Okay, so this was definitely a terrible idea, but Christina was doing it anyway. She'd skipped the camping trip with her brother and Narcissa and now she was standing across the street from the restaurant and it was just after seven. She was going to go in and then she'd be on a maybe date with the Headmaster of her school who was technically old enough to be her father, if he's knocked someone up in high school.

Christina took a deep breath and crossed the street. She hadn't gotten dressed up for nothing. She could always just change her mind about volunteering in the office if this turned weird. Weirder. Christina stepped inside the restaurant, glancing around until she saw Tom, tucked away in a quiet corner of the place, and made her excuses to the hostess as she walked across the room to greet him. She definitely hadn't misunderstood the invitation, right? "This place is nice on a Saturday at seven," she said, stopping beside his table.

Tom was a little nervous about this whole thing. He couldn't believe that he'd asked a student on a date. Even if it wasn't an actual date. He hadn't flat out asked her or anything and a large part of him thought that she wasn't going to show at all.

But, there she was, looking absolutely stunning in her dress. He smiled up at her. "Miss Rosier. I told you it was lovely. Take a seat." He picked up the single, white rose he'd gotten for her and held it out. "You look beautiful."

Christina smiled back at Tom, sitting and then taking the rose from him. "Thank you," she said. "You look very handsome." She played with the rose for a moment, trying to calm her nerves, and then set it down beside her silverware.

"You should call me Christina," she said, looking up at him. "Unless you want me to call you Headmaster all night."

"I would prefer if you didn't call me Headmaster." Tom laughed at that and shook his head. "We may get odder looks than we're already getting. A girl as beautiful as you shouldn't be seen with an old sack like me."

Tom smiled and ran his eyes over her. "Thank you for coming tonight, Christina. I wasn't sure you'd show. I thought you'd think I was a pervert."

"You're not an old sack," Christina said, laughing a little. "Thank you for inviting me. The food here looks and smells amazing. I didn't even know it existed."

She raised an eyebrow when he said she'd think he was a pervert. "I'm not exactly sure what I've decided about you yet, but I'm going to with hold judgement until after dinner. Tom."

Tom smiled at that. "Well. You can hold your judgement, but I promise. I don't have any intention of doing anything." He assured her. "I just thought we could have dinner and I could take you home."

He held out the menu to her. "You can get whatever you want."

Christina took the menu from Tom, looking it over and feeling very pleased with how this was going so far. "You're a gentleman, then. That's good to know." She hadn't known what to expect, but he was the Headmaster of the school and he'd asked her on a date, in a roundabout way. Then again, she'd said yes.

"I think I'll just have the penne in the tomato-cream sauce. I don't want to eat anything too heavy. This is a tight dress." She looked up at Tom. "What do you usually get?"

"I typically get the alfredo with a red wine." Tom told her with a shrug. "But, seeing as I'll be driving you home tonight, I'm having water. I'm responsible in some ways."

He smiled at her for a moment, then took a sip of his water. "What would you recommend?"

"If I was going to recommend a red wine that you can't drink tonight?" Christina took the wine list from Tom and looked it over carefully. "Something Italian. Something dry, maybe. They have a barolo on the menu. I'd suggest that, as long as it's a decent quality."

She looked up at Tom and smiled. "Barolos are good with pasta dishes that don't have much meat involved. It would compliment it without over-whelming it."

Tom smiled at Christina. She was a very charming girl, wasn't she? It was easy to talk to her, even if she seemed a bit tense. He was tense as well, so knowing she felt nervous helped to calm him down. He touched her hand gently.

"It's going to be nice having you working in the office." Tom told him. "You can help me plan the parties for school functions."

Christina glanced at Tom's hand on hers, then linked their fingers together. It was a date and she was going to relax and pretend it wasn't any different than a normal first date. "That would be great," Christina said. "I'm actually very organized, and I'd have a secret weapon in Narcissa. She's brilliant at that sort of thing."

Christina smiled at Tom. "I'm sorry I'm nervous. Would you mind if I ordered myself a glass of wine even though you're not drinking tonight?"

"I don't think that you need Narcissa. You're brilliant on your own." Tom told her, shaking his head. "But, if you really want to involve her, that'll be okay."

He glanced at their hands with a small, satisfied smile. She was lacing their fingers together and it was just... nice to not feel so lonely as he did all the time. "You order yourself a drink. I can live vicariously through you."

