Holding onto the strap of her bag, Therese examined the entrance to the alley that led to Knockturn Alley. Her toe dug into the ground as her leg rocked back and forth, taking her next steps into consideration. There was never a good tale to tell when you entered Knockturn Alley, but it was really her only option. She liked to consider herself a woman who could take on her own adventures, but there was always a strange, nearly howling breeze that came out of Knockturn.

Her shampoo was not that important, was it?

It sounded silly even thinking it! But! Matilda Rowle had always provided her with a special brand that was widely regarded amongst the veela population, something Therese had believed would cause her hair to fall out the moment the concoction touched her scalp. Therese had very little veela blood, but her mother had always commented that her hair was a gift from her ancestors. Right. In any case, the shampoo (and conditioner!) had been something she'd sworn by since leaving Hogwarts, and--she felt a twisting guilt to use something other than the brand that Matilda had found her for.

Merlin, this was a stupid argument she was having with only herself. She was a grown woman, a former Slytherin! There was nothing to be nervous about. Therese straightened her shoulders and took the first few steps into Knockturn. She lifted her chin; she'd be in and out, that was all. People came in and out of here all the time.

This little errand would go perfectly fine.

He did a double-take when the lady fluffed his hair, a note of censure in her voice. Did he know her?

Worse yet, had he slept with her and then not remembered her? The thought had him breaking out into a cold sweat that a group of bloodthirsty thugs had failed to summon. He didn't make a habit of it; it had only happened a handful of times, under extenuating circumstance, he really didn't—

—No, she was… helping him?

His glance darted back and forth from either end of the street, noting the disturbance Twitch's men were causing, asking (or rather, demanding) of people if they had seen someone resembling his description. Nicodemo supposed putting two and two together, the wizard hastening away with the ensuing pursuants, was probably inevitable.

Which meant she was being a rather good sport, considering there was a good possibility she thought her life was in danger, and also that the tattered robes he'd shrugged on were perfumed with eau de pisse and numerous other intermingling stenches. Even his seasoned nose wrinkled upon closer inspection.

"Love me, I suppose," he said, dolefully. "At the very least," Nicodemo eyed one of the wizards nearing where they stood, grabbing bystanders and prodding convenient hiding spaces. He tugged his hood up and started to slowly pull her away, hoping to double-back along the alley they'd already checked, or duck into one of the shops, "allow me to buy you something pretty to show my utmost devotion."

It was now apparent that his every move was an attempt to avoid capturing the attention of his pursuers. Therese felt a bit more confident in her rapid fire problem-solving skills as he continued to play along with the facade. Her heart was ready to burst out of her chest and she was on the very verge of shrieking in fear that this was going to end up quite poorly for her, but. She somehow managed an outward composure.

But what if those chasing after him spotted him and saw her as an accomplice? An accomplice! This was not Diagon Alley, those were not hitwizards that she could trust would follow the proper legal procedures when this chase came to an end! Those were---thugs was the only word that Therese could find that could properly describe them. Who knew what they would do to him once he was caught? Who knew what they would do to the woman he was acting quite comfortable with?

Bloody hell.

As they moved, her feet simply going along with his plan while her mind shrieked to halt, Therese caught sight of how liberally they were grabbing at people and pulling them away from their stands and storefronts. Everyone in the alley was just gawking and staring as they approached, they were like sitting ducks waiting to be zapped. The thugs glared at, but didn't harass, an old bickering couple and came closer still. She and the vagrant moved quickly, but she pulled him to a stop in front of a stand that had beautiful, if not hexed with dark magic, necklaces.

Her next move would be her third horrible idea of the afternoon. Therese let out a great sigh as she flung her arms around his neck.

"For moi? You shouldn't have!" Over his shoulder she watched the thugs approach, making eye contact with them for a split second before she twisted and kissed the thief square on the lips. Public displays of affection were a good method at getting people to turn the other way, and if this didn't deter their search, at least his handsome features translated into a rather good kiss.

Although a lot of strange things happened to him on his adventures, and kissing pretty strangers happened more than one might think, it didn't happen often enough for it to stop being a novelty.

Particularly not to Nicodemo, who enjoyed nothing more than kissing pretty strangers and had no problem taking his time and enjoying a (very chaste) caress or two in the meantime. Though the reality was most likely this little show of affection was a quick thinking diversion of her own, he liked to think that despite the uncomely smell of the cloak he had stolen, his charms were such that even intimidated strangers could not contain themselves around him.

He could hear Larkin laughing at him.

Excellent snog or not, there was every indication in the book that she might be stark raving mad, cosying up to a wizard currently being pursued by dangerous thugs as she was, but given that the same could be said about him, Nicodemo didn't see the harm in them taking a chance on one another.

"Stick with me, darling," he drawled, putting his arm back around her and gesturing grandly to the display before them with the other. "I'll see you decked out with all the finest cursed jewels in the land."

One of the assailants wandered too nearer to them, so Nicodemo ducked his head to hers and played with his momentary accomplice's hair, making as i to stare deeply into her eyes in the kind of public display of romance that nauseated even the nosiest of onlookers while his gaze darted over her shoulders.
