Errands done
Documents copied and mailed to the Advocacy, Inc lawyer. Disposable camera purchased (and a few pix taken, more to be snapped later). Hair dye purchased, to go on my hair later today. The camera and hair dye were both on sale, yay.
It was cool enough out for me to wear The Coat.
Now, I don't think I've mentioned The Coat here before. I will now remedy this.
Back in... I think it was '02?... my then-boyfriend Dan took me to San Francisco for a few days. It was a lovely trip and I had a wonderful time. One of the things we did was look at some of the secondhand stores on Haight street.
In one of them, hung up high on the wall, I caught sight of a lovely bit of red velvet. It appeared to be a coat of some sort. I knew it would be hideously expensive even secondhand, and too long for me to wear, but I asked to look at it anyway; I'm masochistic like that.
It turned out to be a handmade opera coat of the softest, plushest velvet I've every felt (silk, I'm pretty sure) of the sort where the nap and backing are different colors (crimson nap with goldish-green backing), from the length of it made for someone just my height. Shawl collar. Utterly gorgeous. More heartache, right? Prepared for horror, I looked at the pricetag.
$120.
$120, when I was working and had a boyfriend who could afford to take me to San Francisco.
$120 for a fucking exquisite handmade velvet opera coat that fit as if it were made for me.
At that price, he encouraged me to get it.
I don't wear it very often. Partly because it's usually too warm here, more because I don't really go anywhere that deserves The Coat. And on my not inconsiderable bulk, the effect is a little aldermanic. But it's so beautiful, and I cherish it. Sort of like Kaylee with the frilly dress in Shindig.
