A Few Days Later
Matt had recovered quickly from the battle at Vitae, though he hadn't spoken to the others since then. He'd been meaning to check on Greg and Michelle, and call Lynch to see how they were all doing, but he'd been sidetracked by his own ailing, meeting a new ally,  Dracula's revelation, and Shelly's injury.

Matt Walker entered Chicago Memorial and, as he'd done for the past four days, gone directly to Shelly Drumm's room to check on her.  The first day, he'd been greeted by a man that looked to be Shelly's father. Jericho Drumm was known in every mystic circle in one fashion or another, as easily as Matt's own mentor, Ian McNee, was. Matt had also been hesitant to call Ian, because he was certain he might blow up at his mentor for not telling him about...

No, there was no time to think about that.

He walks into Shelly's room, expecting to see her still unconscious from the damage done to her by Dracula. How they were going to explain the marks her neck was anyone's guess.

How Matt planned to make Dracula pay for what he'd done wasn't.

Doctors make the worst patients and upon regaining consciousness Shelly was no exception to that rule. That the nurses were kind of freaked out didn't help the matter--though Shelly acknowledged that the marks on her neck were probably strange (she was relieved he hadn't actually torn her throat open as he had said he would.) Shelly just wanted out. She wanted to go home. She wanted...to manage to go through an hour without being poked, prodded, or checked on.

It was just as she was settling after another set of vitals checks that Matt walked in.

"...Walker?"

"You...look like hell." Matt says simply. Leave it Matt Walker to call it like he sees it at the best times.

"How are you doing, Shelly?" he asks, straightening his duster. At 6'6", Matt definitely stands out, even when he's not trying to.

"When do you think they'll let you out of here?" he asks. He hates hospitals, personally. Bad things always happen in hospitals.

"Well I kind of feel like hell, Matt, thanks for noticing. I freaking hate hospitals. These places are vile. I've been trying to get them to let me out of here NOW but seems they want a specialist to 'examine' my wounds. Idiots.

"No, I'm doing better. You had us worried the first day you were here. Your father wasn't particularly happy about this." he says.

"I've just been coming to check on you, mostly, because...well, it's apparently my father that's responsible for you being here. I didn't know about that until he said anything...and then I got it confirmed for me." Matt says sadly.

"Anyway, I just wanted to see that you're all right." he says.

"You aren't responsible for your father's actions any more than I am responsible for my father's actions, which apparently included a silence spell on a particularly obnoxious nurse." She smiled, ever so briefly. "Dad mentioned something about you being here. Or rather he mentioned 'white guy in the inappropriate coat who smells of your powers'. I did the math. Have you actually been coming here the whole time?"

"Hey, hold on! What the hell is wrong with my coat?" Matt asks indignantly. This is his favorite duster. It's not only clean and in good repair, but it's been enchanted to repel a werewolf's claws.

Not that he wants to test that or anything.

"I've just stopped by when I had time to see if you were all right. That's all. I kinda got you into this, so it's only right that I check on you." Matt says.

"It's August, Matt."

She shook her head.

"Actually, your father got me into this. His freaky little cult of emo losers were killing people in my city and I had to be nosy and decide to go stop him. Had nothing to with you, really. I'm the one who went off on my own in the club."

She wasn't about to admit that that was about as spectacularly stupid as his little entrance number.

"So...how'd it feel to wear my magic for a bit?"

"It's enchanted to keep me cool. Not that I need help with being cool, but you know what I mean." Matt says.

"And yes, young lady. We need to talk about your tendency to ignore danger and rush right in. I mean, if we'd had the element of surprise, that would have been one thing. I'm just sayin'...next time, look before you leap." he says mock-chidingly.

He pauses a moment before he answers her next question.

"Shelly, your magic is going to lead you some place you can't come back from eventually. There's still time to keep that from happening, but...necromancy is dangerous. More dangerous than almost any other path." he says.

"It's also the only kind I can practice. I didn't just pick necromancy and start studying up. I'm a natural practitioner. Or, as my father likes to point out I'm a natural witch. Like my mother. Trust me. I tried to learn other things. I've got this. I'll be okay.

She really didn't need yet another lecture trying to show her the real true way away from the darker side of the arts.

"And if we're going to talk about looking and leaping...I'm thinking maybe you should take some of your own advice."

"My idea was the best one at the time. You don't out-stealth vampires. You sucker-punch them in the face and force them to react to you." Matt says. "Granted, things probably could have been handled better, but it was the best solution at the time." he says.

"And I've dealt with Dracula before. There aren't a lot of ways to handle him except to for the throat." Matt says.

He then realizes who he's talking to and kicks himself mentally.

"No pun intended." he says.

"Yeah, well. I'd like a swing at him. Just for the record. The bite hurt. A great deal. I'm gonna be lucky if I avoid nerve damage."

