the lofty "axebanger" brookstanton ([info]incharge) wrote in [info]valesco,
He braced his arm flat against the wall and pressed his forehead to it, closing his eyes and breathing deeply. They had made a sensible decision in staying away from one another. Being entwined in a corner at some public event, no matter how dark the corner, was not in keeping with that decision.

Axe couldn't say what had propelled him to come tonight. He'd made as sizeable a donation as he could manage, then spent a considerable amount of time roaming aimlessly, avoiding people he had no wish to speak to (all of them). Rose had appeared, he had seen her from the corner of his eye. They'd locked gazes, and…

Rose had to concentrate on her friends, and Axe needed no reminders about the love lost between he and they. He remembered all to well the problems that had arisen amidst some of his own teammates upon learning he had been involved with Rose. Though Axe knew he was playing on borrowed time, he intended to bring the Kestrels back up to the top for as long as he could. That wasn't possible with a rift among players.

There was also, he supposed, the obvious differences between Rose and he as people, and that they were undoubtedly terribly suited for each other. Axe loathed emotional entanglements, which encompassed all people and the relationships they insisted on forging between themselves, when Rose had uprooted her vacation without a thought to be with a friend in need. Try as he might, however, he could not keep his mind from drifting back to the blissful weeks they had spent together where none of those differences had seemed to matter.

But seclusion on a distant paradise was not anything comparable to their real lives on the bustling isle of Britain.

"An idiotic thing," he said, letting out a harsh laugh. Axe opened his eyes and turned his head slightly so his gaze rested on Rose. "I do not know."
