Open to all invited!
"I'm glad you could come!"

Meredith waved to one of the many people whom she recognized and took a sip out of the glass she was holding. She looked around, surveying the people who had come--this party had definitely been a good idea, just look at everyone who had shown up! It was almost as good as the parties that those rich Slytherin girls threw, except that none of them were there. Which was alright, she told herself, because they were rude anyway, but how cool would it have been if a party she and Phoebe threw had actually attracted one or two?

There was a big bonfire blazing a few meters away and Meredith went over to place herself down in the sand around it. She leaned back on her hands and stretched her legs out, watching the silhouettes of her feet as she wiggled her toes. It was going to be murder to get all of this sand off of her at the end of the night, but none of that mattered right now. This was awesome and nothing was about to spoil her night.

How was it cold? There was a fire blazing mere meters away, it was July, and they were at the beach! She should not be cold. But, there she was, sitting on a perfectly arranged log with her sweater tight around her shoulders. Phoebe would have to admit to her mother that bringing the extra bit of clothing was a good idea, but she'd definitely put up a fight about it earlier. Admitting that they were right always put you on your parents' good side.

Anyway--she couldn't stop smiling at all the people that had shown up! Apparently, everyone else was super bored this summer and needed a nice relaxing time at the beach. It was really a ton of fun to plan, and Phoebe was sure that this was the kick off the graduates of 1980 needed before the last stretch until their final year.

Wow, the final year. Phoebe had always dreamed about it, but the fact that it was actually here was daunting. Not only did she have her N.E.W.T.s to think about, there was the whole Head Girl thing...and the quidditch thing...and the boyfriend thing...or lack of boyfriend thing.

Eh. Phoebe dug her toes into the sand and stared out into the fire; she'd gone pretty long without having to seriously worry about boys, she'd make it through.

Ashlyn was practically skipping over to where Phoebe was sitting--maybe it was because she'd had an overload of time with Keegan the past week or so and was in an extremely good mood, or maybe she was doing it to prove to the others in her year that she wasn't some callous pregnant-woman hitting bitch, but there she was frolicking on the beach before sitting down next to her closest mate.

"Phoebe Smethwyck, I formally declare this evening to be a complete and smashing success," Ashlyn said happily, figuring it'd do as a good substitute for hello. The decorations and everything looked wonderful (there were some that were clamoring for a limbo contest, even!) and she had to say that this was infinitely better than any party she had previously attended. "Next time my mum needs a benefit thrown, I'm giving her your name," she added with a wink.

Phoebe grinned broadly; oh, good! She wasn't making up the 'people are having a good time' thing her entire body was excited about! She clapped her hands in an exaggerated manner before huddling under her sweater again. Merlin, maybe she needed to join that limbo contest before she froze to death. No one else seemed to be cold. Maybe Phoebe just had some weird allergy to the sea breeze.

"I'd be glad to be of service," she said with a snooty tone, but it was merely a second later that she broke out into laughter. Oh, it was really good to be laughing all the time, a much better change from all the crying and sad timees the last few months of Hogwarts brought on. Phoebe was also glad to see that Ashlyn was pushing through those times, and it looked like the Ravenclaw girls were going to be on the right track come September.

Unless Phoebe managed to snag head girl and Klio through a fit and blew her to smithereens. Which the girl could definitely see happening. But this was no time to think about school!

"Is Keegan here?"

Ashlyn laughed as well, glad to know that things were still on a good page between the two of them. Maybe she had been paranoid but the hiatus she'd taken from everyone save Keegan after the Quidditch match was finally bearing down on her. They had their entire 7th year to turn things around and just have a good year.

"He is," Ashlyn said happily, smoothing her hair down a bit. "But I wanted to come over and say hello!" It'd been a long time (nearly a month) since the two had had a chat and it was overdue, dang it! Besides, he had other friends to talk with himself, a bit of time away from each other wouldn't kill him...or her. "How's your summer been so far?"

Davy was all for a beach party, any party really. Life was pretty damn awesome, and it was a good opportunity to see his friends before they all got pulled into their own lives. He'd brought his camera and was spending a lot of time behind the lens, taking pictures of his happy and laughing friends, saving up the memories but also planning on using them for an art project at some point. The combination of the flames and the feeling of fun and happiness in the air would definitely lend themselves to something in the future, if not soon.

