Follow the Snarky Fortune Cookie
Valini pushed around her noodles, searching for some more pork or shrimp to catch with her chopsticks. There nothing like a near-death experience to make wanting to get away from work and have a lunch out more often. "Well,  all in all, it sounds like you had a rather exciting time." She smiled sympathetically across the table to Lena, shaking her head. "I thought lab rats were supposed to stay in the labs, make new and interesting ways to melt our coffee cups or blow up tanks and generally stay out of trouble. Minimal exposure to the Day Star, lots of coffee at all times and leave all the trouble to the cowboy-types in SHIELD."

"Usually yes, but my god it was the project of a lifetime. So I guess they had to make it worthwhile with the risk." Lena had a few more noodles, looking...oddly okay with this whole experience. Maybe SHIELD types were crazy. "Is it sad that their coffee was better than SHIELD cafeteria variety? I'm glad I have a stash of real coffee in my office because really that stuff..."

"I love that Imminent Danger is brushed aside in the quest for Science," she teased with a chuckle. Who was she to talk, if she was kidnapped by some of their enemies, she'd probably sit there in a dank cell and psychoanalyze her guards. "Do you remember enough of it to transfer to your work? If we're having a race for arms with them, be nice to get a leg up on them." She frowned to consider the coffee dilemma. "Well, they aren't having to pump it out in the barrels like our cafeteria does. Then again, we make nice nice with Tim's lab to get the good stuff anyway."

"Historical, once in a lifetime chance at getting exclusive new information, recreating and improving an experiment that's never been successfully replicated despite decades of attempts and it happens to be done by the pioneer of your field? Please, a little kidnapping is not going to bring me down in the face of that. Though the cells could use improvement." There was that excited glint in her eye that all the lab people got when they got really excited about work. Others would call it a crazed glint, she scoffed at those. "As for remembering, the base stuff we have, and there are copies of the extra notes so it's just a matter of resetting up here. Tim and I had enough time to get a handle on things while there so we have a headstart compared to the competition."

She had to admit that the experience did have her trying to get out of the lab more, for lunch at least, to prevent the too cooped up feeling from setting in. And maybe see a bit of sunlight for once. Didn't mean the obsessive nature of how she worked had been toned down. "We make very nice! Have to keep in that man's good graces, he has the good stuff. Luckily he's a sweetheart and a teddy bear so it's not too difficult," she joked.

Val just laughed at Lena's reasoning, taking her small cup to drink the accompanying tea. "And that is why SHIELD hires our type, with all the curiosity and intellect yet none of the common sense needed for self-preservation." She saw the happy glint in the scientist's eyes and sighed in amused defeat. Lena would probably let HYDRA shave her head if it meant finally completing some illustrious theorem or formula. "Ah you and Tim conspiring and plotting. Now I feel totally secure, is there anyway of moving my office out of the blast zone, I wonder?"

"Oh yes, keep him stocked in whole beans and pretend to not hear any suspicious booms when the superiors come by to ask. We know how to play nice with his posse." Ah, she found the last of the vegetables and shrimp, pinching them and swimming them in the noodles and garlicky broth. Chewing on the mouthful, she pondered for a moment or two. "You know, I bet work is that much more frantic at the SWORD bases. Arrested aliens busting, or oozing, out of their cells, misplaced impounded space ships, shipments from the Moon or the Shi'ar that need to go through quarantine because some produce could be sentient."

"We have common sense! It's just funnelled in directions...other than self-preservation. Do you psych people have a term for it?" It was always fun to tease, and it was both her default and how she usually dealt with nearly anything, yes, even kidnappings. Well, except official meetings. That just wouldn't do. "You should, and while we can't help your office we will give you a forewarning out of the goodness of our little lab-hearts." Hey, friend bonus. Warnings about blast timings. Granted they weren't always ahead of time enough but...

Lena swiped some of Val's noodles, since she seemed focused on the veggies, and chuckled at the image of the SWORD bases. "Ugh, imagine the cleaning staff and the bill for sanitation alone...Ever hope to get to psychoanalyze one of the alien races just out of interest? Though I totally expect a case summary of some kind coming my way after that."

Val just pursed her lips and gave a lidded look, not buying a word about Lena having common sense. "It's called being delusional, Lena. Which of us mixed the radioisotopes together to get the 'pretty fushia color'?" She toasted the goodness of lab-hearts. A quick text of 'hey you all are going to want to go get some coffee. Off site.' would alleviate stress around the workspace.

