You could always write the author and let him know. Perhaps in expression it might mean something slightly different.

But avis is certainly a bird. A rare bird would be a unique person in phrasing though.

Just a thought.

I think the calendar's right. Not that 'avis' doesn't mean bird in Latin, but the phrase is what it is. Because I doubt whoever edited didn't notice because it's a calendar about words, so they had to know what they were talking about.

Like. 'Cool cat' doesn't mean I'm talking about a shivering kitty.