He found himself a drink and grinned, toasting some other friends with a tilt of his glass and finding a nice place to perch. The best pictures would come from candid moments and Davy had picked the best log, looking around at people and generaly just being in a good mood.

There was a skip in Ellie's step as she skirted across the sand that night, passing through the crowd of people that had come out to party, drink in hand. She'd been dancing around just about everywhere it seemed since school had ended, and it was no mystery why. She loved her new job--she couldn't get enough of it--and it was seeping into her outside life as well. Ellie found herself dancing around everywhere lately; a random pirouette on the way to the bathroom in the morning, an out-of-place arabesque while she was cooking dinner, and tonight was no different.

Because the thing was, she'd never imagined she could be this happy with life after Hogwarts. She was a Ravenclaw, and a Ravenclaw from one of the--if she did say so herself--smartest classes of Ravenclaws that the school had seen in a long time. People expected her to go on and do amazing and life-altering things with that knowledge, and Ellie had let those expectations for a long time lead her to think she couldn't do something as simple as teach a bunch of primary schoolers how to dance en pointe. But when she had realized that she could actually do anything with her life, and furthermore something that actually made her happy--well, that had been the most freeing realization she had ever come to.

Of course, the happiness could also be attributed to the fact that she and Davy were back on good terms after the whole craziness at the end of the year. Which she was super thankful for, seeing as living with him would be ten times harder if they were glaring across the room at each other all the time.

Speaking of Davy, a smile broke out onto Ellie's face as she spotted him just a couple meters away. Making her way over, she slid down onto the log next to him and gave him a quick kiss. "Having a good time?"

Derek was annoyed.

Derek was annoyed, and irritated.

All he could think was this is ridiculous, this is stupid, this is BALLS, as he trudged down one of the dunes to where there were lights and the majority of the noise was coming from.

It was a lovely night, but it would have been much better spent not being on duty and not being reduced to coming down to some beach where there were a bunch of Wizarding teenagers being a bunch of... of... hooligans.

"Oh, balls." He took a deep breath and jogged towards the crowd with the intention of finding the ringleader.

Had Derek not been running, Meredith was quite certain she would never have seen him amidst all the other people that were hanging out on the beach. But there he was, right in her peripheral vision and wearing those terrible robes and oh for crying out loud---

To be quite honest, Meredith didn't even think for a second that he could be there because they were in trouble. All she was thinking about was that that annoying man had for some reason shown up and just crashed her fabulous party. Like some stalker or something. Where in the world did he even hear about the thing, anyway? She knew she hadn't sent an invitation to him.

Standing up and already peeved off by just the sight of him, Meredith crossed her arms over her chest and padded up to meet him. "Really? Really? Do you honestly have nothing better to do?"

Derek skid to a halt and froze. He knew that voice. He knew that voice a lot better than he should have.

Turning around, he looked at her with wide eyes and almost broke out into an ear-splitting grin, and almost let out a loud cry of "My Meredith!" before her words registered.

"Do I honestly have nothing better to do than what, exactly?"

Oh, for crying out loud, did she think he was here to-- did she think that he-- oh for cry--

"Hang on just a second, exactly why do you think I'm here, my Meredith?" Derek demanded, scowling.

Meredith cringed at the name, as if she knew she should have been expecting it , had let down her guard for a second, and now was dealing with a brought on sensation twice as unpleasant as it should have been. Or maybe she was just cringing at the color of his robes--she still couldn't get over that the Ministry dressed their people in that.

"Why do I think you're here?" she scoffed. "The reason why you seem to pop out everywhere I am--to ruin my life!"

Okay, so that had been a little over-dramatic, but she really didn't care. He had no right to come running in here like this. "---and stop calling me that!" she added on belatedly.

This would have been amusing, if it hadn't been such an annoyance to come down here in the first place.

Derek observed her coldly whilst rolling up the sleeves of his robe. "Firstly, I am here on a complaint presented to the Ministry about a bunch of delinquent teens disturbing the peace and suspected underage drinking and secondly, I do not think I shall stop calling you that name because you seem to detest it so very much and it's rather enjoyable."

Well, perhaps it was a bit much to pull out the full Hit Wizard persona, but honestly! She was making him out to be some sort of, some sort of stalker. Of course, he had capitalized on teasing her half to death the last time they met, but he wasn't crazy!

Not usually, at any rate.