She shuddered in sympathy, not minding the noodle theft. Help the poor janitors who cleaned up after the slimy ones. "I wouldn't be entirely heart broken if they had a higher pay than me. Just saying." Chuckling, she smiled at the idea of analyzing an alien species. "Oh, there'd be months of study ahead of time, just learning the biology and cultural references to interpret the responses..." It would be a whole book and a few years of work. She gave Lena a dreamy sigh and chuckled. "Well, I guess biologists aren't the only ones to risk greatly for advancements in science."

"You have to admit that that turned out beautifully!" She jabbed her chopsticks in Val's direction to make the point. "Totally worth the effort, no question." Seriously, how did people not see the beauty of it? It made all the pictures that much more interesting too.

"Oh the biology alone would be so much fun, pretty much learning from scratch in the majority of cases but still..." Cue dreamy sigh of her own. "Oh, you're just as lacking in common sense as the rest of us, just in denial about it," she teased.

"Right before the glass melted, it was a beautiful shade," she agreed in a humoring tone. She rolled her eyes in mock defeat, smacking the offending chopsticks with her own. There's pretty and then there's makes-you-sterile-in-a-minute-pretty.

The two had a few dreamy moments about the prizes and prize money they could get with an analysis like that. "You know SHIELD would never let us publish," she admitted sadly. "It'd be confidential and locked away until we started another pissing contest with some intergalactic army." She scoffed and tipped her chin, refusing to know what Lena could possibly mean.

"You psych people just don't get it," she shook her head with a teasing smile but dropped the topic in favour of a brief chopstick fencing moment.

"They never let us publish anything, I've got enough locked away stuff for more than enough papers. Of course the work it would take to properly write them up..." And the time, she did not have the time. "And just prove my point why don't you," she teased at the scoff and chin lift. "We'll keep it our secret since we'd all like to believe the ones doing the psych evals are, you know, not lacking in common sense?"

If psychs meddled with their experiments like wet-chem types did, they'd be locked up in a nano. She chuckled and snagged Lena's chopsticks, pinning and twisting them still for three seconds and considering the duel done. Rules schmules.

The practically audible pout to 'they never let us publish' make Val cough a little laugh behind her cup. What's the point of playing with top of the line tech and cutting edge science if there's no fame? "I have plenty of common sense, thank you very much. That's why I stay unkidnapped for so long and work in a office. And my evals are for SHIELD sane and well-balanced, mind you."

Chopstick duel cheater! Though really, Lena expected that to happen. No honour among the psych people, tsk tsk.

"Mhmm, it just means you're buddies with the people doing the evals. It's how the best of us get through them," she winked. Because best evals were not done sober. Oh no.

"I'd honestly be worried to have to do the evaluation for the upper-types. Getting into their minds would be a twisted and dark alley I don't want to venture without a canary and lifeline back." She grimaced at the idea, the amount of layers required to unpeel those minds would be diabolical.

However, lunch break was wrapping up soon and that meant back into the fray. "Alright, enough shenanigans. Did you get enough to eat? You know how hungry one gets mid-afternoon."

"We'll give you some string, it beats bread crumbs," she winked. "And don't rise too high in SHIELD then, the higher you go the deeper you'll need to delve into scary minds of higher ups. And they say the criminals are the ones who's minds you should be afraid of..."

"Don't rain on my shenanigans," she mock frowned. "But yes, mother, I did get enough to eat." Lena gave her a genuine smile. "And thanks, I should probably do lunches more often. They're good for sanity."

She scoffed and shrugged a shoulder. "No, no, higher up is not worth it, not even for the nicer office. And I like the level I am at, it's full of quirky-weird and instead of mentally scrambled weird." No, not a corporate ladder climber, this one. And she never mentioned how similar some people's profiles were to the people they chased down. "Though being transferred to MI-6 for a sabbatical would be fun."

"You've achieved your daily shenanigans, best not over-do it," she teased back but smiled. Sometimes a breather was needed in their fields and neither gave up the chance to play hooky. "Never speak poorly of the cafeteria, but somedays you just don't want what they've got."

"I speak poorly of the cafeteria too often, their coffee is something that needs significant improvement. Probably a not-so-subtle way management is trying to wean us off the stuff, sadly it's not going to work." She gathered up her stuff and saluted her friend with the chopsticks before leaving. "Don't get lost in some poor sap's mind before next time. I don't want to have to do a whole selection process to replace you. Tried. Interviews were a hassle and I gave up."