She shook her head, then winced.

"So, as you can see I'm alive and well and really annoyed by all the fuss. Is your guilt properly assuaged now that you see I'm not dead?"

"You hate being helpless." Matt says. It's not a question. He understands, though, because he hates it as well.

Matt sighs and turns to look at her. This woman is impossible.

"I didn't mean to snap at you. I just wanted to see you were getting better. I'm sure we won't have to cross paths again after this. Your father was pretty insistent about that little caveat." Matt says.

"Do you have a way to get home when they release you?" he asks.

She arched her brow.

"My father told you to stay away from me? Jesus. He doesn't have the right to do that. I'm a grown damn woman." She rolled her eyes and sighed. "Ignore him. Considering that we both live in this city and weird shit happens, we'll see each other. It's almost a guarantee."

Yeah. She'd have a chat with Jericho.

"Actually...no, I don't. I'm not really sure where the hell my truck is."

"He didn't say it in so many words, but I've known enough practitioners to know who means to put a hex on me and who doesn't." Matt says. "I wouldn't be surprised if he shows up to drive you home and moves into your place to redo your wards."

Matt chuckles a little. That's what he'd do if it was his daughter.

"Your truck is in the parking lot. Michelle drove, I think, while Lynch made you sure you didn't die until you got here." Matt says.

"Actually, Dad's off...doing something. I'm not entirely sure what, but he left me here on my own recog. I am sure my dad has already warded things again, though. Which means I'll have to do them again myself. Ugh. Good to know about my truck, though. I guess my keys are around somewhere." It occurred to her that she might need some things, though. "I...I actually think I have a favor to ask you."

Matt wasn't sure if he'd expected that question, but it took him by surprise all the same. He knew where the place was, of course, but that meant going into her warded home, possibly running into her father (who did not like him) and going through her unmentionables.

Shelly might notice that Matt turns slightly red at the thought.

"Uh, yeah. Sure. No problem. That shouldn't be a problem at all." he says, gathering his resolve.

Oh, what he wouldn't give to fight a vampire right now. Far less daunting task, that.

Was he blushing? Mr "hey vampires come and get me" blushing? Interesting.

"I'd really appreciate it, Matt. I...I don't really feel comfortable wandering out of here all disgusting like that, much less with visible evidence of that bite. It's going to be hard enough to not have nightmares about it as is.

"...and if you could peek around my place to make sure there are no more corpses, I'd be really grateful."

She hated to admit it, but she was rattled.

The moment he sees how shaken she is, he kicks himself for being afraid of her clothing. She's asking for his help, at great cost to her pride, and here he is thinking about himself.

"Shelly, I'll make sure your place is okay and bring you some stuff. Do you only want clothes? If you need books or music, just let me know what to look for and I'll grab it while I'm there.

And there won't be any bodies when you get home. I promise. Just to be on the safe side, I'll take you home when you get released. Deal?"

"You're not a wuss. You just survived what hundreds of thousands of people every day don't survive. You're also going to get better. Just...don't beat up on the staff because you're rattled, okay? They're only doing the same stuff you'd do for any patient in your care." Matt says.

"In fact, I remember you doing that for a particular patient recently." he grins.

"You're welcome. Though I suspect my little spell also saved my life. I'm really impressed with how you wielded the sudden power surge, Matt. If you hadn't been so skilled it's possible I'd be in the morgue. Then my dad would really hate you."

She tried to smile at that, mostly because the idea of a very angry Jericho didn't really scare her the way it might everyone else. He was her dad, after all.

"So what's your plan for going after Dracula?"

His expression becomes grim at the mention of Dracula.

"Same as it was before. Find him, stake him and end his reign of terror." Matt says grimly.

"With all due respect, Shelly...no. I'm not bringing anyone else into this. Now that I know who Dracula really is, I need to deal with him, with this, on my own." Matt says.

He's spent the last few days thinking this whole thing over, and has made his decision. He especially doesn't want Shelly involved, because Dracula nearly killed her, and he doesn't think the Original Fangster would pass up a chance to finish what he started on Shelly.

"I hope you can understand why I'm doing this." Matt says.

"I can, but I need you to understand that this is personal. Dracula attempted to use me to overpower you. That was his intention by dining on me. He wanted to temporarily subdue you by outpowering you. That pisses me off and not just because I was being used. I have to have some part in this somehow. Matt starts to say something, then stops. He goes to say something else and rethinks it. He understands Shelly's desire to go after Dracula, because he'd want in on it if Dracula had done to him what he'd done to her.

"Okay, how about we table this discussion for now? We're not in a really good frame of mind to talk about this. I'll let you relax and get a clean bill of health from the doctors, while I go to your place and some things. Don't worry, I've got your keys." he says.
