Guilt
Cassidy knows why he's been called to meet with one of the adults. They're going to throw him out, and he can't blame them. The other students treat him like he's got the plague, and he hasn't seen Tina in days. Maybe she heard about Jake and doesn't want to see him now, either. He couldn't blame her.

No one wants to be friends with a murderer.

They're going to send him away, so he's packed the one backpack he owns,  one of the first real things he's ever owned in his life. He doesn't know where he's going to go, or how he'll live, but he'll have to figure something out.

Still, he looks like a man headed toward the gallows when he walks into the office.

Scott Summers was grim, but then again, that tended to describe him under the best of circumstances. And these were anything but. One student had died and another was responsible, albeit accidentally. They had had injuries on campus before... but nothing like this.

"Cassidy," he said, hoping he sounded sympathetic. He was, after all. There but for the grace of God had gone he and his own abilities. One small slip up in those early years and he could have just as easily killed Hank or Bobby or Warren or, God help him, even Jean.

"I want you to know that no one here on staff blames you for what happened."

Cassidy was doing his best to lock down his own emotions right now. He'd been happy when Jake asked him to play, and more so when he found he was pretty good at throwing the football. That's when things had gone wrong.

He could never be happy again if he wanted to keep from hurting people.

"Mister Summers, that's very kind of you to say...but I understand why people would be angry. People liked Jake a lot. I liked Jake." he says somberly.

"I did wrong and I'll face the consequences of my actions. I'll leave so I don't hurt anyone else." Cassidy says.

Scott shook his head. "We all liked Jake," he said, sadly. "And it will take time. But people will come around."

"The last thing anyone wants is for you to leave," he said. "This is the best place for you to be, so that nothing like that ever happens again."

"Sir, I wish I knew why Doctor Millbury made it so that I can't control my powers. If I could do it, I would. I swear. I just...it feels like I'll never be able to keep it all locked in." Cassidy says.

"How can I learn to control what I can do without wearing...a collar?" he asks, visibly shuddering at the thought of having to wear that evil device again.

Scott looked upon Cassidy sympathetically. "I know the feeling, Cassidy. Believe me. I've never been able to control my abilities."

"I don't know... yet," he said. "But I have Doctor McCoy working around the clock on that issue. If anyone can solve it, he can."

Cassidy looks up at Mr. Summers as if seeing him for the first time.

"Really? You can't control what you can do, either? Can I ask what it's like? How do you get by every day?" the boy asks, in rapid succession. Then he remembers his manners.

"Sorry. I should probably let you speak so you can answer." he chuckles nervously.

A nervous smile twitched at Scott's lips.

"It's... difficult," he said, "but I've learned to manage." He tapped the side of his glasses. "These glasses restrain my optic blasts. I've had them ever since... ever since I was about your age, actually. I'd say it's gotten easier over the years, but really...

"It's always there, on the edge of my awareness. Always looking for what could go wrong."

Cassidy took a bit of hope from Scott's story. If he could learn to get a handle on his powers, then maybe Cassidy could as well.

"I don't think I'll ever feel totally safe again, but...it's nice to have a couple of friends, since I don't have any family. Do you have any other family here, sir?" he asks.

He nodded, with a small smile. "I do. My wife, Jean, is here, along with my daughters, Rachel and Anastasia."

He'd been quite quick to accept Anastasia into their lives. Otherdimensional family was part and parcel of his life.

"Anastasia's your daughter? Very cool, sir. I know she's Tina's sister; I saw them hanging out recently." Cassidy says.

"And Mrs. Summers is awesome. She asked me how I was doing the other day. I'm still not used to people asking me how I'm doing and caring about the answer." the young man says.

"She's a good kid," Scott replied. So was Tina, actually, in spite of her mother.

He smiled. "That's her all over for you. She truly cares about everyone."

"I didn't know my mom or dad, but Doctor Millbury told me things about them. Not good things, either." Cassidy says.

"Sometimes I have dreams about this lady with red hair, and she's singing to me when I was a baby in some language I don't know. I don't know who she is,but I feel good when I think about it." he says.

"Were you close to your parents, sir? Do you have any siblings?" Cassidy asks.

He shook his head. "My parents... dissappeared from my life when I was a young man. My brother and I were in an orphanage for a time and he was adopted. I wasn't. I didn't reunite with him for years, and didn't get to meet my father again until I was an adult, when I learned my mother had passed away."

It was a lot more complicated than that, but Cassidy didn't need to be burdened with his unusual history. The mention of a red-haired women in Cassidy's dreams confused him, especially since Sinister had had some kind of connection to the boy.

"Wow. And I thought my life was hard." Cassidy says. "Were you ever lonely? Were you happy when you found your brother?"

Cassidy would have given anything to have a brother or sister, someone he could be part of a family with. But Doctor Milbury was the only person who knew who his parents, and he wasn't going to tell him anything.

"I had friends in the lab...before things happened." he says.

"I spent most of my early life lonely," Scott reflected. "Until I came here and met others like me."

He smiled, wistfully. "I hadn't seem him in years, and when I did he was in danger from a super-villain called the Living Monolith. But yes, I was happy to find him again. We don't, rarely really, agree on much. Especially these days. But I'm glad he's in my life."

He frowned. "I'm sorry, Cassidy. I read the report about that. I wish we could have done more."

"It's just one of those things one has to get used to, sir. I want to learn to control what I do so I never hurt anyone else. Maybe some day I can apologize to Mina and all those people I hurt." he says.

"I'm glad you have a family, Mister Summers, and that life got better for you, even if it's not always easy." Cassidy says.

"You'll learn to control your powers, Cassidy, I'm sure of it," Scott said. "I'm a rather rare exception, rather than the rule in that case."

He managed a smile. "Life has a way of doing that, if you give it a chance."

"I'll try to keep that in mind, sir. I'm going to work as hard as I can to change my life." Cassidy says.

"Thank you for letting me stay, Mister Summers...and for listening. It's good to know I'm not the only person like me out there."

"Thank you, Mr. Summers. I really appreciate it." Cassidy says, rising from his chair.

"I should probably get something to eat and put my stuff back. See ya." he says, turning to go.
