Eliza was finding it much easier to stay silent and let Dedalus do all the talking. She had never had a baby before, so why should she have anything to say to the healers, who obviously knew what they were doing? Nope, she was going to keep her mouth tightly shut, no matter how much she wanted to let out moans of pain. Moans of consistent pain, as her contractions were growing closer and closer. This was good, though, because that meant Eric would be here soon, and she wouldn't be a whale anymore, and they would have their baby boy. This was good, and she wanted nothing else than for it to go as smoothly as possible, so she would remain calm.

Her hand's grip on her husband's hand was telling another story, however. Eliza hadn't let go of Dedalus' hand since he appeared in their flat hours before. She refused to let go of him and even if she had to only hold onto a finger, she was not letting go. They could allow her that, right? She was about to have a baby, she should be able to hold her husband's hand.

Right now her hand was clenching Dedalus' in pain as another contraction hit. Her healer had told her she wouldn't be able to start pushing for just a bit more and right now it was just her and Dedalus in the delivery room, biding their time.

His hand gave hers a gentle squeeze, though it was probably hardly noticed because of how tight her grip was. His eyes searched her face, trying to figure out what was going on in her head without actually going into her head to find out. It had been a while, since he had listened in on her thoughts, since he knew it was an invasion of privacy…but then there were times like these, when he wanted to desperately help her, but he didn’t know how. Was it wrong for him to want to know what she was thinking? It was something he struggled with on a daily basis, but today…today was different.

Brown eyes blinked as she shrugged her shoulders, chewing nervously at the inside of his cheek as he watched her, though they widened ever so slightly when she finally spoke…and then broke down. He quickly moved from his seat to sit on the edge of the bed with her, never letting go of her hand. She wasn’t the only one who didn’t want to let go. His free hand moved to let his finger tips gently touch her arm before he carefully wrapped it around wrist to bring her own hand away from her face, so he could see her. Once that was done, he caressed her cheek, his thumb brushing away the tears that were forming…though part of him was glad to see them, only because now he knew she wasn’t semi-catatonic anymore.

“Five is good.” He said with an assuring nod of his head, his mouth curving into the sort of smile someone gave when they were just as nervous about something, but was trying to be supportive. “You’re almost there, baby…this is what you’ve been waiting for, remember? This is what we’ve both been waiting for.” He moved so that the back of his fingers brushed down her cheek, still catching some of her tears on his skin. “Everything is okay…think of Eric.”

Eliza pushed forward and pressed her forehead hard into Dedalus' as another contraction hit, and she tried to soothe herself with his words. She trusted him so much, with everything, but it was so hard to let the words relax her when there was so much going on. There was Eric, there was Dedalus, there was their marriage, she had to worry about work, there was the Order and the war! As much as she wanted to focus on her family, it was impossible to ignore the rest of the world around them.

Hell, her family had been hurt during this war. Eliza could imagine her brother pacing like a madman down in the waiting room, hoping that no one commented on his scars. It was terrifying to think that they were going to bring a baby into a world like this, and Eliza knew it was going to be so much harder than all the happy times they had dreamed and talked about.

Eliza didn't pull away from Dedalus, but saw her healer come back into the room, looking ready to go. This was it? This was it. She took a few deep breaths, realizing that she had no choice but to step into motherhood and all that came with it.

"Are you ready?" she whispered to Dedalus, because she needed to actually hear him say that he was ready for all this responsibility, to be able to accept that she was too.
