It's a Mom thing to do
She did care about taking care of people. She did want to one day meet the right guy. Introduce him to her parents of course and maybe if he was the one> Settle down and have some kids with him.

Of course he had to be someone who didn't care about her folks being deaf or the fact she is a mutant. Maybe she won't ever settle down. Maybe she will just continue helping people.

Now she thought about her young friend. The one she kept mothering because he needed it. Just where was he? It was nearly three in the morning. While she had reasons to be up and about he should be in bed sleeping.

Marcia frowns sharply and taps her foot trying not to worry too heavily.

There's a dull 'whap' as Jack swings against the side of the building. He'd gotten the hang of landing palms and toes first, so at least he wouldn't have a bad landing to add to the soreness of the punches and hits he'd taken this evening. Not to mention that unfortunate glancing blow from the tractor trailer. Nothing broken, but he was looking forward to a good soak, then at least a few hours of sleep before Marcia got him up.

Man, he'd really lucked out. She was as great as Maggie. They still hadn't come up with a long-term solution for him not knowing where he was from or how he got his powers, but she'd been nice enough to let him stay with her, and he'd been keeping the place spotless in exchange.

He still had that itch that nothing but crime-fighting could scratch however. Still, he had it under control. Marcia hadn't caught him sneaking out even once so far. Yeah, he must be kinda awesome.

Now if only people would stop calling him 'Spider-Man' or 'Spider-Boy', he muses to himself as he tries to open the living room window as quietly as possible.

Then why is she standing there glaring at him? She mutters something under her breath in anger when she sees him.

"Jack!" Her voice is sharp and upset. Sparks dance on one hand but they won't go far. She isn't happy he is sneaking out.

"Come in." Her voice calms down. "We need to talk Jack."

You have no idea how worried I am kid. You can't just go out like this. Not on your own!

Eeep.

"Hey... Marcia." He grimaces, eyes on his mask drooping. "Sure..."

He clambers in the window and sits down on the couch, costume fading into a tank top and pajama pants, (he'd gotten the hang of making his own clothes), a few bruises showing up on his arms and legs, with one especially large one from shoulder to elbow on his right arm.

She takes one look t him and looks like she might face palm. But she does go get him ice and a towel to wrap it in. There is no reason for him to be in pain while she reads him the riot act for sneaking out like this.

"Here. No need to make the swelling too terrible."

She waits for him to apply it before she tears into him.

"Just what were young thinking Jack! Tell me. Just what were you thinking."

He blushes, mortified at her having to fuss over him. "I'll be fine..." He mumbles. "Just need to eat something and get some rest.."

Yes Marcia, that's why your produce and cold cuts have been depleting so quickly.

He winces, all but covering his head as she starts up properly.

"I... I was thinking I... I was helping people?" He squeaks out. "It's just this... this nagging at the back of my head that keeps going off if I don't get out. I find people in trouble and I help them." He starts counting stuff off on his fingers. "Car accidents, fires, muggings, stores being robbed, gang fights.. there's so much going on, and I can help, so why shouldn't I?"

Oh she should have guessed he has a crazy hero complex ontop of having super powers! Why can't taking care of someone be easy? Well it isn't as if he's a puppy or something. He is a human being and they are complicated as hell. She should be used to this.

"Jack. I am not telling you to ignore the hurts and pains around you. But I feel responsible for your well being. You are still so new to this. Do you know how many times I have had to give myself stitches? It is not fun Jack. It hurts. And I do not want you doing this on your own entirely. You are.... new to this still."

She had never looked for a partner. But he needs someone to keep an eye on him. "You're grounded. Until the bruises get better. Then from now on I'm going with you on patrol."

He better agree.

"I... uh... if I'm too much trouble, I can just leave... You've done so much already.."

He's stunned. He'd expected her to throw him out, or try to keep him locked in, but for her to offer to go with him?

"You... you're really going to help me?" He furrows his brow. "How did you need stitches? Were you a crime-fighter too?"

He looks over his bruises. "Except for the big one... these should all be gone by morning. That one might take an extra day." He bites his lip as he lays out all the details. He doesn't want to deceive her. "Am I grounded for longer than that?"

"Two days," she decides out loud.

Then she quirks her head then laughs softly. "Si. I am. I haven't gone out lately because I was busy with my case load. But I think it is time I go out again. You need someone to watch your back. That is why I am upset. You need someone to teach you how things work. You need someone willing to look out for you and I guess that is me. I am happy to do it. But when we are out there you will listen to me. I know what I am doing and I want to make sure you learn how to do things best."

Jack nods meekly. He really is quite embarrassed over having been caught like this, and knowing that she's right about it all only makes it worse.

"But... but what if you get hurt because you're with me?"

She gives him a look.

"Jack." How can she sooth his fears? "I could get hurt anyways. I play hard when I am fighting crime. You could get hurt too. We just need to take care."

Seemingly satisfied with that for now, he nods. There's a short silent pause, interrupted by his stomach.

"Is it alright if I make a sandwich before I clean up and go to bed?" He's still rather bashful about this whole thing. "Eating a lot seems to help me heal.."

No wonder her food disappears so quickly! Ah well. She has a good job. She can afford to feed a hungry teenager.

Just not two. He better not have a brother.

"Go on. Make sure you rest well. It's late."

John nods and gets up from the couch. He hesitates, then gives her a quick, uncertain hug. "Thank you... I'm sorry for the trouble I give you.."

He shuffles towards the kitchen.

She hugs him back.

"Jack," she calls to him while he is in the kitchen. "It's okay. You're..... You're family now. I don't care. I'm going to be here for you no matter what. This place can be home if you want it too."

Jack smiles to himself, but can't really find appropriate words to reply with.

"Should I make you a sandwich too?" Is all he manages to articulate, fidgeting bashfully.

"Naw. I'm fine. I don't get as hungry like you do. I eat just...Small portions but over a longer period," she explains.

Then yawns. "I have work in a couple of hours. I need to ht the sack. See you latter on kid."
