It's fun to study...
Who: Severus and Peter
Where: The Library
When: This Evening before Dinner

Severus found himself once again in the library cozy in his secluded area. All around him he could hear his fellow students looking for the books they needed for class. He could also hear their hushed whispers, a few were filled with anxiety and worry. Severus smiled to himself at this since it was evident that these students were ill prepared for their courses. Many would think at the way Severus was furiously scribbling on the parchment in front of him that he too was in the same book, they'd be wrong. The notes in front of Severus had nothing to do with any classes and more to do with ideas for spells and potions. Raising his hands above his head Severus stretched his tired muscles.

The spell he was currently working on was a lot more difficult than he expected. He was inspired by the silencing spell to create something that would block the hearing of those within a particular area. At first he thought if he simple broke down the silencing spell and replaced particular aspects with his desired outcome it would work. Of course it looked good on paper but it still wasn't effective. His first tests had shown that the spell amplified sounds around a particular area... although handy... not what he was looking for. Severus pulled out his pocket watch and realized that it was close to dinner so he needed to hurry.

Peter was, however, one of those students who happened to be running around frantically. He lost track of time more often than he realized, but he also knew that he had to at least get started on his Potions before dinner. Somehow, Peter doubted that Lily would be happy if he asked for help and he didn't even start what they had to do.

Not even sure where to begin, Peter decided to find the quietest place within the already silent library and find a few books that were close by. He wasn't paying attention, however, and all but tripped into a smaller area of desks. The first thing he saw from the floor was a pair of feet, and he was up in an instant to apologize. The words died on his lips when he saw that he had tripped into an area with Severus Snape. He hesitated, pulling his bag over his shoulder.

"Ah... Sorry about that," he managed to get out. "Tripped."

Severus was on the verge of yelling at the individual that bursted the bubble of his contentment. All the harsh words and criticisms died in his mouth as he saw Pettigrew. Swallowing deeply he plastered a pained smile on his face and through gritted teeth uttered, in a voice full of tension, a greeting, "Hello, Petti...Peter."

It wouldn't do for Peter to tell Lily that Severus had been less then courteous. There were many times in the past where she had lectured Severus that he needed to be nice to her friends. On one occasion when Severus had ridiculed Peter for being an idiot, which he was since he added the Asphodel during the shimmering stage rather than during the boiling and nearly took out the class and since immediately afterwards Severus had belittled Peter in front of Lily for his idiocy, Lily decided to punish Severus by ignoring him for a week, Severus had not been happy with that at all.

Since that time he had gone through pains to be nice to Peter Pettigrew, even if he sometimes wished his year mate to the very pits of hell. It didn't help that Severus often turned green when he spotted the two Gryffindor's sharing moments. He envied that blasted Pettigrew for being closer to Lily than he could be.

"How are you this evening?" The tension was still present in the air and Severus's voice came out a little less pained and more with the undertones of someone resigned to his fate.

Peter could almost feel the tension radiating from Severus and he had to hold himself back from turning and running in the opposite direction. He didn't think Lily would appreciate hearing that he just about ran away from the mere sights of her friend, though. Instead, he forced a smile on his face and stepped closer to the table.

"I'm fine," he answered. "Just decided to come try my luck at homework, is all." Peter nervously motioned to his bag.

It was awkward, attempting to be civil to someone he had no contact with other than Lily. For that matter, he couldn't remember a time where he and Severus were alone. This had to be a first and, if he didn't sit down and get to know the Slytherin, Lily would kill him if she found out. So, taking a deep breath, Peter dropped his bag on the table and slowly took a seat.

"I... hope you don't mind. I won't bother your work." Peter waited to take out his things until Severus said something. "If you do, I can go..."

Don't mind? Of course Severus minded he didn't want his solitude broken by the likes of Peter. But did Severus tell him that he minded? Nope. He swallowed those words with an obvious gulping sound and just stared at Peter. "Since you've already seated yourself, Peter, you might as well do something productive."

