Eliza
“….Healer Diggle?

Dedalus grunted as a way of recognizing that someone was calling to him from the doorway of the on call room, though he couldn’t place who it belonged to. He was half asleep, with his arms folded over his eyes to keep out the minimal amount of light that had entered the room when the door had opened, turning over onto his side to face the wall a bit. He had a pounding migraine that he had only just taken something for, seeing how he had been suffering through it for the last couple of hours while with a patient. He didn’t like becoming dependant on them, and because he was a healer, he thought it was irresponsible of him to not practice what he preached to those he prescribed things for.

These late nights were taking their toll on him though, and having people’s thoughts floating around his head all day in addition to his own never helped keep his stress level low. Thankfully things were much better now than they were back in Hogwarts, when he had no idea what he could do, or how to control it after he did. He had gotten a much better grasp on it since then, though when he was extremely tired he often times caught a snippet of someone’s thoughts in passing.

“Um…I know you told me not to disturb you sir, but you have someone here to see you.”

A visitor? He furrowed his brows, and dropped his arms to look towards the door, though he immediately regretted it when he was blinded by light, since his eyes had never adjusted and his head was still pounding.

He obeyed the orders without protest, thinking that if she wanted him to get up for whatever reason, she wouldn’t have told him not to. Knowing now that he obviously didn’t need to get up and sprint out of the hospital to deal with some catastrophe – that had been the old song and dance back when you-know-who was still alive, and his soldiers were killing without rhyme or reason. That was how it seemed, at least.

He would reach out his hand to help her down onto the bed, shifting his weight to give her more room, laying on his hip, now propping himself up with his elbow as his other hand pinched at the bridge of his nose. The least he could do was at least try to pretend he wasn’t as uncomfortable as he actually was. He was used to playing things down, back when he would come home from a night of dueling death eaters when Eliza had no idea about the Order. He had learned how to mask bruises, and heal cuts and wounds even before he had access to them by working at Mungos.

Listening to the explanation of where their son was eased a lot of the worry that he had when she initially walked into the room, knowing now that he was indeed safe and sound with their close friends. He dropped his hand when he heard her rustling through her bag, noting the items she was pulling out with a great deal of interest. He managed a tired smirk as he reached forward to grab one of the pillows, once again following her instructions by dropping down onto the cot so he was laying on his side, his arm now tucked beneath his pillow, making himself more comfortable. Once the quilt was over him, he reached out his hand for hers, hoping to pull her down to sit back down onto the thin mattress with him.

“You don’t need to fuss over me like this, love…”

He said the words as his thumb brushed over the back of her hand – a silent way of saying ‘thank you’, so she didn’t think he was being unappreciative. He just didn’t want to be another child that she thought she needed to take care of.

Eliza pushed herself under the quilt, taking care to lie down next to Dedalus, glad that her belly was mostly out to the front, and not giving her more of a width. They joked that you couldn't tell she was pregnant from the back, and it made for sleeping in these little cots much easier to do. Her free hand sat on the top of her stomach and she turned her head to face her husband.

"I'm not fussing," Eliza said, giving him a pointed look, "I know you're willing to sleep here and be uncomfortable for as long as it takes to get your work done. You could be just be like every other healer and go home when your shift ends, but you're not."

Her hand reached out to push his hair back; it had grown long with his tiresome days and it reminded her of how he used to wear it at Hogwarts. School seemed like so long ago, so many things had changed and happened. But look, they'd made it. Not many people could say that. It broke Eliza's heart to think about their lost friends, but she could appreciate that she and Dedalus and Eric had made it through the war.

"You're not like every other healer, and that's what makes you one of the best," she finished softly, smiling, "And you deserve to have a good sleep with your own pillow, and your own blanket, and your very own wife." Eliza patted his cheek lightly, happy to be here.