"Or maybe to stop being such snobs about your caffeine in-take," she chirped up in an offer, batting her eyes innocently. She gave a snort and shook her head. "Can you remember in your history, a time in which SHIELD was subtle about anything? They excel in kind of being obvious."

She laughed and crossed her fingers, hoping to never get someone that scrambled and twisted in the head. "Oh here." She offered one of the cookies to Lena and nudged her with it. "Come on, you know you can't finish a Chinese lunch without one."

"Sad for an organization dealing with espionage," she chuckled. "Our caffeine intake may be far past daily recommended doses but it keeps us going."

Lena stopped and walked over to nab a cookie before taking a seat again. "Nearly forgot! You speak the truth about cookies, so what will our fortune be today?" She cracked open her cookie and then looked up at Val with a deadpan look. "...Did you write these?"

"They are ubiquitous and that helps them stay invisible. I mean," she leaned over conspiratorially, adding in a whisper. "Have you seen Josh post-work-out?" She fanned her face and blew out a breath before laughing.

Well, that was an odd reaction. She frowned and leaned over Lena's shoulder to read the fortune for the fortune cookie. "I'm not that good. Or I'd keep a bowl of them on my desk for my patients."

She laughed at that and winked. "Why do you think I made that bet with him to get him in that tiny Halloween costume?" Hey, it was a nice view.

Lena put aside her the You know that's bad for your health fortune, and gave Val one of the other cookies. "Let's see what you got then. And hmm...fortune cookie therapy messages? You may be onto something. At the very least they get a cookie out of it."

"With how some people treat sessions with me? A random message in a stale cookie would serve the same purpose and free up time for other things," she admitted and took the cookie. Cracking it open, she had two and held the two for Lena to see. You should call your mother more often. and You, too.

She looked at Lean for explanation. "Did we prank anyone recently who'd be keen to settle the score? And by we, I clearly mean you, Doctor."

"Please, they're just bitter about psych evals and taking it out on you. Which is silly, especially if they bothered to be nicer they might get a few drinks out of it," she winked. Though it turned to a frown at the fortune. "Oh come on, I call my mother enough! And I don't know why you're giving me that look, like you've never pranked anyone! Besides, I've been very good recently. Being out of country tends to do that. I'm putting this one on you."

As she spoke Lena took another cookie from the pile and cracked it open. Be honest, you have no real 'sleep' cycle.

"I so d-...okay fine. That one's fair."

"We select from a special type of genius that will obey orders and resent suggestions and advice. Though that being-nicer-equals-drinks thing could work in some's favor, if you know what I mean." She felt slightly relieved that Lena was as perplexed as her about these fortune cookies. The denial though, she had to roll her eyes, many things went 'awry' that seemed to be funny occurred in the R&D sections.

"That one is so true." She smirked at Lena and picked up another out of twisted curiosity. Someone probably wants your table, maybe you should move out of the way. "Cheeky."

Lena laughed at both the comment and the cookie. "Someone's out for your position, watch out. I'm helping you keep it only because I like having a monopoly on the nice chair during the occasional lunch. Petty perhaps but..."

"How many of these do we have anyway? Someone clearly made an effort, I should be impressed."

Val looked down at the bill and counted the cookies. "I'd say eight more. I'm thinking leaving a message at work that we'll be late would be the mature thing to do. Also in case this is the most passive rekidnapping scheme ever, somewhere to start looking." She flipped out her phone and started texting the away message while piling the cookies in her purse. "Alright, lets get outside and see what's next."

"We're very mature," she managed to say with a straight face. "Passive rekidnapping is putting it lightly. Very lightly. It's amusing though I will give them that. But I'm with you, let's go use our 'will be late' message to its fullest."

"Well if it's a kidnapping attempt, it's working. I mean, look at what we're about to do." Which was play hooky and follow the crazy cookies' directions. She chuckled and cracked one open, holding it away just in case they had explosions too.

The lunch was filling but leaves you feel too full. Go to the best place for a cup of coffee, settle your stomach. No, not the lab.

"Well clearly this person doesn't understand coffee since the best place is the lab. But this could be a fun adventure," she smirked. "We'll take my car if we need and you be the fortune cookie reader. We'll probably need a tag line if we're going to be an adventurous duo. Half of which lives in a lab but still..."

She nodded, trying to think where the cookie wanted them to go. "Well, it would be counter-productive to appear at the labs after saying we won't be there until later," Val admitted and followed Lena to the car.