There. Lily would be happy I didn't send him off like a first year Severus thought glumly to himself. Now that someone was seated next to him in his quiet area Severus knew all hope for creative thinking was lost. Instead of returning to his notes on his spell he closed that notebook and brought out his potions book. The book was a tattered ratty thing, worn and torn with overuse and age. Severus's face lit up with a small smile, the book always seemed to cheer Severus up. Although many of his year mates ridiculed Severus for not having a newer book he ignored them. It wasn't the book itself that was important, Severus opened the book and there scrawled in ink nearly faded was his mother's name, and that is what made the book important.

Being in a much more cheery mood than before he turned to Peter, "What are you studying?" Although the tone was a bit more inviting for conversation, Severus's face was not, did Severus know this? Nope. In his mind he was smiling.

Peter ducked his head, trying to hide the flush that moved across his face. How did Lily stand him, this Slytherin? It was something he figured he could never understand and would just have to go with. Still not looking at Severus, Peter pulled open his bag and brought out his potions materials. It didn't even occur to him that he could ask the other for help--he never though to ask anyone but Lily in the first place.

So far, Peter managed not to bang anything around on the table. Considering that he usually dropped something by now, he was both relieved and worried. If he didn't drop anything now, would be drop something worse later? He hoped it wouldn't be anything of Severus' things. That moment came, however, when the Slytherin spoke again. Peter dropped his quill at the voice, splattering ink over his parchment.

"Ah... sorry. Sorry." He quickly moved to clean it up, answering the question as he did so. "I'm trying my potion's essay a bit. Get a late head start on it. How about you?"

Severus's jaw clenched in annoyance as a bit of ink splashed onto his hand. He reached into his bag with his clean hand and pulled out an expensive silk handkerchief with his initials and the Prince family crest embroidered on it. He wiped his hand making sure none of the offensive black liquid was left, then he passed the handkerchief to Peter, "You might as well use this to clean up that mess before the ink soaks into the wood."

Although the handkerchief was made of an expensive fabric and spelled to absorb anything, ink would still discolor it. Not that Severus cared since it was one of the many "appropriate" gifts his grandparents had sent him over the years. "And as for your question about the potions essay," Severus pulled out a roll of fresh parchment to begin on next weeks Potions work, "it wasn't at all difficult."

Severus was going to ignore Peter for the rest of the night but a voice, sounding very similar to Lily's entered his mind, "Help him, Severus.", Severus ignored it.... well he tried to. If anything the voice began to take on the stubborn persistence and sounded more and more like Lily. Once again Severus knew what he had to do, he turned to look at Peter and sighed, "You want a bit of help?"

"T-thank you." Peter took the handkerchief lightly before moving to clean up the table. He didn't even think to use his wand, already nervous enough around the Slytherin. Trying to get the slight flush off his face, Peter kept his head down as he rubbed at the ink.

His hand paused when he heard the remark on the essay being easy. Sure, it might have been for someone that was good at it in the first place, but the subject had never been his strongest. In fact, he didn't know any Gryffindor that greatly excelled at the subject (except Lily, perhaps). He scrubbed a little more roughly than he should have at the ink, not even noticing that he was just rubbing the table now.

The question on whether or not he wanted help had peter looking up again. It was unexpected and something that he didn't think he'd ever hear come from Severus. He straightened in his chair, trying not to look too hopeful. "You're offering?"

"Did I stutter?" Severus asked with annoyance looking at Peter with narrowed eyes. This was one of the reasons Severus tended to keep to himself, people either repeated what he said or stated the obvious. Severus raised his hand and brushed it through his hair. He gave a little cough and sighed, "Yes, Peter. I'm offering to help."

Severus was beginning to relax around Peter since he kept reminding himself that once false move would probably send the boy to Lily. Reaching into his bag Severus pulled out the notes he took from various tomes found in the library. The notes were useless to him now and pretty much useless when he was writing his essay. Turning to look at Peter though, Severus knew they could be put to use. There was only one problem, Lily. To Severus the sharing of notes was just sharing, sometimes though with Lily it could be considered cheating and Severus didn't know if this was one of those times. Severus figured he'd let Peter decide, "Peter, I have my notes here that you could use if you want. But I don't know if Lily would consider it cheating."
