It had been a really long day. Marigold had spent most of her morning in all of her classes, paying particular close attention to ever detail her professors mentioned, writing it all down word for word, in short hand. Her notes had to be precise or she'd forget everything and fail and she couldn't fail. One day, she'd be the Minister of Magic and that was honestly all that mattered to her.

She tucked a bit of hair behind her ear as she finished her evening in the library, her brows furrowed in intense concentration, not noticing that anyone was around her.

Charlotte felt like it was her duty to keep Marigold from slipping too far into the recesses of the library. If she wasn't careful, Marigold would end up permanently attached to one of the chairs one day. She dragged Xavier with her towards their friend, then sat across from her, waiting for a moment, then sighing when Marigold didn't seem to notice them. "If you're not careful, you're going to end up haunting this place when you die."

Xavier generally didn't think studying was a bad thing, but Marigold had her father's brains and her mother's intensity and sometimes that meant she stayed in the library for a really long time. "Or your brain might just explode," he agreed, pulling out a chair for himself and taking a seat. "You almost done? We can have a midnight feast and gossip or something."

Marigold finally looked up from the book when she heard the familiar voices, looking over her cousin and friend. She highlighted a sentence in her book by tapping her wand to it, then marked her place and closed it.

"I don't think I'd mind haunting the library. I could read all the books I wanted to." Marigold pointed out and then glanced at Xavier. "And my brain will not explode. That's impossible." She touched her stomach. "I am kind of hungry. I forgot to eat lunch and dinner today. We have that test in potions."

"I'm sure there are both spells and potions to make it possible," Xavier said, waving a hand dismissively. "You know, it's possible to study hard and do well in your classes without starving yourself to death."

"Yeah, but she stays so thin this way." Charlotte grinned at Xavier, then reached out and took Marigold's book. "Let's go to the kitchens and get some food. If you starve to death you'll definitely fail the potions test."

	"If I starve to death, my grades won't matter." Marigold pointed out as she began to pack her books into her bath. She tucked the quill behind her ear and pushed herself up from the table. "I'm sure Charlotte can tell you lots of boring details about her romance with Evan Rosier," Xavier said, before Charlotte could launch into another discusion of how perfect Evan Rosier was. He was really, really tired of those. "But I was thinking I'd lead with me fucking Professor Longbottom's son."

"What?" Charlotte forgot about being annoyed by Xavier when he let that slip. "You and Caspar Longbottom? But he just broke up with Scorpius. How fast do you work?"

	Marigold arched a brow at the both of them, then looked down at her watch. "How long was I in the library? I feel like I've missed so much of both of your lives." She laughed and shook her head. "What do you mean, do I even fancy him? Of course I fancy him," Xavier said, frowning at Marigold a little. "I'm not a complete Slytherin, you know." He shrugged, leaning back in his chair. "We were kind of... I don't know. We snogged and had sex before he and Scorpius broke up, and now he keeps coming to see me. I think we're going to date soon. I'd like it if we were dating. It wasn't easy. It just... happened."

"Caspar cheated on Scorpius with you?" Charlotte said, staring at Xavier. "But he fancied him forever. Not that Scorpius is all that great, really. When we were little all he ever wanted to do was hang otu with Victoire or follow Dad around."

	Marigold shook her head. "I can't imagine a Malfoy actually being good dating material. They're all very self-absorbed. I know Scorpius likes to look at himself in the mirror all the time." Xavier snorted. "You know he hangs out with us, right?" he asked Marigold. "Do you remember my name? Xavier? Xavier Macnair?" He shrugged. "Yeah, it's Albus Potter. They went around holding hands all the time, but Albus is dating Caspar's friend Kit now. Caspar and Scorpius broke up because Scorpius was half-asleep and called Caspar 'Alby' while he was feeling him up."

Charlotte rolled her eyes. "You boys are so terrible at relationships. Evan and I are going perfectly smoothly. I'm going to stay with him at Easter and maybe so is everyone else in my family. I don't know why Albus is dating Kit Smith. He always followed Scorpius around like a puppy, pining because for some reason he thought Victoire actually had a chance with him."

