Half asleep and wide awake.
It was late. Starbridge sat in one of the rec areas, reading a Shi'ar sacred text and wishing the goddess Sharra would distract him from a certain goddessesque person who as not his and probably not going to be.

David was wrestling with a similar problem. He was convinced that girls would go for Princes. Guys who could be knights in shining armor.

She wouldn't stay with someone who barely lived up to what everyone seemed to think a Logan was. He was so different from his brother, sister, and father. David was rather unique and that was his problem probably.

He blinked and then smiled slowly. "Oh hello Starbridge."

Starbridge manages a smile, too. "Hello, David." Nice, normal David. His only crazy relative was a respected hero who was part of Rachel's extended family. And enhanced senses were cool, not creepy like precognition. And Kythri's bloody claws, did he have to be such a great guy Starbridge couldn't even properly resent him?

"Couldn't sleep yet either, huh?"

His mother didn't raise jerks. Not that David had ever really had any jerk like tendencies. It could easily be seen that David was pretty much the most level headed person someone could ever meet under the age of twenty-five.

"No. I have trouble sleeping at night," he admits. Then gives a slow shrug. "I can hear the trees too much."

"Have you tried a white noise generator or something?" Starbridge tries to be helpful, but clutches his book a little.

Huh he never thought of that.

"Or a box fan. I had my window open because it was too warm. My room has uh.... Good sound proofing," he shook his head. He wasn't good at not admitting he had to have his own room because his senses were so sharp.

"A box fan might work, then."

Pause.

"So, your Valentine's day was good, too, huh?"

He can't help that smirk.

"Yeah. She liked what I did. I cooked breakfast and um." He looks vaguely embarrassed and suddenly a little shy. This is something he's a little insecure over.

"I wrote poetry. I'm not sure it was good."

"As long as it wasn't painfully bad, I'm sure it was appreciated. And had it been painfully bad, I'm sure it would have been all over the school by now, so clearly, you did well. Good for you. We had a pleasant time at supper that day, as well." Starbridge had been far too reticent for poetry, however. David had managed to be more demonstrative.

David peers closely at Starbridge then nods. That was nice of him to say all things considering.

"Thanks." Starbridge is a stand up guy.

"Welcome."

Pause.

"She's incredible, isn't she?" he asks softly.

He nods while looking away.

"She's like a goddess in mortal form," he agrees.

Starbridge sighs with his eyes on his book, even though he's not reading anymore. "Precisely."

After a moment, Starbridge takes a deep breath. "We've been trying to handle this like gentlemen for a long time now, and I appreciate that."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]smallestbear
2011-03-19 09:29 pm UTC (link)
He blinked and looked back at Starbridge. His gaze softened a bit and he felt less on guard. "We had a choice. Act reasonable and continue to try and date her or act foolish and loose that chance. Rachel doesn't seem like the sort of girl to like it if we act like pig-headed apes."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]gildedcage
2011-03-19 09:46 pm UTC (link)
"Of course not. So I think we can come to a gentleman's agreement here. To respect any decision she makes, even if it's...." A dryness comes into Starbridge's voice. He can't help it. He's still a prince, at the core, no matter how polite he tries t obe. "...Torn Ear. And if anyone interferes with her choices, or hurts her in any way, we're both at the forefront of the considerable charge to, as they say, kick his ass."

"Almost like Helen of Troy. Only much more reasonable," that gets a faint crack of amusement from David and he nods.

"I'm in. I think I'd kick anyone's ass who crossed that line anyways. Ma always taught me that the lady always gets the last say and no real gentleman would try and g against her wishes."

"Yes. ABsolutely no ten-year wars or human sacrifice. A guy must have some standards."

"Yes, I suppose it is a statement of the obvious. Formal agreements just come easier to me, I suppose." A sheepish expression. "A guy likes some measure of control in times of frustration, even if it is a controlled acknowledgement of a lack of control."

Okay now David laughs softly.

"Exactly. I don't want bloodshed unless it's needed." He simply nodded finding that Starbridge though along very similar paths as he. "You're right. We need something about this that we can control, the rest is out of our hands."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

2011-03-19 10:42 pm UTC (link)
Starbridge nods. "Really, it's either get formal or start obsessing about whether you're a better kisser than I." Starbridge looks David over. "And I don't think I want the answer to that."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]smallestbear
2011-03-19 10:46 pm UTC (link)
"You usually act formal around me it seems." Or coolly reserved but David never worried about that.

