Does anyone here have advice on staying friends with someone after a breakup?

What's the context?

Short version - When I was summoned to my birthplace, and given a choice, I chose to help defend them rather than be returned to my adoptive family and girlfriend.

It's not a decision I'm proud of, but I'm not going to let myself be ashamed of it.

Well then. Simply be honest.

I had to make a very similar decision in my life and I do not regret it. Not one single bit.

If the other person just so happens to be the first to move on- try not to throw a temper tantrum about it. At least, not in their presence. Try and at least act that you're happy that they're happy, even though you may not be.

Go ahead and give each other space for a bit. Try to run in different circles for a bit.

Either that, or just have occasional really awesome sex with no strings attached.

Well, if you broke up, it jus' wasn' meant to be. But dat don' mean you can' be friends! Jus' don' get upset if dey find someone new first...an' if dey get mad at you, den you shouldn' be friends. Dat will jus' cause problems an' much un-needed anger an' awkwardness. But if you can respect an' care for one anoder... den ah see a good friendship.

And in any case... mah break-up advice would be de followin' : Dere are many other fish in de sea, an' it time you put on a divin' suit an' went explorin' for de one dat be right for you!