"I'll make sure to enjoy it for both of us," Christina said, smiling at Tom and looking down at their hands for a moment. This wasn't nearly as weird or as awkward as she'd thought it would be.

She placed her order when the waiter came over, then waited for Tom to place his. "Narcissa and Evan are camping right now," Christina told Tom. "I begged out of the trip so I could come here tonight. I'm glad I did."

Tom ordered his food and glanced at their hands again. How had he gotten this lucky? Clearly he'd done something great in another life if this was the treatment he was getting in this one.

"Camping?" He arched a brow at that. "I can't imagine Narcissa camping. How did you manage to get out of it in the end?" He asked.

Tom laughed at that. "It's surprising, I know. She's not the biggest fan of a lot of the camping stuff, but she does like s'mores. Her fiance was going this time too, but his hands are way too manicured for him to be outdoorsy."

She brushed a bit of hair behind her ear. "I love camping. I'm not as outdoorsy as my brother, but I like getting my hands dirty."

"Yes, but you look as if you could handle your own." Tom told her with a shrug. "You look like a tough girl underneath your gorgeous exterior. You could probably fix a car better than I could."

He gave her a brief smile, then glanced at the salad that was delivered. "Did you eat today?" He asked. "I forgot to eat today. I'm bad at taking care of myself."

"You forgot to eat?" Christina raised an eyebrow at that, picking up her glass of wine after it was poured for her. "I ate today. I'm not one of those girls that doesn't eat. You should eat."

She took a sip of her wine. "On Monday I'll bring you coffee and a pastry when I come in to drop my phone off so you'll at least have breakfast."

Tom laughed at that. "It would be appreciated, but you don't' have to. You shouldn't be expected to take care of me. I should be able to take care of myself. I'm sure you have other worries."

He sat back and began to get a bit of salad from the bowl. "Have some. The salad here is delicious."

"No, my life is pretty care-free right now. No boyfriend, no school trouble, no family drama. The most I have to worry about if my brother getting a crush on Narcissa's fiance and that won't stop me from picking up coffee before school," Christina told Tom, shaking her head. "I want to."

She served herself some of the salad and picked up her fork. "You should tell me more about yourself. I feel like I'm always talking to you about me and my friends."

"I'm fine with you talking about you and your friends. You're much more interesting than I am." Tom assured her, shaking his head. "The most I do is go to work."

He ate a bite of his salad. "Well. Lucius would be better off with your brother. Since he's queer as all hell."

"You must have other interests, though," Christina said, shaking her head. "I spend most of my time at school, but I still hang out with my friends and spend a lot of time reading about wine and worrying about the vineyard while we're in England."

She tried some of the salad and hummed happily. "This is good. Evan wants to prove to Narcissa that Lucius is gay so she won't marry him. I'm not sure it'll matter that he is. Her family is crazy."

"Lucius is the second richest heir in the United Kingdom. Of course it won't matter." Tom shook his head and laughed. "I know her parents. They'd never let something as trivial as sexuality stop their daughter from getting married to him."

He shook his head. "They'll probably have children with awful names like theirs."

Tom thought about what he did outside of work. "Well. I collect trinkets. Thinks from people I look up to. Sheet music of composers I adore and books signed by the authors."

Poor Narcissa. Christina took another sip of her wine to try and stop feeling sorry for her friend. She'd be rich and comfortable and maybe whatever boy Evan was setting her up with wouldn't care. "I don't understand people who only care about money."

She raised an eyebrow at Tom. "That's interesting. That's... really romantic, actually. In the classical sense. Sheet music and signed books? I wish I had something special like that."

"That's probably why I'm not married." Tom admitted as he looked back at Christina. "I don't have a huge fortune. Just enough to live comfortably. Which I'm okay with, actually. But, I'm sure it's not attractive to the women who run in my circles."

Tom smiled. "You could have something special like that. What are you interested in?" He asked.

"Women who are only interested in money aren't worth marrying," Christina told Tom, shaking her head. "Narcissa may be a bit dim and sort of shallow, but she didn't say yes to Lucius's proposal because of his money, at least. She said yes because she thought he loved her."

She laughed at his question and tapped her glass with a finger. "Wine, mostly. Collecting wine seems like an expensive hobby, though. I'd love to have my own shop one day."

