Dimitri
Gabrielle clasped her hands together on her lap as she sat with her husband, her feet bouncing up and down as those large chocolate orbs scanned the area. It was an examination room, another sonogram to see how the baby was doing inside. But this wasn’t just a check up! No, this was more. This time, when she got that cold gel put on her stomach, she would not only see a picture of their baby up there on the screen, but she was going to learn it’s gender for the first time. It was very exciting, and Gab really couldn’t sit still. And she couldn’t stop smiling like an idiot either. She had a feeling that her husband had noticed her constant fidgeting, but she was trying to be stealthy about it. It just wasn’t working very well.

“Where is the doctor?”

She leaned forward, her expanded stomach causing her to not go very far as she tried to see down the hallway. When she didn’t see anyone, she sighed lightly and leaned back in her seat looking up at Dimitri with a large smile, her feet still bouncing. “I’m so anxious.” Like she really needed to spell that out for him. “It’s just…this is it! This is when we find out whether we’re going to have a son or a daughter, you know? Or…or do you want to wait? Like, have it be a surprise? Because some people do that, and that’s one way to go with it, but I figured that if we know now we can start thinking of names earlier, right? Like, we can go through boy names or girl names, and decide on what we like, and then we can decorate the nursery, and figure out if we need to paint it blue or pink, and I really don’t normally ramble on like this.” She gave a sheepish grin when she realized that she had been talking non-stop for quite some time.

"Are you going to be able to do everything, with this one bouncing around the room?" Dimitri said with a grin and a jerk of his thumb toward Gabrielle. The nurse laughed and nodded, explaining that there was a chance the baby wouldn't be in a good position to actually see if it was a boy or a girl. Dimitri's lips pursed; his boy would definitely know that today was the day to be posing and showing off his manhood for the doctor and them to see.

Probably the last time he was going to hope that his son was showing off his privates to a room full of people, but Dimitri supposed that right now it was okay to have such thoughts. Except he shrugged away the thought as he watched the doctor prepare Gabrielle.

It was always an odd sight, seeing his wife's exposed belly being covered with the goo that helped with the sonogram. Dimitri didn't really ask questions about it because he trusted the doctors, but--okay, no, he just was grossed out by this whole birthing process and would rather just stare at his wife with her pretty maternity blouses on without thinking about all the mess that was going to come this winter.

The familiar but always exhilarating sound of the baby's heart beat filled the room, and Dimitri wheeled his chair over to get a good look at the image on the screen. Was this it? Wait, was that it? He couldn't tell, last time he tried to point something out it turned out to be the kid's leg and that had everyone laughing for hours upon hours.

"So I'm assuming by the way you're both on the edge of your seats, you want to find out the sex?" the doctor asked with a laugh, and Dimitri nodded without pulling his face away from the screen.

"Do you really need to ask?" he muttered, tightening his grip on Gabrielle's hand.

"Well, let's see..."

A blush crept across her cheeks as Dimitri pointed out her behavior while they had been in the room. True, it was an over exaggeration, but she really didn’t think anyone else would notice how fidgety and bouncy she had been. But she should have known. Dimitri noticed almost everything, so it was really just wishful thinking.

Lying down on the examination table, Gab shivered a bit when the cold gel was squirted onto her stomach, her eyes glued on the screen that was nearby, waiting for the image to show up. The last time she was there, they had been able to point out the fingers and toes, and it was just so amazing. But now? Now they would be able to see even more! They would know more about their child, and they would be able to see…something.

Adjusting her head, she stared in awe at the image that was on the screen. It was their baby up there. There small, tiny little baby that had been living inside of her for 5 months. She smiled, and turned to Susan before turning to Dimitri, squeezing his hand as his grip tightened, turning now to focus in on the green and black image that was moving around.

“Do you see that?”

Susan pointed to the screen, and Gabrielle gave a nod, trying to adjust herself to get a better look.

“Well…that right there means you’re going to have a baby boy.”

His chair skidded out from underneath him as Dimitri jumped to his feet, arms raised in victory.

"YES!" he shouted, sure that he was heard out in the waiting room, down the hall, across the street. See! See? He knew it, of course they were going to have a boy! They were going to have a boy, a boy that he could play football and quidditch with, a boy he could roughhouse with when he got big enough, a BOY that was going to grow up and be---just---

Dimitri let out a long, shaky breath, and put his hands to his face to calm himself down before dropping back into the seat (nearly falling out) to look at Gabrielle.

"See. I'm always right," he let out, but his tone was that of complete adoration and awe. Because---because he wouldn't have his boy without Gabrielle, and she still had four months to go. Holy, holy hell. They were having a boy.

Gab jumped a bit when her husband rose to his feet, and raised a hand to cover her mouth as she laughed at how excited he was. Even the Sonogram Technician was smiling as she moved the little device (Gab never knew what to call that thing, and she was always way too excited to think about asking) over her belly, trying to give them a better look at the baby. She reached down for Dimitri’s hand again, as she looked at the new, clearer image of the little boy, and felt tears begin to form at the corners of her eyes. “That’s our son…” she said, her mouth pulled into a grin as the electronic photograph, her other hand reaching out to let her fingers press against the glass.

“He’s doing very well. He has a nice, strong heartbeat. And he’s growing at a good rate. From what I can see, you’re going to have a very healthy baby.”

“He’s perfect.” Gabrielle murmured, still holding onto her husband’s hand, not wanting to look away from her baby. She hated not being able to hold him in her arms yet, so being able to just see him was fantastic.

Eventually, Susan turned off the machine and wiped off her belly, and both Susan and Dimitri helped her sit up on the table, allowing her to adjust her blouse before she went to place both of her hands on her stomach. “We’re having a son.” She stated, not because she thought he forgot, but because it was just so fantastic to say.
