she could. He didn't know, and didn't mind not finding out as long as they remained content with each other.

He did find her very interesting, however, and that was the first thing a Ravenclaw looked for in a spouse. Maybe all of his concerns were for naught, and it was simply wedding day jitters. His parents had been arranged in a similar manner, and they were still quite happily married (and sometimes nauseatingly sweet about it, too). Gabriel turned and smiled at Rachel, pushing his chair out and offering his hand, "Would you like to dance?"

A chorus of glasses clinging supported Gabriel, and he flushed slightly at all the attention that was on them, once again.

Chester refrained from laughing as Bess stumbled over herself trying to get away. Like she would be able to get that far if he truly wanted to catch her. Then she went and practically threw herself at her date, who just returned. How disgusting.

He eyed Drystan up, he might actually throw a kink into things. Oh well, it would definitely make things more interesting.

"No problem here. I was just collecting on a dance Bess owed me before heading out. It seems as though that our topic of discussion has gotten her a bit emotional. I was going to stay, but now that I see that she is in--capable hands I think it's best I go." He wasn't stupid. Chester did know when it was best to make an exit. It wasn't as if he was going to sit there and make idle chit chat with the guy glaring at him and Bess sobbing into his shoulder. That would just be him begging to get caught. It wouldn't take long for other people to notice what had transpired, so staying to provoke the couple even more was out, as much fun as that would have been.

Chester smirked at the two of them before turning to leave them be, "you do have a lovely evening now."

On instinct, Drystan caught the sobbing Bess in his arms, holding her closely as his mind tried to make sense of the events that had just transpired. He wasn't at all certain what they had been discussing when he'd gotten there, or exactly why this man was here, but there was one thing he was certain of, and that was that the retreating man was none other than Chester Scabior. Or, as Drystan was better acquainted with him, the current tormentor of his favorite members of the Zeller family.

A look down at the golden head of his broken down girlfriend was all the motivation he needed. With just as little explanation as he had for the anger he'd felt as he'd closed in on the two of them, Drystan extricated himself from Bess's grasp carefully and strode forward, placing a hand on Chester's shoulder as he caught up with him. Using the hand to pull Chester back in Drystan's direction, he drove his free hand, now a tightly balled fist, straight into the other man's face.

Chester didn't even know what was happening until his face was knocked sideways and his nose was bleeding. He alternating looking at his hand that he used to wipe some of the blood coming from and Drystan with utter disbelief.

The shock only lasted for a second before returning the punch with full force. Like hell he was going to walk away the only man bleeding.

He pulled out his wand ready to fire of a rapid string of curses. "I seriously suggest you rethink fucking with me." He threaten, giving him a warning before he seriously considered killing him at this wedding. Rachel would have a fit.

This--this was not at all how she imagined her first public outing with Drystan. Bess whirled around when he left her side, staring in complete shock as he swung at Chester. She winced greatly at the crunch that was heard, and for a split second grinned. Oh, had she wanted to do that for a long, long time. Drystan would surely be getting rewarded for that.

But her joy at seeing Chester getting socked was completely destroyed at seeing him retaliate against Drystan. Bess let out a cry and rushed forward, not hesitating in jumping in between the two men even though Chester had pulled his wand. Oh--

"STOP!" she shouted, pressing back into Drystan and putting her hands out to Chester. This was something out of her nightmares, honestly. This man was never going to leave her alone, like he had some sort of claim on her after he'd completely abandoned her! Bess felt sick at the idea that she'd been so eager to be with Chester, and her face grew hot,

"Get away from us, Chester!" she demanded through her clenched teeth and tears, "Just---leave us alone!" Bess sent him one last glare before turning and looking up at Drystan with a pleading expression, tugging on his arm to leave.

What a way to ring in the bloody New year.

Derek was on his way back from the loo when, out of the corner of his eye, a sudden movement caught his attention. Peering in that direction, Derek was just in time to see Chester Scabior, whom he intensely disliked, haul off and sock Quidditch star Drystan Fawcett, whom he was nearly certain he dislike, right in the face. Then he saw Bess Zeller throwing herself in the middle, and looking as though she was trying her best to separate the two and send Chester on his way. It might have worked, Derek thought, had the Quidditch player not duched around Bess and thrown a punch of his own. This exchange of blows continued for a moment, before Derek realized several things A) Chester was an asshole B) Drystan seemed like an asshole C) but Bess didn't seem to have a problem with him D) Bess did have a problem with Chester and C) This was Rachel's wedding reception, and if she caught wind of any of this, all parties involved and standing near would be eviscerated.

With that information, Derek did the only sensible thing one might do in a situation like that, and interfered.

"Oi! All right, break it—break it up—" He threw his burly self into the fray, extracting the still-fighting Chester as best he could. And considering he'd always wanted to do the following, an indescribable wave of pleasure fell over him.

"Mr. Scabior," he began, not without some cheer in his voice, "I believe you're now under arrest for assault and disturbance of the peace. I'm quite certain I shall have to take you in, now."

In his heart of hearts, Derek rather hoped Chester would resist arrest.

He shot Bess a quizzical look, then glanced quickly at the recovering Drystan, trying to ascertain whether or not she still required his assistance, and if she was all right.

"Derek Dobbs, you are a Godsend!" Bess let out, ignoring the glares she knew were coming from the other two men. Well, he was, there had been no way she was going to stop Drystan or Chester! Bess quickly explained the way Chester had threatened her and grabbed her to the hitwizard (blushing hard and stuttering a bit because she knew Drystan could hear and that made her feel--cheap), and Chester was magically handcuffed and taken away.