Meredith blinked a couple times, the anger melted off her face to be replaced by surprise--and maybe a little fear, too? She was obviously taken aback by the idea that he could be there on his job---and that they were disturbing anyone in the first place, honestly it wasn't that loud---and that stopped her for a moment. But only for a moment. Because this was Derek Dobbs she was talking to, and he was a jerk and they couldn't have been disturbing anyone so it wasn't difficult to imagine that he would have just come down there to pull her hair some more, right?

Right. That was it, that had to be it.

Scoffing once more, Meredith regathered her previous annoyance and huffed at him. "Yeah, right," she said. And that was all she said, because that was all the arse deserved. The punctuation at the end was a swift turn on her heel as she walked away from him.

For crying out fucking loud, that man!

No, seriously, what the hell had he done to this girl to make her so crazy around him! He almost said something, but at the risk of having a drink thrown in his face and then arresting her and dragging her to the Ministry on charges of assault, he resisted.

Not that the idea didn't tempt Derek, because it would serve her right being dragged down to the Ministry in cuffs.

Instead, he leaned forward and grabbed her arm. "Not so fast, my Meredith. Unfortunately, I am not joking about being here strictly for business," he thump gestured to the robe and the badge that had his name and serial number on it, "and I do believe you've just cheeked a Wizard of the law."

He raised an eyebrow expectantly.

She raised an eyebrow back in mocking defiance.

"Oooh, a wizard of the law," she repeated. "I'm so sorry, Mister Hitwizard, to have cheeked such a fine and upstanding law enforcer as yourself." She didn't bother to glance at his robes or badge, because she bloody well had seen them already; but that didn't mean she didn't still think he was bluffing.

She tugged her arm away from him a bit more roughly than was completely necessary. "You actually think I'm supposed to believe you after the way you've acted towards me? Give me one good bloody reason why I should think you're actually here on business."

Derek growled and rubbed his temples before squinting at her with one eye.

"You know, I don't understand why you find it so difficult I am here do something besides harass you, because I really haven't--"

He stopped, a look of disbelieving comprehension dawned on his face and he squinted at her. "Unless you want me to be here and you're embarrassed to admit it, so you blame me for being some kind of rabid stalker completely intent on ruining your," he looked around and found a lacking word, "shindig."

Well, that's how it was starting to seem to him, anyway.

"And as sweet as I find that and all, I really am honestly here to tell you to knock off the noise and hand me the alcohol, I mean really," his voice dropped and he looked around, "on the off-chance Muggles should find you and somebody gets a little to drunkenly happy and starts firing off spells? It's not a private beach on just our land, or something, you know. And you're lucky you're on this portion of the beach, or trespassing would've been added to the charges as well."

Meredith's face turned redder with each new word that came out of his mouth, and none of it was embarrassment over his assumptions about her. Okay, most of it wasn't. But either way, it was more or less wholly anger over the fact that he was trying to turn this around on her, and annoyance at the feeling she was getting that he might actually have been telling the truth. She was, however, a prideful teenager--and a slightly tipsy one at that--and those two things thrown together did not generally make for the best judgment.

It didn't help that she totally couldn't stand this guy and was not about to tell him, all upset-like, 'oh sorry, sir, right away, sir!' Oh no, he was not about to get that sort of satisfaction.

"You want the alcohol?" she asked him, her hand gripping her cup tightly. What she was about to do was potentially really stupid, but Merlin would it make her feel better right about now. So Meredith stopped thinking about it, and just did it. "Have it." With that, she threw the contents of the glass at him and turned around to storm off once more.

He could fucking arrest her, but he deserved that.

It took him a second to comprehend what happened.

For all the Hit Wizard training and the honed reflexes and split-second reaction timing he had mastered, he could honestly say, without a doubt, it was the first time a girl had ever thrown a drink in his face.

And he had to say it was not the most refreshing feeling in the world, because alcohol stings.

"Oh, no you don't, Miss!" Derek, face, neck, and upper chest rather moist, lunged after her, still a little bit unaware of exactly what was happening.

When did doing this job get so bloody ridiculous?

Meredith had no time to think before she hit the sand. She hadn't been expecting it, and had only gotten a few steps before she felt a body throw itself against her---and suddenly there was sand in her hair.

In her hair.

This bastard was going to pay.

