Rian didn't know what he was doing here, except that he'd was here in place of his father a family duty that was met with uncomfortable dress robes and a mostly dateless evening. His position at the Ministry wouldn't hurt for showing up, either. He'd been blessedly okay with most of his friends being healthy and the ones who'd gotten sick were thankfully all better now. There was nothing like visiting your friend or (ex)girlfriend's kid in the hospital.
Only now that he was here, his quiet nature was at odds with his need to make a good show of a donation and family support, for those who had gotten better and also for those who hadn't. It wasn't difficult to find to find a drink and make his way back to his assigned seating. He'd wait through dinner and whatever speeches were to be heard before ducking out in time to escape dessert and any more awkward standing around
It wasn't that he was shy, he would just prefer to have the book he'd shrunk and tucked in his pocket that was subsequently stolen by his mother, who had come over to help him with his tie. She encouraged him to mingle and not just stick himself in a corner with a muggle paperback, well here he was only doing one of those two things. He was contemplating reading through the menu one last time when he heard his name called. Rian turned in that direction, giving a polite smile and a greeting, "Hello, hi."