It would have been a really glorious feeling if he hadn't just ruined their evening, and probably her entire relationship with Drystan. Who would want to deal with a woman who had crazy men like that hounding her at all times? Bess had ranted about Chester enough times for Drystan to be aware of his pitiful existence, but this was the first time she actually had to confront how big of an issue he was, in front of Drystan. She was glad that he was here, of course, but it may have been too early to play knight-in-shining-armor.

"Let's get you home," she sighed, reaching up and grazing a bruise on Drystan's cheek. Bess felt terrible that she was the reason behind it, and held onto him tightly when they disapparated out of the party and to his flat. Bess didn't wait a second after they landed to head into Drystan's bathroom for a first aid kit, and came back with pain relieving potions and bandages. She'd patched him up before, because she was...insistent that way, but those times had been because of quidditch and Drystan stubbornly ignoring the mediwizards there.

This had been because of her, and as she knelt into the mattress beside him to position herself to help, Bess felt the guilt rise up and she dropped her hands.

"I'm---so sorry, Drystan...I didn't want to talk to him, I hate him and he just---he won't leave me alone and..." she shook her head, shoulders slumping, "I understand if you don't want to---" Bess' voice caught in her throat, and she waved her hand around the room. She felt like this was her bedroom, now, after all the time she'd spent here, "--do this anymore. Us."

His face was smarting something awful. Whatever other awful things might (and should) be said about Chester Scabior, the power of his knuckles ought not to be underestimated, the bony bastard. Not that he'd dreamed of admitting, on the off chance that Bess had actually wished to stay longer at the wedding reception, but he was quite happy to have escaped off to his own flat, and manage to keep the company of his date. And, he mused, it also helped that both children had been sent off to Penelope, though he wouldn't be surprised if Bess felt like punching him once or twice, given his testosterone-ruled display. Remembering one or two well-placed blows, Drystan distended his jaw experimentally, to see whether or not there was any extreme damage done. In the middle of this, he glanced at Bess in some surprise as she blathered on something about not wanting to do this.

He didn't understand.

"What in Circe's name are you talking about?" Drystan asked, steadying his hands on her waist as a means of keeping her in his direction. "Do you—think I'm mad, about this whole—Chester pillock thing?"

Bess gaped, her lips moving to find words but failing. Yes, that was what she was saying, but she was starting to question her thoughts at his expression. "...you're not?"

Her hands drifted up to his face, having abandoned the bandages during the midst of her initial rambling. Bess still felt like shaking after the whole ordeal, but she cupped Drystan's face gently in her hands and examined him. For bruises, cuts, but mostly to try to get a full understanding of why he wasn't freaked out by the events of the night and taking things so calmly. Calm, outside of the punches he'd thrown.

"It's just hard to believe I've found a guy who's willing to deal with the madness that is my life, for the rest of his," That sounded far too serious, and Bess had no idea where her mind had been going but it certainly was not something she should be thinking or saying (but it did feel nice). Bess stuttered, "--his...relationship," she tried to fix, blushing madly, "With...me. For however long that may be."

Drystan snorted indelicately. "I'm not sure if you remember this, or not, but we did meet whilst I was trying to protect myself and my reputation against a crazed fan who accused me of fathering her unborn child. Madness, well… I'm not wholly unused to it." He offered her a crooked smile. He liked how that blush looked on her. Regardless, it wasn't her fault that Chester had turned out to be an incredibly abusive man. And while he fully acknowledged that children needed both parents, in order to have the best chance at a normal, healthy childhood, he didn't feel that Bess needed Chester in Sadie's life, at all. Some of those thoughts, he believed, might have stemmed from the fact that—well, he was here now. As cocky as that might have sounded, he fancied himself a good enough stand-in.

"Though, now that you bring the subject up… how long would you like that to be, exactly?" he asked, tone serious, but light, as he awaited her answer.

"We never did get a response from her..." Bess mused with a funny face, pushing closer between his legs as their conversation took a much more serious tone.

She felt her heart lose its pace in her chest, her fingers gripping onto the collar of his dress robes. How long did she want to be with Drystan? To be honest, Bess had felt like they were in the sync of dating, and being in a relationship, for nearly two months now. Maybe that was adult of them, being able to basically live with one another (honestly! She had come to his flat after picking up Sadie nearly everyday since his parents had died) without the sexual element the typical 'romantic' relationship was supposed to have. And, of course, when they'd finally given into the sexual part of the whole thing last week--it had been definitely worth the wait.

And...she felt like she was at home with Drystan. Bess didn't have any questions about where he might be, or who he was with, because he was blunt and honest with her about everything (nearly everything; she'd caught on about his invitation to the Halloween Ball). Bess could be who she was without feeling like a nuisance, and neither of them minded putting the other back into their place when they were (ha, and she was, a lot). She smiled and kissed him sweetly, moving to sit on his knee.

"As long as you'll have me, I suppose," she responded, because she could not see herself letting go of this man.

"Oh, that's a highly insensible answer," Drystan told her, wrapping one arm around her, as he held one of her hands with his other. It might have been considered ludicrous, considering they weren't technically even in a relationship. But considering the entire six months, or so, that he'd known her, it was difficult to imagine going about life without her.

"I imagine I'll have you for a very, very long time, then."

Now her heart couldn't stop and Bess thought it was going to burst out of her chest and kill her. The implications of their words were quite serious, and she should attempt to discuss them further with Drystan but...all she wanted to do was kiss him, for a very, very long time.

Bess pushed forward and forced herself not to sigh happily into his mouth. She wondered if his face may be too sore for this, but until he stopped her, she was going to snog this man senseless.