"GET OFF OF ME!" she screamed, writhing and rolling around and trying to do anything necessary to get away from him. "YOU CRAZY ASSHOLE, GET OFF!"

So she was a lot easier to stop than he thought she would be.

Derek thought she'd at least put up a little bit of resistance, but she was tiny and he was a bit mammoth. He also probably didn't need to lunge at her as hard as he did.

Well, it wasn't that hard.

And then there was rolling and sand (sand in so many places-- bad places!) and a lot of screaming in his ear which was when he made a concentrated to stop and looked down at her partly confused and mostly annoyed.

"I'M NOT TRYING TO BE ON YOU," he yelled frustratedly. "I WAS JUST TRYING TO DO MY JOB!"

"YOU'RE DOING A SHITTY JOB OF IT!" Meredith retorted loudly, not really thinking to lower her voice because of their close proximity. She was really fucking mad now, and even if she hadn't been---well, even if she hadn't been, she probably could have cared less if she had made him deaf or not.

She grabbed at his arms and made and effort to loosen and pull them away from her, but Derek was strong. Hitwizard training, she guessed, and if she hadn't hated the prat so much, she might have been enjoying this a lot more, the whole being in the arms of a really gorgeous, really---

---Oh for fuck's sake, what was she thinking!

"I HATE YOU SO MUCH!"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]bigd
2008-07-21 02:41 am UTC (link)
"WELL, I HATE YOU MORE," he shouted back, somewhat desperately.

This was ridiculous, he was in a shouting match with a girl whom he was currently pinning and straddling in the sand, on a beach, whom he was, technically supposed to be arresting rather than wrestling.

Not to mention he was really in very close proximity to her, probably more than was proper, and they were still shouting at each other.

In an effort to calm himself, Derek steeled his voice. "I am not doing a shitty job of it, I'm actually doing very well and in addition to cheeking me, I believe there is a potential charge of assault somewhere in there."

He pressed firmly on her arms. "And I will need to confiscate all the alcohol you haven't already thrown at me."

[info]mymeredith

Well, I hate you more? What was he, five years old? Even Meredith was too mature to yell back something like---well, no, given her current situation, she probably wasn't too mature for much. But it still sounded stupid coming out of his mouth!

Despite the fact that she knew she couldn't win, Meredith was not about to stop fighting against him. If she could just---reach, she would have---kicked him in the----auuuugh! There was no way that he hated her more than she hated him! No bloody way, not with the red that she was seeing right now.

"You're a fucking prat, you know that!?" she yelled, although her voice was lower now. People were really starting to stare at the two of them, and she was beginning to get worried about what everyone would make of this particular spectacle. "You're going to charge me!? You're the one who threw me down into the fucking sand and are currently sitting on me in a rather inappropriate manner! I should take YOU up on charges of sexual assault!"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

Derek scoffed. "Inappropriate manner? You practically gave chase after assaulting me!"

But he did take in their current position and the stares the two of them were attracting and move, kneeling beside her.

"And I am not a fucking prat, you're the delinquent one throwing a party that caused complaints about keeping the peace and underage drinking! You're lucky I'm deciding to go easy on you lot because do you know how irritating it is to have to come all the way down here, me, a seasoned Hit Wizard, and tell the lot of you off? I mean, if you're going to break the rules, at least do it quietly!" He looked around and added quickly, "And sans the alcohol!"

Merlin, but she was a fiery little thing. He wouldn't mind tossing a few drinks at her if he wasn't sure she would literally take him to the ground.

Not that having Meredith throw herself at him would be entirely unwanted.

Oops.

Meredith then did the only thing she had left to do to possibly get free and dug her nails into his wrists as hard as she could. It was a fucking shame, she had just gotten a french manicure and now she was wasting it on him, but at least she could cause him a little pain while she was at it.

Derek yelped slightly when her nails dug into him. "You little minx!" he called, rubbing his wrist. "I was in the process of moving!"

Making it a point of moving deliberately, he made a face at her. "I don't actually want to stop the party, but, as I have repeated myself constantly for the past five minutes, you have to keep it down if you want to remain out here and sorry, my Meredith, but you've got to give up the alcohol. Public property and under-aged drinking and all."

Meredith felt a hint of satisfaction when he got up, even if it might not have been just because she'd resorted to violence to get there. Of course, there was that thought in the back of her mind that asked when she was ever going to have such a gorgeous man sitting on top of her---which was quickly wiped away because that was ridiculous, oh she hated him so much.