"Wait. You worry about that</i?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]gildedcage
2011-03-19 10:47 pm UTC (link)
"Xavier-Neramani. I don't have a casual -- why wouldn't I worry about that? Kissing's an important part of human romance. What if I'm not doing it right, when she has all these other bases for comparison? It's a valid concern."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]smallestbear
2011-03-19 10:59 pm UTC (link)
"That's the fun part. You learn as you go. And it's not as if she's been run off," David is just fairly certain that his kisses are fine so long as he doesn't get aggressive this early in. "As long as you aren't like, shoving your tongue down her throat early on I think you'll do fine."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]gildedcage
2011-03-19 11:16 pm UTC (link)
"I suppose so. But there's something to be said for not being a ...cold fish. I've never kissed anyone else. Had a date, once, with the Princess Royal of the Badoon, but...we're definitely just friends." Pause. "Definitely. Have you ever seen a Badoon?"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"It won't be cold if you try," David said with some confidence.

That had his attention. "No, what are they like?"

"Well they're refined, intelligent, strong, wonderful girls, but they're... very swamp-based. Their hair and fur are designed to blend in with the swamp weeds, and under that, and across their faces, are these very...damp scales."

[info]smallestbear

"So very well polished when it comes to intellectual pursuits but overall just not very physically alluring?" He cants his head. "I can't imagine them smelling very good either if they're swamp-based for me that's a uh, pretty big factor."

"Yes. And apparently it goes both ways. When we agreed to talk our mothers' advisors out of doing anything stupid, Her Highness confided that I smelled 'underripe.' So. Yes. Not a lot of experience in these things."

"Oh!" His eyes dance with amusement. Now that was pretty funny. "Take it from me. Bathe often. Like once a day. Humans can smell that much. And we often find the smell of sweat distasteful. Because it's seen as a sign of being unclean."

"...David," Starbridge says slowly. "I want you to take a deep breath, and then think about that for a moment."

As a result of his heavily avian heritage, Starbridge has a pronounced deficiency of sweat glands, and smells like it.

He visibly blushes.

"I forgot about that."

[info]smallestbear

"And dating for everyone else is just so easy," he says for once using a faintly sarcastic tone but obviously not meant to be mean.

Starbridge smiles. "Of course."

[info]smallestbear

It seemed that they got along pretty well. David wished that this whole thing was less complicated. Corey had been David's best friend while he was still here and David hasn't yet formed a friendship in which he feels very close to the other party.

Part of it has t do with the fact he feels like an old man in a young man's body.

David wanders to sit down. "So what were you reading before?"

He holds up the book, clearly written in Shi'ar. "It's a religious text. The most informative translation of the title would probably be 'The Sacred Shotgun Wedding.'"

[info]smallestbear

He blinked lightly. That was like reading the Bible before bed then. Which to David is faintly amusing. He isn't sure he believes in the Christian God that he was taught to as a kid.

He wonders what Starbridge's religion is like. "Well. What's your religion like?"

Starbridge points out some of the elaborate illustrations of a beautiful and scary-looking couple clutching each other. "The goddess Sharra and the god K'ythri. They provide an example of Strength Through Unity." He sighs. "A spiritual underpinning for the fact that we're a bunch of fascists."

He looked at the picture. It was strange and lovely at the same time. But he looks sharply at Starbridge again.

"You actually think that." That is a statement. "Do you plan on trying to change things someday?"

[info]gildedcage
2011-03-20 04:44 pm UTC (link)
"It's a hard system to change. Did you know we have no written constitution? Just the sovereign and the Council. Who don't always even talk to each other about what's going on."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]smallestbear
2011-03-20 05:06 pm UTC (link)
"So. It's a case of the left hand not knowing what the right is doing?" That's a good way of putting it. David thinks it doesn't make sense.

"That's a little messed up."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]gildedcage

"Yes. And since they are the only existing restrictions on each other's power, it's extra messed up. When mother tries to change expansionist policy, the council just does things behind her back. So my options in life are staying here in easy exile while they shove one of my unwilling or insane cousins on the throne -- it doesn't matter that the insane ones have been ruled out of the succession; they'd do it to prevent a civil war -- or going back and trying to make a real transition there, and accepting that it's going to be hard and annoying and that nice girls don't want to be Shivarn'n Halanau."

"Dude." David shakes his head. No wonder Starbridge has a huge thing for Rachel. She's a freaking goddess and doesn't care about stuff like that.

"No wonder you're here. At least you can get a break from all of the fake-acting girls your age until you figure out what you really want. Not that I'm encouraging you to make a choice, man. You gotta decide all of that on your own."

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

He finds himself smirking. That's true enough. "Well like you said, at least we're being reasonable. Would hate it if we couldn't be friends because of this."
