:O
Derek had not paid much attention to the time, in all honesty. There'd been visitors, there'd been friends, there'd been family--there'd been a lot of people who had made it clear just how much they had him in their thoughts, although if you asked him to name them, he'd have only the vaguest idea of where to start and who to name. Thus when the bleak Saturday sun rose, peaked, and slowly began its descent into dark, Derek had no clue.

He had a forcibly-instated time off, which his superiors insisted was crucial for maintaining Derek's mental health. No, he tried to protest, no, he most emphatically did not need time off, but it was to no avail. He couldn't honestly remember how he had spent the past two weeks, only that he went from Frank's house to his own flat somewhere in the middle. This was no state of blank catatonia, which he would have regarded as pure bliss, however, as Derek's mind was working overtime, trying to make sense out of everything that had happened, what he was supposed to do with his life right now, and how he was supposed to do it. This particular day, when a knock sounded at his door, his thoughts were a bit less than gracious. Believing it to be Delana, or Rachel, or some other well-meaning female who wanted nothing more than to--well, at least there were people who cared about him. That was what he needed to repeat to himself.

Rubbing a hand over his unshaven face, he took a moment to brace himself and try to put on his best face. After taking a deep breath, Derek grasped the doorknob and pulled--the face leaving him too stunned to bother trying to look even remotely all right.

"What--"

"You look like shit," Galvin Gudgeon let out, eyebrows high in a solemn expression of interrogation. He'd expected Derek to look like this, Vinny remembered what he looked like the days, weeks after Marlie's death and the all too familiar pain in his chest throbbed at the sight of his best friend. He stood in the doorway another moment before he pushed forward, not giving Derek a chance to send him away. He'd pissed off way too many people on the team to get denied.

Gleny had owled him---frantic and upset about Dearborn and Dorcas--Dorcas. Vinny didn't want to believe any of it, he had been there from the very beginning it felt like; Dorcas had definitely known something was up with Dearborn, having to hide him in Vinny's house for days nearly two years ago--Dorcas! His first...well, no, not girlfriend, but his first---first! And his first girlfriend that had still owled him from time to time with random notes and squabbles about American quidditch versus the UK league, it---

He had contemplated not returning the owl at all, because that meant he could ignore the fact as if it had never happened.d

But Vinny knew he couldn't, and that Derek, his best friend from their early days in Hogwarts, would need him. Vinny had run away from his trauma, but he knew Derek was stronger and more stubborn, so---Vinny didn't know what he could do, but he was going to try and help.

"And this place looks like shit, too," he said, his natural need for cleanliness and order swooping back in as he began to flick his wand this way and that, sending garbage away.

Derek was still facing an empty doorway by the time his mind finally snapped to attention. For a moment, he wondered if he was actually seeing things now, but it was too convenient of a hallucination to think of trying to wake up from.

"I'm so fucking glad to see you," Derek said, closing the door with a gentle thud, slumping against the door with his eyes closed when he turned around. This was the person he needed to see, this was the person he'd been so tempted to run to after the entire thing had happened, and this was one of the few people who'd understand what was going on. Although there were a thousand questions swarming about in his head, there were a few that he knew took precedence.

"What are you--when did you get here?" he asked tiredly, almost thinking about feeling bad for not aiding in cleaning up, but not fully aware of all his thoughts to begin being able to dictate what he could and could not feel.

Vinny scooped up a sweatshirt and tossed it on the ever growing pile, turning to Derek with a shrug, "About ten minutes ago. Portkey's are a bloody mess these days."

He really hated himself for taking this long to get out here, even missing the funeral. Vinny couldn't deny that he hadn't immediately felt the need to rush to Derek's side, which was what really stabbed in the guilt. He shouldn't be so weak as to ignore his best mate's needs simply because he didn't want to deal with his own feelings and emotions, but--finally, he was able to make the arrangements. Of course, he was being fined a bloody fortune, but that wasn't important.

When there was finally room to sit on the couch, Vinny dropped down and looked over at Derek, his solemn expression returning. "What do you need?"

Seeing Vinny gave Derek a powerful shock of feeling--sadness, because he very clearly remembered Marlene's death and the effect it had had on his best friend. But also happiness, which troubled him greatly, because it shouldn't have sounded appeasing to him, that there was someone out there who seemed to have lived through the exact same ordeal he was just barely surviving. And yet here was this man, sitting in front of him, and alive, and Derek just didn't know how he had gotten there.

"I--I don't know," Derek sighed, closing his eyes. "I just--how did you get the strength to just up and move? I feel like I'm rooted here--like, continually drawn to whatever vestiges of her I can find. Trying to--to hold on longer."

The way he was talking about her was if months and months had passed. She'd only been gone from him for--what was it? A few weeks? It couldn't have been so longer. And here he was, treating her memory so caustically. His fingers trembled against the wood softly as he tried to contain the tremors that were seeping back to him. It had seemed like such a long time since he shook with the force of trying to keep something at bay, though it couldn't have been longer than just yesterday.

Vinny watched Derek carefully. Strength? He thought it had been...strength that led him to accept the Meteorites' invitation? He let out a short laugh, looking down and shaking his head, "I've been calling it 'running away like a chicken' but if you want to call it strength..."

He pressed the heels of his hands to his eyes, a headache growing as he had run away from this, all of this--for nearly half a year, now. Vinny didn't have constant reminders of Marlene or of England over in Moosejaw, he didn't have people questioning him or wondering how he was doing or---Davy owled, but even those letters were vague and rambling. Vinny didn't feel like moving away was strong at all and he often wondered if Marlie was upset at him for leaving everything behind.

Vinny looked back up at Derek and shook his head, "I can't tell you what to do, I just---" He paused again, trying to think about what had led him to believe that it was okay to go to Canada. "I just thought about how sad she would...how sad she'd be if I let myself ruin everything we had, so---I ran. To stop myself from doing that."

He pulled back his lips, clasping his hands. He really never thought he'd have to talk about this.