"Albus and I have never really talked that much. I always forget his first name, even though he shares a name with one of the greatest Headmasters of all time. I suppose I feel like no one else should have that name." Marigold admitted as she looked back at Xavier, rolling her eyes.

"People don't know how to have relationships these days, it seems." Marigold told them both quietly. "It's why I'm not going to bother."

Xavier was pretty sure he was wearing Caspar down on the relationship thing. He frowned at Marigold. "That's stupid," he told her. "What do you mean, you're not going to bother? You're going to be a nun?"

"It's not like she has time for a boyfriend," Charlotte said, frowning at Xavier a little. "Marigold works really hard, you know. She's going to be the Minister one day." She looked at her friend. "But you shouldn't cut yourself off from possibilities. Maybe Evan knows someone."

"You two don't understand. My mum and dad fell in love and while I'm very thankful of that and I see how much they love each other, I don't want to end up throwing my life away for some boy. Or girl." Marigold explained and then shook her head. "And besides. Why would you want to date Caspar? He's already cheating on one boyfriend for you. What makes you think he won't cheat on you for someone else?"

She shrugged. "That's why I feel like they're not worth it."

Xavier frowned. "I'm the one he cheated with," he pointed out. "I'm pretty sure he did it for the sex, and I'm giving him sex. I'm not a prudish virgin like Scorpius."

"Yes, but you're not model-gorgeous and the heir-apparent to billions of galleons either," Charlotte pointed out, shaking her head. "I'd be worried if I was you. But Marigold, not all boys cheat. Not all romance has to be about giving things up for love. You could just date and have fun."

"I don't see how being in a relationship can be fun." Marigold frowned at the both of them. "Why can't I just use the time I have in Hogwarts to study and get really well at what I want to do? And then I can grow up and get a job in the ministry. I think I can start dating around thirty-five. Perhaps forty. Once I've got my foot in the door and my career on it's way."

"Forty?" Charlotte repeated incredulously. "All the good ones will be gone by then, Marigold. You'll be stuck looking for widowers and divorced men. You won't be able to get a new husband. And -- I mean -- you're really okay with waiting that long to snog and have sex and all that stuff?"

Xavier thought Marigold was pushing it a little. "You're not serious, are you?" he asked. "Everyone else in politics seems to function fine while having relationships. Surely you're as capable as them."

Marigold frowned at the both of them for a moment. They seemed to be trying to push her into something she didn't like, which she was used to, but she had a Macnair temper inside of her. And she was starting to get annoyed.

"Why?" Marigold asked. "What's your excuse for wanting me to get into a relationship with someone? Or to fuck around with everyone like Xavier does? Or to get in with someone rich like you, Charlotte? Should I just go out and be a whore and fuck everything and not have enough time for my studies?"

Charlotte frowned at Marigold. "I'm not with Evan because he's rich," she snapped. "I didn't even know he was rich until after we started dating. It's not like he advertises his wealth."

Xavier didn't think he slept with everyone, but he was a Macnair and he recognized the temper when he saw it. "Oi, calm down. Both of you," he said. "If you don't want to date, you don't want to date. That's fine. Whatever."

	"Apparently I do. Apparently I have to sleep with everyone to get you to appreciate me." Marigold frowned and looked around the hall. She paused when she saw a tall, thin boy with brown hair. Charlotte squeaked in protest when Marigold grabbed some random boy and attacked him with her mouth. She grabbed Xavier's arm. "Marigold!"

Howell Boot was not expecting to be attacked by some girl's mouth while walking through the library, looking for a book to help with his charm's essay, but he wasn't sure he was going to complain. When the kiss broke, he blinked down at the girl. "Do I know you?"

	Marigold, now that her temper was cooling down, felt very embarrassed. She looked up at the boy who was actually taller. It was odd to see someone taller than her who wasn't a Macnair. "Marigold.