She stood up and brushed her hand against her hair, shaking an obnoxious deal of sand out. He should really pay for that, the jerk. "I already gave you the alcohol," she told him with a defiant glare. "And if you want the music to come down so badly, you can go to the wireless and turn it down yourself."

Balls. That's what this was, this was completely ridiculous, for crying out loud, she was about three years younger than him! And he was having a shouting match with her.

"And don't even think about tossing another drink in my face," he growled, ushering her in the direction of the Wireless. "Now go! March!"

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

[info]mymeredith

Well, now she really wasn't going to back down. Meredith crossed her arms over her chest and continued to give Derek a defiant glare.

"Actually, I don't believe I have to do a single thing," she challenged once again. She had never thought she'd be smarting off to a hitwizard in her wildest dreams, and here she was flat-out refusing to follow the directions of one who had just tackled her into the sand. Then again, before meeting Derek, she had also thought that all hitwizards were respectable human beings.

Meredith pointed a stiff finger at him, poking him in the chest. "Let me tell you something, Dobbs," she said. "First off, there are no underage witches or wizards at this party in the first place, because I didn't invite any. It's right on the invitation, if you don't believe me. Secondly, if you're ordering me to turn down the music, which is obviously not going to happen, then you really must not want it that much. So once again, do it yourself."

He grabbed the finger she was using to jab into his chest. Ignoring the few struggling movements the hand made, Derek looked straight down at her.

"Meredith," he said, calmly, soothingly, even, in the manner that Hit Wizards were trained to use when one of their captives was crazy enough that they could be brought down with a little calm, slow talking, "now, be reasonable. I need you to check for me if anybody has crashed this party and is underaged, and I need you to quiet down the party because if people actually realize that I'm a Ministry figure, there could potentially be a panic with the people here, which would be exactly what we're trying to avoid. Can you do this for me?"

She had to admit, Meredith was taken aback by his sudden change of tone and mood. Was he... trying to trick her or something? She wouldn't put it past him, but either way, whatever he was doing was enough to stop her for a moment; long enough to listen to what he was saying. Which... made sense, strangely enough, and she found herself nodding before she knew what she was doing.

"Uh... right," she muttered quietly. "Look, but I---I really don't think anyone has crashed." Besides you. "I know everyone here."

In the back of her mind she knew that if she went to follow his instructions and turned the music down now, though, that he would win. And that she didn't want that. But now he was asking nicely, and that tone of voice was---"Hey, wait! What the hell are you trying to pull on me?" Meredith shook her head, her tone once again suspicious. No, something was weird here. "I know you're not this nice, so drop it."

He looked genuinely taken aback. "Not nice!"

Not nice.

She said he wasn't nice.

That was ridiculous.

That was bollocks, actually, because he was super nice.

He was so nice.

Who was she to call him not nice, look who was talking! She was the she-devil.

She was the one who tried to puncture his wrist with her sharply-shaped nails.

All he did was tackle her.

"I am nice!" Derek insisted, looking slightly disbelieving. No, seriously, he was perfectly nice!

"And I just asked in my very nicest voice if you could turn down the Wireless so I don't make my presence known and, because I am so nice, I am taking you for your word that there is no irresponsible behavior happening."

Of all the nerve.

She scoffed at him and turned her head back towards the party. Really, she didn't want to deal with him anymore--so bloody frustrating, he was--and so she conceded. The words were out of her mouth before she even realized what she was saying, and Meredith quickly shut her mouth afterwards. She didn't even know where that had come from---well, she did because it was logical, but now it had come out sounding like----oh bollocks. She was proving him right even though he wasn't and she was really never going to hear the end of things from him.

She was such a bloody moron. "---but it doesn't matter. I'll be on my way now."

"Oi, my Meredith," he called to her also-retreating figure.

Despite the fact that she could have thrown something at him for calling her that (but not alcohol, the jerk had all her alcohol on him already), Meredith turned around with a rather indifferent set of features.

"What is it?" she asked, tiredly. If he was about to cite something else she'd apparently violated, she was going to pull her hair out.

He couldn't help grinning like an idiot when he saw just how exasperated she really was. There was something to be said for being able to annoy a person so much as he apparently was able to annoy her.

"It was brilliant seeing you."

And Derek turned back and started up the dune, whistling.