"I don't think Narcissa is like the rest of her family. They did basically sell her sister to Rodolphus Lestrange." Tom pointed out, shaking his head. "Which I find completely horrible."

Tom nodded. "That dream doesn't sound far fetched. You could have a shop and earn money to collect the wine that you want. What bottle do you want?"

"The Blacks are the most repressed group of people I've ever been around," Christina said, shaking her head. "Everyone except Narcissa's cousin Sirius, and the rest of the family thinks he's crazy because of it."

She thought about it for a moment. "If I could have any bottle in the world? A Chateau Latour Pauillac 1990 or 1994, but even if I could find one they're still $800 a bottle. My family's well off, but I don't have that sort of allowance money."

Tom took a mental note of the bottle she wanted. While he wasn't extravagantly rich like the Malfoys, he had made a bit of cash with some of his other endeavors that didn't involve being a Headmaster. He could maybe swing a bottle of it.

"That's a very expensive bottle. I'm sure you'll have your hand on it one day." Tom told her with a smile. "You can start saving up with the money you'll earn working in the office."

"Money?" Christina repeated, giving Tom a surprised look and then laughing. "Really? That's even better. I thought I was going to be doing it for free. For the job experience."

She ate some more of her salad. "I'll start a bottle fund. Maybe by the end of the school year I'll have enough saved to start trying to track a bottle down."

"It'll look good on applications for university, but you'll be getting paid as well." Tom smiled at her and how happy that seemed to make her. "I'm going to be working you hard, Christina. You shouldn't have to do it all for free."

Tom took another bite of his salad. "I think that sounds great." He told her. "I like that you have so much drive and ambition, Christina."

Christina clamped down on the instinct to make a dirty joke about Tom working her hard. That was Evan talking. Not first date with her Headmaster material. "Of course. I refuse to be one of those girls who just goes to college to find a husband who wants to be a lawyer. I'm going to go to business school and take over the vineyard with my brother. Maybe have my own wine merchant business too. I haven't decided yet."

She smiled at Tom. "I like you," she told him. "I like that you don't think I shouldn't have dreams of my own. A lot of the boys I meet are like that. They're just raised thinking they're the centre of the universe."

"Well. I was raised by a one-eyed woman who didn't like me very much." Tom pointed out with a laugh. "In a foster home with thirty-five other kids. I believe everyone has to have dreams."

Tom reached over and touched Christina's hand. "I like you too. More than I probably should. Does that bother you?"

Christina shook her head, brushing her fingers against Tom's again. "If it bothered me, I wouldn't be here and I wouldn't have accepted the job working for you after school," she pointed out. "It would bother me a lot more if you didn't like me."

She looked down at their hands for a moment. Tom was older, but he was nice. And older meant he was mature, which boys her age really weren't. "I know you're... older, and you're the Headmaster, but you're not that old and it's not like you're a teacher."

Tom laughed at that thought. "I'd be a very horrible teacher." He told her, shaking his head. "I'm too lazy to do something like that. I'm smart enough. I'm talented. But, I'd rather other people do all the work for me."

But, he smiled at her. "You're legal, but you're still one of the students. Which makes things complicated."

Christina nodded. "I know," she said. "I knew even coming here tonight could be risky, but I really wanted to. Evan and Narcissa have been teasing me for having a crush on you."

She tucked a bit of her hair behind her ear, rubbing her thumb against Tom's. "Is it too complicated for you to want to see me again?"

"No. It's not complicated." Tom told her, shaking his head. "It's not complicated at all. It may be a bit complicated if you tell Narcissa. You run the risk of her telling her sister about it and Bellatrix would love nothing more than to ruin my life."

He shrugged and glanced around. "As long as you're okay seeing someone like me. I'm fine with it."

"A Headmaster at an all girls academy. An orphan with no sense of a real family." Tom told her, looking her over as he took a drink of his water. "Someone who forgets to eat and sleeps in his office a lot of the time because he just doesn't feel like going home."

He gave her a faint smile. "An old man like me. If you can handle all of that, I think we're going to have fun together."

Christina shook her head, smiling back at Tom. "You're not that old. The rest of it is just... facts about you. I can handle it. I want us to have fun together."

She picked up her wine glass again. "We'll have lots of time to get to know each other in between you working me hard after school."
